Lena went to a lot of trouble to gather DNA from every possible sire of her baby, and it all turned out to be for nothing. She processed each sample in her collection and compared them to the test results from both her blood and amniocentesis. The match came back conclusive: Kara Danvers was responsible for getting her in the family way, and Lena didn’t know whether to feel relief or anxiety over it.
For days after making her discovery, Lena drifted around her home in her fuzzy slippers and attempted to work out how she could inform Kara that she would also be a parent in the coming months.
She came up with several plans that unhatched like the little fluffy chicks in her barn — a bit messily and with wobbly legs to stand on.
Her first attempt involved a bunch of confetti poppers she had lying-around, but her nieces set them off during a family night. The spray of little paper stars landed on the dining room table and in their hair, and Lena allowed Kara to rut her at the end of the night in the remaining confetti without confessing her secret.
Lena’s second try was much worse than the first. She ordered a special cake from the local bakery and built up her courage throughout a long afternoon. In her jitteriness, she failed to open the box before the moment she presented the cake to Kara.
The icing should have contained the message You’re the sire, but the badly squiggled lines made it look like You’re the shit. Kara assumed the baked treat was nothing more than a thank you and laughed at the wording before eating the slice with “sire” on it.
The next time Lena thought to reveal her secret, she happened to be at Kara’s place. She came across the Mandalorian costume that Kara had been wearing on the fateful night that resulted in her pregnancy. The large face-shield sat tucked away beside the more adorable element of the costume: Baby Grogru with his big wide eyes and long green ears.
“Kara,” Lena uttered with the epiphany that she didn’t need some kind of fancier announcement. “What if I could give you a real Baby Grogru?”
Kara’s eyes lit up at the suggestion and she came over with a soft and excited expression on her face. “That would be amazing, Lena.”
Lena was convinced they were on the same wavelength until Kara carried on. “You can actually do that? I know you have a background in tech and engineering. Would this Baby Grogru have all of the gadgets to walk and talk?”
Kara’s slow uptake made Lena panic and back down, and she cringed whenever the topic of Kara’s new Baby Grogru came up in the presence of Sam and Alex.
In the interim, her stomach continued to expand by just a few inches and she wore baggier clothes to hide it. She went about daily life with the knowledge that she was falling in love with Kara and the fear that she would be devastated if they didn’t raise their baby together. But it was a lot of pressure to put on someone who just believed she was Lena’s neighbor and bang buddy.
To add to her inner turmoil, Alex became even more judgmental of her relationship with Kara. Since they had known each other for such a long time, Lena imagined Alex’s reaction to their happy news would be full of criticism. She dreaded damaging her connection to the only people who were like her family and losing Kara because of the complications.
As if that wasn’t enough to put her on edge, Sam began acting an extra level of awkward around her. She cooked Lena weird dishes for pregnant omegas and started being overly protective.
Lena could feel herself cracking one night when they were all gathered around for a family evening. Ruby and Emily played with dolls on the floor while Sam prodded Lena into trying some bizarre lentil lasagna with an added vitamin-powder on top.
“This is for Lena. Just for Lena.” Sam pointed her serving spoon at Kara’s outstretched hand and glared at Alex, lest either of them take some of the special food. “She needs to eat more. This has a lot of nutrients for growing healthy—"
“Hair,” Lena cut in and stabbed Sam with her fork under the cover of the table. “I know.”
Kara peered at her more closely after that and even leaned in to inhale the fragrance of her shampoo while Alex squinted at Sam’s odd behavior.
“I don’t think you need to do anything differently,” Kara remarked after a while. “Your hair is always so shiny and soft.”
The sentiment would have been sweeter if it hadn’t brought immediate scrutiny from Alex, who huffed at them both from across the table.
Any vague mention of their sexual encounters was always met with some sort of pushback.
“What? I can’t give Lena any compliments now?” Kara challenged with raised brows and a lazy smirk that said she was amused by how bothered Alex was with their familiarity.
“I think it’s obvious you give each other more than that,” Alex muttered with a passive aggressive jut of her chin. “When are you two going to get serious and finally make it official? We’ve been waiting for weeks and the girls are starting to
suspect something.”
