The morning after spending the night at Kara’s place, Lena came up with a plan to resolve all of her problems in a single afternoon. She would create a line-up of the alphas who attended the party and put them through a few different trials to determine which one of them sired her pup.

Felicity glanced at Kara and pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose before raising her hand in a slight wave. For a split second they both blinked at each other’s flustered complexion.
Lena was struck by the similarities between them, and she stepped aside in silent invitation for them to come inside.
“I got here as fast as I could. Where’s the furniture?” Felicity asked with a polite amount of interest. Of the four of them, her pheromones were the softest, but she postured all the same once Lena closed the door.
“You’re all so kind to rush out here just to move some things around for me.” Lena laid it on thick and sweetened the air with her flirtation.
She would need a few DNA samples to test in her private mini-lab, and until she collected them, she would have to seem attainable.
That was easier said than done with Kara posturing close by and strapping on a weight-lifting belt. She moved around her competition with a no-nonsense attitude and headed straight for the couch in Lena’s Instagram picture.
“It’s this one, right?” Kara double checked and hoisted it off the floor without anyone’s help. “Where do you want it?”

Three fallen trees sat at the edge of the property, and Kara handed out axes to each of her competitors.

“You’re shaking it too much,” Sara hissed when their tree rattled beneath her grip. “Go slower and deeper.”

Kara and Felicity finished roughly at the same time, and Lena watched on with rapt interest as both of the spectacle-wearing alphas lifted a chunk of wood and rushed to the nearest stump to split it.
Kara barely reached it first, and Felicity faltered at the last second as Kara slammed the wood down with a snarl.

Kara and Felicity started at opposite ends of the tree and cleaved their way through it at a remarkable speed. They were shoulder to shoulder by the end, and then the ensuing race began to gather up all of the pieces.
By the time they cut all of the wood, Sara and Beth had already stacked everything under the tarp where it would stay dry.
Kara swaggered around with her fists on her hips, and Felicity postured with her hands behind her back as they sized one another up.
The whole competition painted a better picture of the night when one of the participants knocked Lena up.
The alpha who had slipped inside her didn’t just have strength – they also had the stamina to keep going. Lena was pretty confident that she had narrowed it down to two potential alphas, but it was always better to get an official confirmation from the DNA.

