With the coming of the first seasonal frost, Lena planned to lead a life of stricter habits. She simply forgot herself after the pleasant occasion of the festival.
One blustery morning, she slipped her hands into her new warm gloves and pulled on the thickest fur she owned. She thought of the counting house with its roaring fire, and Kara’s enclosed office that was furnished much differently since their marriage. The seat at the desk was now cushioned, and near the window was a comfortable chaise that belonged to her. In midsummer, she rested upon it whenever she made the journey into town. She imagined herself in the same state of repose with Kara close at hand. The bitterness of the wind was no deterrent with the memory of her mate’s sweetness in mind.
Before any of the servants brought in her breakfast tray, Lena packed a basket with slices of bread, cheese, and hard boiled eggs. She tucked a large piece of her leftover pie into the bundle and called for the coachman to take her into town. He had no reason to deny her, and soon they departed into the cold in good spirits.
They drove over loose cobbles and beneath stooping trees that touched the roof of the carriage. Lena peeked through the small round window and breathed in the icy air that entered into the small space of the vehicle. The confining household was long behind her, and the sky shed a few tears for the fallen leaves on the ground. She remained awake and thoughtful throughout the ride, and soon the coachman opened the door to help her down.
The town’s square was quiet, and as Lena stepped into the counting houses, she noticed the old ashes from the day before still in the fireplace. A young alpha ran along to sweep it out and stack new wood, and others sat at their desks, already diligently beginning the work of the morning.
Winn spotted her from across the room and hurried over to usher her out of the way. “Madam, what are you doing here?” His voice sounded much squeaker and high-pitched as he addressed her as a lady of the household in the presence of Clark’s staff.
“I’ve brought lunch for my husband,” Lena intoned, clutching her heavy large basket close and smiling as she placed a hand on her equally heavy stomach.
Questions lingered in Winn’s large eyes, which gazed beyond her shoulder for any signs of Nia. He came to his own conclusions with an unimpressed squint and tightened his lips in a grimace at the trouble he perceived them to be in. “I trust Clark is still full from his breakfast. Why don’t you return home and I will set aside the basket for later?”
“I would much rather hand it over myself.”
The tension between them was slight enough to go unnoticed and Lena remained calm in their confrontation so as to appear reasonable. Should the gentlemen at work give them any thought, they would believe they were having a pleasant conversation.
“I’m afraid Clark has a very busy schedule this morning. His first meeting will commence any moment now,” Winn warned her with a fixed smile that threatened to reveal more teeth than warmth. He waved his hand toward the door in an effort to shoo her off, and bristled at her audacity when she pushed by him with the basket.
“Then the sooner I drop this off the better. I’ll see myself in.” Lena moved with remarkable grace given her current state and spared no knock as she entered Clark’s domain. She considered it a victory upon seeing Kara’s stoic face warm to her presence, and then shut the door with a lack of regard for Winn who was already over the threshold.
“I tried to persuade her to return home,” Winn wheezed, perhaps from pain or the fear of repercussions that may befall him.
“Of that I’m certain, but you should know by now my wife is nothing if not persistent,” Clark uttered with the faintest glimmer of amusement in his eyes. He stood with all the arrogance of an alpha ready to discipline their omega and waved Winn off to tend to other matters. “I’ll see to her myself.”
Winn bowed out of the doorway and Kara locked the door to afford them privacy. She watched Lena set the basket aside with observant eyes that missed nothing, and then stepped closer to catch her by the chin. “You appear pleased that you slipped out without a chaperone. Winn is not anxious by nature but I know his tells, just as I know yours. What was so important you would risk your safety, our pups, and my ire so early in the morn?”
To anyone who may have overheard it would sound like the beginnings of a lecture. Lena had grown accustomed to every inflection or lack thereof in Kara’s tone, and she knew quite intimately that this was not one.
“I was reminiscing of summer time and the pleasant days when I visited you. Summer is far off, but I felt we could still recapture the spirit of it. I want you close to me ever so much more now, and you insist upon coming here each day to see to your own business affairs. Why shouldn’t I join you if I am well enough?”