“I don’t know. I’ll have to check my schedule.” Kara quipped and slung her arm over the back of her chair to glance at Lena expectantly. “What are you doing on the eighteenth?”
“You.” Lena deadpanned and swiped a crispy potato off of Kara’s plate with a smug lift of her chin. She refused to sample the disgusting concoction Sam served her instead of the mouth-watering roast dinner. “Probably all night long. We should stock up on sports drinks just to make sure that I don’t get a leg cramp.”
Kara’s immediate agreement sent flutters all through Lena and not even Alex could dampen her mood by making a disgusted noise.
“God, you’re both insufferable and I’m sick of it,” Alex complained and leaned back like she was too revolted to eat.
“So you won’t be finishing your pot roast?” Kara didn’t wait for an answer and helped herself to a chunk of tender beef from Alex’s plate. It fell apart before it reached her mouth, and she scooped it up with a chunk of crusty bread to shovel it into her face.
Kara’s joy over eating a delicious meal was something to behold. Lena was distracted by it and she didn’t think as she reached out to wipe some gravy off Kara’s cheek. Then she stuck her thumb into her mouth, and the intimacy of it finally caught up to her when Kara leaned in like she might just kiss her at the table.
By some miracle they managed to catch themselves before their lips met, and they shared an awkward laugh that twisted Lena’s stomach more than the scent of Sam’s weird lasagna.
Sam observed them with keenly narrowed eyes and waved her fork in the air for emphasis. “Debate it all you want, but in my eyes, you already make a fantastic couple.”
Lena blushed from her inability to argue with Sam’s opinion of their relationship. Her heart and womb were already committed, but a lot hinged on opening up to Kara about her feelings and the pregnancy.
For the time being, she communicated her love for Kara through food. She brought out pies and cakes that she made from scratch after an intensive crash course in baking that she found on the internet.
“Kara, how would you like something sweet and cream filled?” Lena extracted a certain satisfaction from dropping innuendos at the dinner table just to spite Alex.
Kara sat up and gleefully and dragged one of the cakes closer to admire the frosting. “Gosh, you know me so well.”
“Keep going and see where it gets you,” Alex threatened, in no mood to deal with their teasing and rowdy behavior. She swiped one of the apple pies and cut an oversized slice for herself.
“Oh, I will. It’s gotten me all of my favorite things so far,” Kara intoned obnoxiously and scooped up a large chunk of glazed peach from a slice of pie. “Mmm. Incredible.”
“How does that peach compare to mine?” Lena joked and eyed up the tinge of redness on Alex’s face as she jutted her chin.
Alex looked like she was seconds away from requesting a pair of ear plugs or leaving the table entirely. Sam laughed over the stand-off and dug into the desserts without any complaint. Thankfully it took a little while before the desserts summoned the kids – and they were none-the-wiser about the adult topic of conversation.
The issue was that Ruby took after her sire, and scooted into the spot next to Kara for the sole purpose of nagging her aunt. “Are you and Lena dating? If you got married, she would be our real relative.”
Emily hurried over with a set of cheap plastic crowns and handed them out to everyone. She seemed less bothered about goading Kara into a relationship. Instead of bothering with a chair of her own, she slipped into Lena’s lap and started to play with her hair.
“Lena, I want hair like yours,” Emily sulked and wove a very messy braid out of a few black strands.
“Then you should eat some of that healthy lasagna your mom made,” Lena remarked, not missing her opportunity to pawn off the meal on her niece. “It has a lot of nutrients.”
Emily dug into it and scrunched her face in immediate disgust. She spat the mouthful into a napkin that Lena passed to her without a word and went so far as to wipe her tongue like she had almost swallowed poison.
“Eww, that’s yucky! Don’t eat it.” Emily shoved the plate away and helped herself to some of the cake Lena was eating. Her little face lit up as she sampled the sweet treat and Lena sent a smug glance Sam’s way.
“Anything with cheese can’t be that bad, “Kara reasoned and helped herself to a forkful. “I’m sure it’s delicious.”
Lena knew the exact moment Kara regretted her decision by the pucker of her lips and the discreet way her nostrils flared in an attempt not to choke on the revolting flavors.
“Why don’t you finish it off since you’re enjoying it so much?” Lena suggested and slid the lasagna over to Kara with a wicked smile.