Lena couldn’t hold in a cynical laugh at the obvious accusation in her neighbor’s voice. “Are you implying that I can’t handle that level of closeness with anyone? This isn’t about you, Kara. I’m comfortable in our arrangement. Maybe I’m entering my nesting phase. I looked around my house this morning and nothing looked right.”
She leaned into rudeness as a defense and decided not to overthink the offended look on Kara’s face. If nothing else, she needed to accomplish her goal and that meant gathering DNA from each of the women she suspected could be her pup’s sire.
Lena poured freshly squeezed lemonade into five glasses and handed them out. In exchange for the drinks, she stole a little something from each guest — hair from Sara’s clothes, and the blood from Beth’s splinters that she pried free with a tweezer.
Felicity’s DNA sample required some craftiness to collect. Lena had to go in for a hug to pluck a loose strand from Felicity’s ponytail.
“It’s so nice having you here,” Lena intoned and reached up to brush the hair out of Felicity’s face. “Living out in the country is peaceful, but I miss all of our friends from the city and the parties we used to have.”
“Yeah, your Halloween party was something else,” Sara remarked from across the room and glanced up and down Lena’s body in a way that made it clear she remembered her costume.
Lena halted and turned around to give Sara more of her focus. Out of all four of the options, Sara seemed like the least likely person to raw her across the desk in her office - but Lena couldn’t discount the burning lust in Sara’s eyes.
“It was certainly one wild night. Who did you come as again?” The question was light enough to seem innocent but the intensity in Lena’s stare was anything but that. She encroached on Sara’s space as the alpha slipped her hands into her back pockets and raised her chin to posture.
“I was a pirate. It felt fitting since I’m always on the lookout for some booty.” The smug answer wasn’t a turn-on, though Sara seemed clueless to that fact.
Lena recoiled faster than her libido as she recalled Sara dressed up in leather pants with a plastic sword strapped to her hip. She suppressed a shudder and swung her curious eyes to Beth, who volunteered the information without prompting.
“Alice.”
Beth’s succinct answer and manic smile inspired memories to flicker back to life for Lena. She could see the alpha in the character costume and she was immensely relieved that she hadn’t been the one to bang her six ways from Sunday.
That left Felicity, and she evaded Lena’s eye with a bashful smile. “Oh, you know me, I’m kind of a nerd.”
“Kind of?” Sara scoffed. “You gave me a telescope on my birthday. What the hell am I supposed to do with that?”
“Look at the stars?” Felicity asked with a perplexed crease forming on her forehead.
“Why would I do that when there are beautiful omegas to look at instead?” Sara pointed to Lena as an example, and everyone turned to ogle her like they were part of a hive-mind.
At the very least, their attention boosted Lena’s ego. She preened to soak it all up while she was still hot enough to receive it.
It dampened her mood to realize none of them would probably glance her way when she started to show. She took it out on Kara by grabbing the glass from her hand while she tried to take a sip.
Lemonade sloshed out of the glass and down Kara’s shirt, but Lena was too irritated to care as she rounded on all four of them. “We’re more than just our looks, you know. How would you feel if everyone treated you the way you treat omegas?”
“Whoa, hey, I didn’t mean it like that,” Sara back-tracked and held her hands up to playfully surrender before her remarks soured the atmosphere. “I appreciate everything about you.”
Lena released a slow breath and used her pheromones to smooth over the tension she created. “There are sandwiches in the fridge if any of you are hungry. I’ll be back in a minute.”
Leaving all four of them alone could spell disaster, but Lena needed to escape the bombardment of their musk and start running the tests. She used the saliva from Kara’s glass to swab her sample and began jotting down notes as she mixed each alpha’s DNA with the correct solution. She would match them against her own later, and then she would finally know which one of them was the culprit that got her pregnant.
Lena didn’t expect to emerge from the spare room and return to find the kitchen more crowded than when she left.
Along with all of the alphas, Sam sat at the table with both of her kids and Alex, and everyone was digging into the pile of sandwiches.
“What are you all doing here?” Lena asked with mistrust and headed over to squint at her best friend.
“I saw your Instagram post and I thought we could pitch in,” Sam chuckled into the piece of soft white bread she was holding. “I didn’t realize you had a lot of help already.” She glared around the table at all of the blondes and narrowed her eyes back at Lena.
Beth picked up the unwelcoming notes in Sam’s pheromones and scooted her chair back first. “We should start heading back to the city. There’s a storm warning for this afternoon and I have a meeting I can’t miss.”
“Maybe we can get together soon,” Felicity muttered and fixed her glasses for a final shy glance at Lena’s skirt.
Lena took the time to say her goodbyes, in part because it was the polite thing to do, but also because it would make her life easier if she needed to connect with Felicity for the sake of her pup.
Sara departed with her shoulders down and mimed “call me” to Lena before heading to her car.
Lena could feel the unspoken accusations when she returned to the kitchen. Sam’s face expressed disappointment and even a touch of anger. To avoid the inevitable conversation about her guests, Lena picked up a sandwich and took a large bite.
“Why don’t you and Kara take the girls out to feed the chickens?” Sam suggested to Alex when the tension in the room threatened to suffocate them.
Alex shared a wary look with her sister, but got up to herd the kids outside when she noticed the clench of Kara’s jaw. “Yup, on it. Last one to the coup has to spend the night there.”
Ruby and Emily squealed with laughter and Alex slung her arm over Kara’s shoulders to guide her out of the kitchen when it seemed like she wanted to linger.
They no sooner stepped outside when Sam turned to swipe the sandwich out of Lena’s hand with all the frustration of a mother used to dealing with stubborn children. “Lena, what the hell are you doing inviting three alphas here in front of Kara’s face? Have you forgotten the speech you gave us yesterday? It’s not like you to toy with someone’s feelings.”
“That’s not what I was doing, and Kara invited herself over in spite of me telling her not to come.” Lena shoved the plate of sandwiches out of Sam’s reach. “This isn’t what it looks like. I was conducting research.”