Had they been at odds, Lena could have burdened Kara with the responsibility of drawing her away from hearth and home. She preferred to use her wiles to smooth over their disagreements as of late. Their arguments had become a softer exchange, and Lena knew she was above reproach as Kara’s hand slipped onto her cheek.
She breathed in the pungency of spice on Kara’s skin as their lips came together in tender greeting.
Warmth blossomed throughout Lena’s limbs and she swooned into Kara’s embrace. Despite the gentleness with which Kara handled her, Lena could feel the strength beneath those touches. She parted her lips for Kara’s passion and whined as the hand on her middle shifted up her body to caress her breasts.
“I see you've brought me a great many things to sink my teeth into and yet the only thing that tempts me so is the quiver of your beautiful neck.” Kara nosed beneath the elegant slope of Lena’s jaw to adorn it with kisses, each interspersed with the faintest scrape of her teeth.
Those little nips became far more sensual with the pucker of Kara’s mouth and Lena craned her head back to receive them. She trembled with the anticipation of feeling the sting of their bond renewed and gasped when Kara drew back at the first sharp knock on the door.
Kara gave her one more lingering kiss before stepping back. She pushed a flicker of annoyance behind the mask of Clark and escorted her out. “Perhaps waiting for such a fulfilment will encourage you to behave for once while I tend to business.”
Hank Henshaw awaited them with curious, narrow eyes and a friendly smile on his face. “Good morning, Clark. I was not aware your charming wife would be joining you.”
“She’s not,” Clark declared and swept his arm inward to invite Henshaw to enter. “Mrs. Danvers is planning to do some shopping in town this morning and she decided to pay me a visit beforehand.”
For once, Lena didn’t question the lies Kara told while dealing with other alphas. She curtsied to Henshaw and gestured out towards the millinery. “Clark has promised me several new hats and hairpieces. He’s spoiled me rotten with gifts these last few months.”
“Yes, well, I dare you say you deserve it for carrying his pups.” Henshaw tapped his finger against his chin and glanced down at her swollen middle. “It was a pleasure seeing you, and I promise not to take up too much of your husband’s time with my business.”
“Take all of the time you need. I’m off to browse.” Lena summoned one of her most winning smiles and allowed Clark to the shut the door.
Her plan was to locate Winn and ask him to accompany her.
There would be no harm in picking out a few items to corroborate the story she gave Henshaw, but a sudden pain stopped her from following through with her ideas. Lately she had been experiencing more frequent pains and pressure from the positioning of the twins in her belly. This was a more pronounced sensation that caused her to hesitate in front of Clark’s door.
Hank Henshaw’s deep baritone didn’t easily carry through the thick oak, though Lena pressed herself against it due to pain and accidentally eavesdropped.
“I must commend you on how effectively you’ve tamed the wild nature of your wife. Most alphas rely purely on dominance, but you understand the true art of keeping an omega compliant. It coincides with discipline and distraction. Pretty little things like Lena require the mindless frivolities of spending coin. It gives them a sense of purpose.”
“I’ve noticed a small allowance here and there can lift any omega’s spirit, and in turn, they feel indebted to you for it,” Clark remarked in agreement, although his dry tone held no emotion.
Lena hoped her mate did not believe such nonsense.
“I can imagine the favors it will incur and the servitude it breeds,” Henshaw chuckled. “They might fight against their very nature, but you and I both see the benefits of keeping an omega homebound and heavy with child. It’s why I wished to speak with you so urgently. Allocating such a grand space for omegas to congress in town under the watchful eye of the council was indeed a brilliant way to keep them underfoot, though I’m concerned with the books they wish to read.”
“You can rest easy on that matter,” Clark assured him plainly in the same even monotone that expressed nothing. “The omegas of our town won’t fill their heads with anything beyond recipes and gossip. I have already ensured the library is stocked with cook books, knitting guides and everything else an omega would ever need to know about keeping a happy home.”
Clark’s smug tone infuriated Lena beyond rationality, but it was Henshaw’s retort that tipped her into madness.