Over the months, Lena had found there were few things Kara simply couldn’t do, and insulting someone’s cooking was one of them.
It might have come across as cruel to put Kara in such a position, but it amused Lena endlessly to discover how Kara went along with it just to spare anyone’s feelings. Lena spooned up a decadent amount of cream with her cake and moaned while Kara fought to control her gag reflex as she scooped more into her mouth.
“Thanks. It’s—it’s so good,” Kara managed mid chew then gave up entirely. She swallowed the chunks with the ambition of limiting how long she had to taste each bite.
“Oh for god’s sake, give me that before you make yourself sick,” Sam sighed in offense and grabbed the meal from Kara with a knowing frown.
Sam no sooner walked into the kitchen in a huff than Alex directed the kids to follow her. “Hey, why don't you go help mom find the ice cream and we’ll make our own dessert bar?”
Ruby and Emily were gone in an instant, and Kara grabbed the can of squirt cream to fill her mouth before Sam came back and caught her dry heaving.
Alex leaned on one of her elbows to keep her voice from traveling and decided to share a secret with them. “Listen, I couldn’t say anything earlier, but I found a bunch of baby clothes hidden in the closet yesterday. I think Sam might be pregnant. Could you two watch the girls tomorrow so I can take her for a spa day and see if she’ll open up about it once she’s relaxed? She’s seemed tense the past few weeks. I chalked it up to work, but now I feel like an idiot for not asking her sooner.”
Lena pressed her lips together as she realized her best friend was already prepping for the arrival of her future god child. She blinked in stunned silence, her mouth falling agape and her palms sweating as she uttered the only sound that would come out of her throat. “Oh.”
Kara was either clueless to what was going on or a remarkably excellent bluffer, because she broke into a bright grin and clapped Alex on the shoulder in congratulations. “You know I love quality time with my nieces. Of course we’ll watch them. Take the whole weekend if you need it.”
“Seriously? That would be great.” Alex combed her fingers through her hair and sat up as Sam wandered back in with two pints of ice cream and enough sprinkles to give everyone diabetes.
Kara lined up with the same enthusiasm as the kids while Alex dished out the frozen dessert. That gave Lena the chance to drag Sam aside by the elbow for a private chat.
“What’s with all of the special meals you’ve been making for me?” Lena asked, her tone clipped but still too soft for scolding anyone. “If you continue doing that, you might as well send around my pregnancy announcement to everyone we know. Alex is going to figure it out sooner or later because of how you’ve been acting.”
They were out of hearing range and Lena did her best to keep her face neutral and her mannerisms to a minimum. Sam threw her hands up in resignation and glanced conspicuously down at Lena’s stomach.
“I’m just trying to help you out as a first time mom. You also used to skip meals all of the time. I don’t think that’s as much of a problem with Kara around, but I wanted to do my part to get you through this very important phase of fetal development.”
“Don’t you both want ice cream?” Alex called out, forcing them to drop the topic and head back to the dining table.
Lena didn’t want to start a fight with her best friend and tried to say as much without words. She set her soft eyes on Sam and expressed her worry with a little pout that never failed to tug on heart strings. They didn’t get another chance to discuss the baby or Kara’s role as the sire that night.
Emily ate so much ice cream she ran around the house and passed out. Alex carried her out to the car, which left Ruby and Sam to say their goodbyes and Kara to handle the clean-up.
An hour later, Lena was snuggled under a blanket on the couch and Kara stacked
wood in the fireplace.
“I told Sam that I’m pregnant in case you hadn’t guessed at the reason she’s hoarding baby clothes and making me all kinds of disgusting meals.” Lena wondered why she had no trouble talking about that subject but her lip quivered as she considered blurting out the DNA test results.
“Ooh.” Kara stood up after lighting the fire and dusted her hands off with laughter lines forming around her mouth. “That explains why the lasagna was terrible.”
“I still can’t believe you ate it,” Lena lilted with a fond smile.
She wasn’t in the habit of considering all of the things Kara endured for her sake, but it was starting to add up. Between the remedy drinks, the extra pair of hands on the farm, and all of the attention Kara so vigorously gave her, it was easy to imagine a life together.