“On what, dick swinging?” Sam flung her arm up to swirl it through the invisible musk and choked on the dispersing lust. “It smells like a frat house in here, minus the booze.”
“Single alphas don’t show up anywhere without the right incentive, so if you want to judge me for that, then go right ahead.” Lena stood up to put distance between herself and her best friend, and peered out the window to where Kara chased her nieces around the yard.
A strange pang of longing hit Lena in the chest and she turned away from the window as Kara’s head snapped up to find her staring.
“Oh, I am judging you,” Sam stated with clear criticism and marched over to continue her interrogation. “What the hell were you thinking?”
“I’m pregnant, okay? It’s why I moved out here in the first place because I didn’t want the stress affecting the baby.”
The confession flew out of her mouth faster than she could consider the ramifications. Lena blamed her hormones for the outburst and immediately regretted it as she blinked at Sam’s stunned face.
“Since when?” Sam gasped, too taken aback to say anything else.
“Since I was stupid enough to sleep with an alpha at the Halloween party.” The bitterness of Lena’s words left a bad taste in her mouth and she gulped at some of the lemonade.
Sam softened immediately and dropped her rant as she enveloped Lena in a tight hug. “Oh, honey, why didn’t you tell me instead of dealing with this alone?”
“Because I wasn’t ready, and also because I haven’t been alone,” Lena pulled back to witness the realization light up Sam’s eyes.
“Kara knows?” Sam asked with an unfair amount of hurt in her voice.
Lena swallowed down her guilt and chose to be honest, even if it meant Sam’s feelings would be bruised. “She has for months, but I can’t handle getting closer to her under the circumstances. I thought if I could just get the most likely candidates in one place, I could figure out the identity of my pup’s sire before I start to show.”
Sam’s understanding narrowed her eyes and she rocked back on her heels as she came to a terribly accurate conclusion. “Kara doesn’t know that she might be the sire, does she?”
Panic flared through Lena’s chest and she lurched forward to clasp at Sam’s hand. “You can’t say a word, Sam. Not until I know for certain.”
Sam could be trusted with her secrets, but this one was more complicated because she was married to Alex. Lena didn’t want to ask her best friend to lie to her mate. Sticking out her bottom lip was a poor substitute for begging.
“Oh god, I’m a bad liar, Lena,” Sam reflected out loud and pulled a grimace so contorted that her eyes became a little crossed. “Alex knew it immediately when I put a dent in her truck. How am I going to lie to her face about something this big?”
“That’s why I didn’t tell you right away,” Lena admitted and looked down at her friend’s hand as it clenched in determination. “I thought it would be a burden to your conscience. You don’t need that in your life.”
Sam pursed her lips and shook her head in something like self-reproach. “No, I still wish you had come to me sooner. We would have figured this out by now, but there’s no sense in dwelling on it. We have to move forward. You have genuine feelings for Kara, right?”
Lena wasn’t expecting her friend to hit her with a question like that, but her heart easily provided her with the answer. “Of course I do.”
“Okay, if Alex asks me what we talked about, I won’t have to lie. I’ll just tell her we were discussing your relationship with Kara.” Sam brightened at her rational for fibbing and pulled Lena into another hug. “Listen, if Kara already knows about the pregnancy, I don’t think you have anything to lose. I can tell she’s invested in you. It won’t matter if the pup isn’t hers—”
Lena’s distress heightened as the back door swung open and for a precarious second everything went silent.
Sam clamped her lips together and Kara blinked owlishly at them until she strode forward with concern and a fair amount of agitation that tightened her jaw. “Lena, are you okay?”
The question felt accusatory with the way Kara was staring down at her, and Lena bristled accordingly. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“I don’t know. I just thought maybe you’re feeling off.” Kara lifted her hand and wobbled it to symbolize Lena’s fluctuating emotions. She seemed wooden in her movements, jerky and unnatural from the tension that ran through her tall frame.
Lena narrowed her eyes coldly and drew herself up to glare at Kara. “Because I didn’t immediately call you for assistance? It’s not healthy or reasonable to rely on one person exclusively for everything.”
“That’s not what I meant.” Kara sighed in frustration and crossed her arms to hunch over with her chin to her chest.
The impending fight between them was all the more awkward because of Sam’s presence. Though she at least had the decency to find an excuse to extract herself before she was caught in the middle of it.
“Oh, look at the time, I had better get the girls to the park,” Sam intoned shrilly. “Call me later.”
Lena barely glanced in Sam’s direction as she hurried out of the kitchen. She waited to ensure she was out of earshot and then put the blame on Kara’s shoulders. “Was it really necessary to cause a scene in front of our family?”
“Me?” Kara scoffed and released a bombardment of indignant pheromones to mask her hurt and anger. “You’re the one posting yourself all over Instagram. What did you think would happen when we saw that?”
“Oh, stop the act. You’re just jealous and you don’t know how to handle it.” Lena imitated the posturing that went on in her household throughout the morning. She attempted to make herself sound like Kara and paired her mimicry with a lot of hand gestures. “Let me just lift this sofa by myself. Then I’ll cut you enough firewood for the next year, so you’ll never have to invite another alpha over again—”
Kara no longer slouched, and she moved forward with surprising speed to cut off Lena’s rant. She leaned down in a way that could have been intimidating in another context, but her eyes were on Lena’s lips and she kissed her hard enough to melt the rage out of her.
“We might not be an official couple, but let me make this clear: I’m not sharing you with anyone else.” Kara nuzzled beneath her jaw to pucker against the soft pristine skin that quivered with Lena’s racing pulse.
Lena breathed raggedly and wondered why she had the urge to beg Kara to claim her and put an end to all of her uncertainty. Insane thoughts came to mind, but thankfully she kept them to herself.
The pup inside of me might not be yours, Kara, but the next one will be. And the one after that.
Kara pushed her towards the table and removed her skirt with one long zip. It fell away at Lena’s legs, and Kara tugged at the buttons on her blouse, parting it roughly and letting it flutter from her shoulders.