“Good. Lena Luthor was once viewed as a stain on the fine reputation of this town, and now as your wife she has come to represent the most sterling example of your control. Keep those reins tight on her. Make her submit to you often and in public, and I foresee that her movement will die out.”
Lena twisted the handle on the door and let it fall inward with a mind to confront Henshaw. She opened her mouth to berate him and all that came out was the most awful groan. Her labor began in earnest and she realized the occasional twinges that she felt over the last several days were the precursor to giving birth. Between her high tolerance for pain and all of the pleasant diversions, she hadn’t noticed the changes in her body. Tears sprang from her eyes, eclipsing the sight of Kara’s shocked face and the rest of the staff that scrambled over to help.
“How dare you?” Lena gasped out in between screams and lashed out with more aggression than ever before. She swatted Henshaw, but he mistook her rage as the outcome of childbirth and not his actions.
“Gentle, gentle, dove,” Henshaw soothed and directed the workers at the counting house to assist. “Everyone pitch in now. It seems that the Danvers are going to bring their children into the world today. One of you must go and fetch the doctor. You should also find Eliza and Alexandra at the apothecary and summon them here.”
All of Clark’s calm control and confident demeanor lapsed momentarily with the realization that their pups were on the way. Where strength once resided in those oceanic eyes a glimmer of fear now shined, every bit as petrified as the screams Lena howled in the counting house.
“Quickly, bring her over to the chaise,” Clark commanded, though several omegas had already barged in and begun escorting Lena over to the much larger and sturdy table by the fireplace. “We need a basin of water, and cloths.”
Lena’s agony erupted along with her anger and she snared Clark by the wrist to drag him along with a grip so fierce it ripped the cuff of his shirt.
“I will never lie with you again! I was a fool and now I have to deal with the consequences.”
She ranted until the urge to scream took over and she wailed at the top of her lungs into Kara’s face. The omegas of their household gathered around to help her onto the table. She arched from the terrible spasms and cried from the stress. Nia appeared with strips of fabric and a large basin of water, and one of the maids began patting Lena’s hot forehead with a cool, damp cloth.
“Oh, Lena, it’s going to be fine,” Nia instructed, taking her hand and giving her the chance to calm herself. “Look at me. You know what to do and I’m by your side.”
“I am, too,” Alexandra announced and stepped forward with a bag in hand. She arranged her supplies on the end of the table and cut through Lena’s clothes to check on the progress of the birth.
Clark stood stalk still in the middle of the commotion and required a firm push from Eliza to get out of the way. “You needn’t be here for this. Your presence will only serve as a distraction.”
Despite the warning, Lena witnessed her mate’s hesitancy and inhaled the sharp tang of her panic. Lena sensed it didn’t pertain to only their children and realized even in her pained delirium that Kara was most worried for her.
She snarled all the same when struck with another contraction, teeth bared and eyes wild with accusations.
“Your wife is in good hands, Clark. Come, we must toast this wonderful occasion.” Henshaw clapped his hand about Clark’s shoulder and angled him away from the horrific sight of Lena gasping for breath.
“I had the same look about me when Ruby came into the world,” Morgan intoned and aided Henshaw in directing Clark out of the counting house to spare him the gory miracle about to befall Lena. “Trust the women to handle this without us. We have no place here.”
“Cowards!” Lena seethed from between clenched teeth, though she hardly wanted an audience present while in her most vulnerable state.
“Hush now and sip this. The pain will be forgotten the moment you have your babes in your arms.” Eliza soothed her with a hand beneath her head and lifted a small vial of tonic to her lips.
The flavor reminded Lena of bitter berries. The mixture helped to dull the agony of birth and Alexandra directed her to push at intervals.
Lena screamed, grunted awfully, and sniveled in between the worst of the contractions. She cried even louder when she realized that Clark had actually gone, but all of the omegas of their house flocked around to tend to her.
For all of the fuss and misery, the babes came at a fine pace and without injury. Their little bodies were covered in a whitish and crimson film, and Lena barely glimpsed their scrunched faces before Eliza took them off to clean them.