Lena was too afraid to think about it for long. Fairytale endings were only meant for movies and books, and she dreaded the idea of how her circumstances were going to change. Kara was with her because there were no strings attached, and Lena needed to remember that.
“I signed us up for a whole weekend of babysitting, and instead of Sam getting the chance to relax, she’s going to be stressed out about keeping your secret, isn’t she?” Kara settled on the couch beside Lena and rucked up the blanket so it draped across her knees.
Lena smirked as she imagined her friend’s future torment. “I’m not sure which of us is being punished more for your generous offer. Her or me.”
“My money’s on Sam. At least we get to have fun with the girls.”
Kara’s nonchalant reaction went hand in hand with how she coaxed Lena to stretch her legs out. She didn’t utter a word as she began to massage Lena’s sore feet beneath the blanket.
Lena reclined back and enjoyed the slow press of Kara’s thumb over her arches. She summoned up a vision of domestic bliss that looked a lot like her current circumstances with Kara. The one difference was that in her fantasies Kara lived with her and they would have more than one child.
That should have frightened her into kicking Kara out for the night, but for a change, Lena followed the whims of her imagination to bring up the topic of children.
“You’re good with your nieces,” Lena commented, still in a realm of her own creation and distracted by the thought of Kara with their baby in her arms. “I certainly hope you’re not going to bail on me once I give birth. I’ve read practically every parenting book I could get my hands on and I still don’t feel prepared to raise a child.”
“I can honestly say it never once crossed my mind,” Kara admitted with a heavy look toward Lena that implied something else had. She looked ready to say it with the way her chin jutted and her jaw tensed, though she evidently thought better of it and let the moment pass.
Lena stewed in the silence for as long as it lingered. She had the sneaking suspicion that Kara was keeping something from her, though she couldn’t be sure what.
“I don’t think anyone is ever really prepared, but I know you’re going to be a great mom,” Kara supplied when she caught Lena pouting. She massaged along the ball of Lena’s foot and grinned when the extra pressure elicited a moan. “I see how patient you are with Ruby and Emily and how you dote on them every chance you get. It’s why I didn’t hesitate to say we would watch them. I know we can handle it.”
“Okay, but the girls are old enough to do things for themselves. We’re not the ones responsible for guiding them through life,” Lena intoned with the bizarre and belated realization that she would forever be linked to Kara through their offspring. Regardless of whether they ended up together, Kara was responsible and Lena had no doubt that they would have to figure out how to co-parent.
Kara wouldn’t turn her back on a child. She wouldn’t even leave one of the sick chickens in the barn by itself over night.
“What if I mess this kid up? You know I come from a dysfunctional family.” Lena took comfort in venting her fears except for the most obvious one she should have confided.
“You’re not going to mess up, and for what it’s worth, you have my support.” Kara fixed her slipping glasses and another glimmer of emotion appeared in her eyes. “We’re all going to be just fine.”
Lena chose to trust Kara and fell into a silent and contemplative state while a movie droned on in the background. The soothing warmth of Kara massaging her swollen ankles lulled her eyelids shut, and the next time they lifted she was nestled in Kara’s strong arms as she carried her up to bed.
Lena had no idea how long she had been out, but the sky was dark and her limbs were heavy as she sprawled out in bed with a yawn.
Her bleary eyes found the clock on her nightstand and she frowned at the time. Kara must have sat with her for hours so as not to disturb her rest.
Lena did the unthinkable by catching Kara’s hand before she could try to tuck her in and tried to pull her onto the bed to no avail.
“Stay,” Lena whispered, suddenly shy in the face of desires that had nothing to do with sex and everything to do with comfort and connection.
“Let me take my boots off while you get comfy.” Kara soothed her with a gentle touch and slipped out of her clothes. She crawled onto the bed to spoon Lena without trying to get handsy and kissed Lena goodnight.
Lena fell asleep with a smile on her face, and when she woke the next morning, it was with renewed energy and the belief that she could handle anything.
All factors considered, she should have known she was inviting trouble with that sort of mindset.
She found Kara in the kitchen with more pancakes than either of them could eat, and then realized belatedly that they were on babysitting duty.
Alex dropped the kids off before Lena had even finished her morning coffee, and Emily wouldn’t stop talking about feeding the chickens.