Alexandra and Nia delivered them back to her proudly, and Lena sobbed from joy instead of pain.
The two babes opened their eyes for their first look at the world, and that was when Clark stepped back into the office.
Lena looked upon Kara’s face with serenity now that her labor was over.
Even without the chance to talk in private and question where she had gone, Lena assumed that Kara must have been humoring Henshaw that morning. It still disturbed her to think of that conversation, but with her children in her arms and all of the smiling omegas around her, she felt at peace and unwilling to dampen her own happiness.
“Clark, come and see your children,” Eliza encouraged, much more welcoming of Kara’s presence without the other alphas close at hand. “They’re already alert and Lena is doing fine.”
No one would be able to discern the status of the newborns apart from the parents.
Lena could tell that her children were both girls, one a future alpha and the other a future omega. She knew that an alpha birth was always a celebrated occasion and that Clark’s friends would line up to congratulate him.
Kara looked hopeful and happy as she approached the table where Lena was propped up with the babies nestled to her chest.
Love took many forms in the Danvers’ household, and Kara showed hers right then with tears of relief. Silent droplets streaked her cheeks and she came forward to press her trembling lips first to Lena’s forehead, and then to each of their children’s faces. She struggled for words, opting instead to nuzzle into Lena’s claim with reverence and gratitude.
“What a marvelous sight you three are,” Kara whispered with pride and lightly petted Lena’s damp hair away from her flushed face. “To think I was worried at all when they have you as a mother, Lena. I pray they share your strength and your sheer force of will.”
The romantic murmur inspired the omegas of their household to clutch one another’s hands and sigh wistfully. They circled around the couple to give them privacy from anyone who might try to enter the counting house, and that gave them a moment of peace in which Lena could recover.
“They have your looks,” Lena whispered and glanced down at the golden fuzz on the crown of each little head. “May they also have your skills with diplomacy.”
It was not quite the apology that Lena intended to make, but she trusted Kara expected a tongue lashing out of her once the birth pangs set in.
They did not discuss Henshaw’s visit or Lena’s feelings related to his views. For the rest of the afternoon, they welcomed the townspeople in to meet their children, and everyone spoke with much animation about Lena’s untimely delivery of the babes.
Like all other things in her life, it seemed to be a climactic event that brought drama to their small town. No one would soon forget the birthday of the Danvers’ twins.
Even months afterward, Nia heard people recounting the story in the streets, and she came home to tell it to Lena and all of the household staff.
Most people speculated that Lena required a longer resting period when she didn’t return to town soon after the birth. Lena simply took a liking to being at home with her babies and seeing to their daily care. She could have passed them off to the household staff as many omegas chose to do, but she wanted to be present for each milestone.
They named the babes Adelaide and Caelan, and Lena called them Addy and Caely at times that no one was around.
Kara feared they would have to raise Caelan as she had been raised with a dual identity to protect the interests of their household.
As young as they were, both babes could be dressed in the same little gowns and bonnets, and no one bothered to ask where they would fit into society. Lena saw their features change by the week — and winter transformed them into curious infants that outgrew the first sets of clothes that Nia sewed for them.
Kara doted on her expanded family and often fell asleep near the cradles in the middle of the night. Lena often slept better due to her mate’s vigilance.
One bright but chilly morning, she stepped in to the nursery to find Kara asleep with the babies on the large comfortable rocker.
It remained a rare sight to see Kara without any trace of Clark in her mannerisms. Lena contented herself with these brief instances and imagined who Kara might have been without the heavy burden of keeping up her facade. In the early morning with her hair unbound and her shirt loose and crinkled from holding their babes, Kara appeared softer and finally at peace.
The same could not be said for Addy, who lay awake still swaddled in the crook of Kara’s right arm. The little one babbled quietly up at her sire and bubbles formed on her lips, which Lena carefully wiped away.
Caely remained in a sound sleep, tucked safely into Kara’s left arm while she twitched and dreamed with puckered lips. She looked every bit like her sire with a crinkle between her brows, and Lena wondered what they were both dreaming.
The babes would be in need of feeding, though Lena was loath to wake her mate when she rested so serenely with their girls.