“Oh, honey, Kara’s already done that,” Lena tried to explain, but Emily already clutched her plate of pancakes in her little hands and ran off to unceremoniously fling them into the coop.
“Usually mom doesn’t let us have syrup for breakfast. She says it makes us too hyper,” Ruby informed Kara with glee as she upended a bottle of maple syrup to drench her stack. The pancakes looked like they were floating in sugar and Ruby gobbled them up before Kara could react.
“Let’s soak some of that up with oatmeal,” Kara suggested and lifted the maple syrup out of reach as she raided Lena’s pantry for something healthier. “You want to have energy for all the fun activities we have planned, right?”
It turned out that having energy wasn’t the problem. The kids were bursting with it, and after a hearty breakfast with the additions of oatmeal and fruit, Lena couldn’t keep up with their pace at the park.
“Be careful!” Lena called out as the girls climbed the monkey bars and dangled upside down. She lagged behind with fears of stitches and cracked skulls on her mind.
“They’re just being kids,” Kara reassured her, much more in the know about her nieces’ habits and abilities. “They do that all of the time. Didn’t you do this kind of thing when you were younger?”
“No, my parents didn’t believe in unstructured free time, and my mother told me that parks are where homeless people live.” Lena frowned at the memories of her childhood and the afternoons she spent in lessons instead of interacting with peers.
Kara gaped at her in concern and headed over to the swings where the kids pretended to be launching themselves into outer space.
“Oh no, it’s an alien!” Ruby shrieked and pushed her younger sister nearly fast enough to throw her into the sand around the large swing set.
“Hurry up and get into your pod,” Kara prompted and jumped into the game by holding the chains of two swings. One was for her niece and the other for Lena. “You too. Have a seat and let me show you what it’s like to have some unstructured fun.”
Lena narrowed her eyes with a good mind to decline the offer, but there was something so very charming about Kara’s insistence she participate. She pursed her lips playfully and fluttered her lashes, aware that her scent had turned terribly flirtatious.
Ruby hopped into place and pulled Lena by the hand to join her in the adjacent swing. “C’mon Lena, let’s see how high we can go.”
“Hold on tight!” Kara directed and pushed Ruby first before she took hold of the seat beneath Lena to send her into the air.
The exhilarating rush made Lena laugh, and she watched as the kids kicked their legs to go faster. She mimicked their behavior, soaring away from Kara and then dropping back to the comforting hands that grazed her hips on every push.
“I would have loved this as a kid,” Lena confided, breathless and amused by the joy that Kara radiated.
“Fun doesn’t have an age limit,” Kara stated, and then went on to prove that to Lena over the course of the day.
Once they returned home, Kara created a blanket fort in the living room, made popcorn, and told spooky stories that they had to revise several times so that Emily wasn’t too frightened. By early evening, they roasted marshmallows in front of the fireplace and the girls lined up all of their dolls.
“This one can be yours, Lena,” Ruby decided and handed her one of the better-kept baby dolls with sleep-tilt eyes and long lashes.
Lena cradled the doll like it was real and tried not to look like an awkward participant in their game. “I’m not sure I’m qualified to take care of your baby. Maybe you can show me what to do?”
“No, she’s your baby, and Kara gets to be your mate,” Emily aggressively dictated and passed off a fake bottle of milk to her aunt. “Your baby is very hungry. You should feed her.”
The girls effortlessly spun together a story that knitted them together as a family, and Lena couldn’t believe how the details were true to life.
“Sit closer to each other,” Ruby demanded and gave them a smile that showed off her partially grown-in new teeth. She reached out to tilt the baby upright and open its blinky eyes. “See? Your baby is happier now.”
Kara didn’t seem to be going through the stage of shock that Lena was experiencing. She smiled down at the plastic doll and fed her without incident or refusal to play along. Lena must have stopped breathing once or twice while she watched.
“You’re in luh-uve, so now you have two babies,” Emily declared and shoved another baby into Lena’s arms like childbirth was an instant process. “Want anymore?”
“Two is enough,” Lena replied with a wary glance at her niece, in case the kid had super powers to ensure Kara knocked her up again soon after their first baby was born.
“Maybe we can have three or four,” Kara persuaded, blushing over the bridge of her nose as she glanced at the other dolls.
Lena was ashamed of how quickly she acquiesced to that proposal and lifted another doll to pass into Kara’s buff arms. The hypothetical scenario shouldn’t have stirred any feelings within Lena and yet she gawked at the alpha with a peculiar case of longing to see her with twins.
She cradled the dolls a little more closely to hold back the impulse to say as much and then avoided making eye contact in case it was evident in her eyes.
The problem with silence, Lena soon realized, was that the kids would always find a way to fill it.
“What are their names?” Ruby asked with all the innocence of a child unaware of the panic attack her line of questioning was causing.
Lena’s chest tightened before she could open her mouth, and then she choked out at a delay, “I have no idea. How should I know their names?”
She swung her terrified gaze onto Kara as she was seized with endless doubt about her abilities to parent.
What kind of mother didn’t know the name of her child? A bad one, Lena reasoned, and balked at Emily repeating her thoughts right back at her.
“They have to have names! All babies have names–”
“Emma, Ella, Lara and Clara,” Kara stated matter of fact and pointed to each of the dolls so nobody would be confused as to which one was which.
The fast save startled Lena, and she noticed the scarlet blush on Kara’s cheeks. “Is this what you do in your spare time, just make a list of baby names in case you need them in the future?”
There was a touch of unfounded anger to her tone that Kara picked up on, and she bit her tongue to stop accusations from flying out of her mouth.
“I might have browsed through a few books before I gave them to you and I guess some caught my eye.” Kara raised her chin to appear aloof but there was a crinkle of anxiety between her brows as she stared down at the dolls in her arms.
“I like Ella the most,” Ruby commented and pretended to wipe at the little one's face after Lena was done with feeding it.
“So do I,” Lena confided under her breath and flicked her lashes in Kara’s direction.
Just as Lena started to become more comfortable with their foray into parenting, Emily cut the game short by running off to use the bathroom. During the break, Ruby tucked all of the dolls in for the night and curled up with a book.
Lena braced herself for the first available opportunity that she could talk to Kara in private. They settled the girls into one of the spare bedrooms, and Lena thought she would finally have the chance to have an honest discussion.
All was quiet in the house, except for Lena’s phone as it dinged twice in succession with messages from Sam:
I cracked. I’m so sorry, Lena.
Alex knows.
The mature thing would have been to inform Kara of her sire status immediately and not hide in the shower for half an hour to avoid her entirely. Lena opted for cowardice in her blind panic and spent an ungodly amount of time soaping herself up in a vain attempt to wash away her guilt.
It didn’t really matter that Alex knew. It wasn’t like she was privy to the fact that Kara was the one who knocked her up. Not even Sam was aware of that, and good thing too, or Lena’s whole world would be shifting beneath her feet more than it was already.
Lena deluded herself into believing the worst part was over. She slipped into a clean negligee and robe with a plan to salvage their night with sex and faltered by her bedroom window when the sound of a truck pulled into the driveway. It wasn’t exactly late, but she hadn’t expected Alex to show up for the girls until the morning.
She watched in silence as Kara rushed out of the house to meet her sister on the lawn and cracked the window open to listen in on the conversation.
“Okay, what’s the big emergency?” Kara asked without bothering to greet Alex first.
“It’s Lena,” Alex uttered with a pained squint like she considered herself the bearer of bad news. “Kara, she’s pregnant.”
Of all the responses Alex probably expected, Kara laughing in her face likely wasn’t on the list. Lena worried her lip as she observed Kara shrugging at Alex’s confusion.
“And you thought you had to drive all the way here to tell me that to my face? I already know, Alex.”
“You did? Why the hell didn’t you tell me?” Alex sputtered with outstretched hands that curled in frustration.
“It’s not my place to say anything,” Kara fired back with the same energy and released a heavily protective scent to defend Lena’s decisions. “When Lena wants to tell people, she will.”
Alex looked flabbergasted as she stared at Kara and blinked in disbelief. “And you’re okay with this?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Kara challenged with her fists pressed to her hips. “It doesn’t make a difference to me.”
“This isn’t funny, Kara,” Alex lectured. “Lena is in a really vulnerable place right now She doesn’t have an alpha, and you’re not taking her condition seriously.”