“You first, my sweet,” Lena cooed to Addy, and hardly raised her at all when Kara stirred from slumber with reflexes faster than Lena’s when she was fully awake.
She caught Addy as if panicked she was about to drop her, and then relaxed when she blinked at the sight of Lena standing before her. “My dear, why are you not resting? I am fine with the children.”
“I know, but soon they will wake the whole household with their hunger. I did not mean to disturb you.” Lena welcomed Addy into her arms with the proud scent of Kara’s pheromones enveloping her senses.
She took a seat by the window in the chair where she read to the twins before naps and slipped her gown off her shoulder to nurse Addy.
Once or twice, she caught Kara’s gaze on her bosom, and not out of reverence for nourishing their pup.
They had lain with one another only to sleep in the past months, despite Lena assuring her mate she was recovered enough to partake in greater pleasures. Ever the stubborn alpha, Kara had refused to entertain the idea out of respect, though it was clear they both longed to return to their usual routines.
“I had best fetch Nia to fill a bath for you before I leave for the counting house,” Kara uttered the second she noticed Lena’s eyes upon her, and then stood up to place Caely back in her crib.
“Perhaps you should stay at home with me today,” Lena mused with a cunning lift of her eyebrow. She glanced innocently down at the babe in her arms in case Kara should guess at her thoughts. “I could use a bit of extra help. I still have the last of the preparations to finish before we welcome our guests this weekend for our celebration of the twins.”
The event had not been a surprise to her, nor did Lena require any of Kara’s input on hosting their guests. She had selected all of the food for the party beforehand, and the kitchen staff had their instructions as to the courses to serve in order. Insofar as taking care of the children, Lena managed without much help during the day. There was just one reason she wished for Kara to remain at home with her.
On occasion when the weather permitted, Lena placed both of her babies into a push carriage and walked them through the courtyard of their home. The babes looked so alike as to be nearly indistinguishable, except Addy’s hair was a softer honey gold. Lena stroked the fuzz as her infant nursed. She changed her cloth diaper and repeated the same steps for Caelan.
“Nia has reserved the morning with the twins. She wishes to take them out in their little push carriage and fuss over them.” Lena bundled each of the babies into warmer gowns and bonnets. “One of the other girls from the kitchen will see to my bath.”
“So what use can I be if I spend the day at home?” Kara asked, obtuse to her own detriment.
“Oh, I have many things I need you to do. First you can take our children down to Nia.” Lena smiled with the perfect tact for getting her mate to do her bidding. She tucked their babies into a shared carrying basket and handed it over to Kara.
She came to notice a difference in her mate once the children were born. Kara did not defer to her exactly when it came to matters of the babes, yet she certainly showed an eager attentiveness, which was why Kara did not argue with her gentle demands. She left with haste to dress for the day ahead before returning to collect the twins and take them downstairs.
In spite of the changes in their household, appearances had to be maintained. Lena had long since understood that Kara would sooner risk death than disgrace by allowing anyone to gaze upon her in a dishevelled state. While Lena suspected all of their staff knew of Clark’s secret, her mate carried on with complete discretion lest someone else uncover it.
Lena slipped away to her own room to browse through the fine dresses and skirts Nia had sewn for her with an inkling she might not find herself wearing any if her machinations worked.
She gathered fragrant dabbing oils to apply to her skin after she was cleansed, and then found the tub already filled with warm water upon her arrival.
Lena used her own beguiling perfume to lure Kara back to her, and sank into the tub with a content sigh just as her mate appeared. “I request you stay with me while I bathe. I find myself unsteady first thing in the morning. It must be exhaustion from the constant feeding and from stirring in the night. I sleep rather fitfully when you’ve left me.”
Concern clouded Kara’s piercing gaze, though not enough to block out the glimmer of lust as she approached. “And here I thought you had slumbered sweetly while I tended to the pups.”
Lena had slept without awakening once during the night, and the rosiness of her cheeks was a testament to her restored vitality. She did not wish to deceive Kara about her well being. At the same time, she could not convince Kara to remain at home without some scheming.
“I have not been able to rest peacefully since the birth of our children, but they are not responsible for my poor sleep. Rather it is your association with Mr. Henshaw that puts me on edge. You didn’t think I had forgotten the conversation that took place in the counting house on the day I gave birth, did you?”
Lena often entertained troubling thoughts in her waking hours related to the private exchange that she overheard by mistake. She would never agree with Kara’s efforts to maintain the status quo, but for once she had walled herself off from her rage and focused on the more intimate matters of tending to her children.
That was her approach for months, but her indignation was returning and seemed to be in accompaniment with her other rising passions. She missed their heated repartee and her cunt ached for the attentions only Kara could give her.
“I thought you wise enough to let the matter go, yet I see you merely bided your time.” Kara noted with a slant of her lips to convey her displeasure. She came forward as Lena dipped the sponge in water, eager to glimpse her nakedness beneath the restlessly shifting bubbles. “You cannot shut a man like Henshaw out, Lena. I must entertain him in order to gain his trust. His fascination with you is alarming.”
Lena scoffed at the assumption and drew suds over her pale arms and neck, covering her claim with a petty indignation. To some, the precursor of an argument would ruin their day. For them, it was a sordid act of foreplay.
Lena’s skin already prickled with anticipation and her cunt tightened in small pulsations. “You say that as if I am not someone to be fascinated by. Perhaps that’s why our marital bed has grown cold. Are you so busy entertaining Henshaw that you forgot your attention ought to be on me?”
The stinging remark flared Kara’s nostrils and she drew herself up with aplomb.
The arrogant posturing would have been enough to cow Lena before the children, but Kara had been soft with her for such a prolonged period that it no longer held such weight.
Kara’s outrage failed to fall from her parted lips on account of Lena’s salacious maneuvering. She propped her leg over the tub under the guise of cleansing herself.
The slow submergence of the sponge along her inner thigh pushed bubbles away from her apex, and Lena ensured her mate could see what she had been missing.

Kara towered over the tub, as rigid and imposing as the length that grew beneath her trousers, and growled at Lena’s insolence. “You dare question what I feel for you?”
The timber of Kara’s voice aroused Lena’s senses and she breathed deeper so that her breasts protruded from the water. She caught Kara’s eyes falling to the stiffened buds of her aching nipples, and brushed over each with the sponge.
“I question a great many things when my mate fails to inform me of certain facts. Specifically, that our sanctuary in town is only meant to serve as a place for omegas to learn to sew and gossip. I wonder what I will tell everyone when I feel ready to return there.”
The quiet threat brought Kara’s teeth together and she appeared incensed by the implication that Lena would stoop so low as to gossip about her.
“Lena–” Kara breathed in warning, her outrage encouraging deeper lungfuls of Lena’s seductive scent.
“Something woeful, maybe,” Lena uttered with a haughty raised brow and disregard for the anxiety she thrust upon her mate. “A tale of neglect to fill their pretty little heads instead of real knowledge.”
“I have handled Henshaw the only way I know how, and I handle you just the same,” Kara ranted, offended by Lena’s view that she had failed her in some way. “I have been nothing but attentive to you and our children.”
“Not in the ways you should if you wish to ever have more,” Lena spat with a quiver of her chin that Kara caught in her large hand.
They stared at one another for only a moment, heated and raw and every bit as in love as they had always been.
Kara knelt to snatch the sponge straight out of Lena’s grasp, and scrubbed at her breasts to stimulate her nipples with firm, deliberate strokes. She plucked at the tender peaks with her fingertips and spared no thought to her shirt sleeve as she plunged her hand beneath the water to feel the slick gathered between Lena’s private lips.
“Most omegas are grateful for the reprieve after fulfilling their duties, but once again, you must stand out from the rest.”

But they have definitely moved beyond having serious fights, so that's good, and it's def. more aligned with foreplay for them. Henshaw has some interesting developments ahead. I don't think I highlighted this as much in the chapter as intended, but one of my rules for this verse is that only the parents can sense what the pups are at first (beyond being an alpha/omega/beta).
