Out of all possible career options to pursue after graduation, Kara had never dreamed the government would recruit her to become a secret agent. She took the application test by complete accident after wandering into the wrong room at an exam center. Most of her peers were taking the SATs that day, and Kara was confused by the tense atmosphere around her. She had already sat down and input all of her details into the computer by the time she realized her mistake.
Four years later, Kara was living in a house with three other fellow agents. Their Director Miss Grant called her a “true embodiment of L.E.S.B. greatness.”
The acronym stood for Leadership. Excellence. Stamina. Bravery.
Kara knew she had a lot of stamina, and that she was brave enough to dive headfirst into danger, but she didn’t see herself as a leader or someone who excelled above the rest.
It surprised her when Miss Grant presented her with a file on super villain Lena Luthor and put her in charge of a mission to bring their enemy to heel.
“We ran your profile through a database of other files, Karla, and based on the outcome, you’re the best person for the job.”
Fellow L.E.S.B. Alex scoffed at the heap of files on the desk behind Miss Grant. “What database was that? These files belong to all of the dead L.E.S.B. agents that took on Lena Luthor.”
“But they lived longer than the others,” Miss Grant intoned and shoved Kara’s mission paperwork into her hands. “That’s a success by our current standards. Lena Luthor has eluded us for going on six years. Nearly a decade.”
“If you’re rounding way up,” Sam quipped from where she was lounging next to the window. “What was the actual criteria behind selecting Kara?”
Eve stood up to get a closer gander at the stack of agent photos. “It looks like they’re all blondes.”
Miss Grant sniffed as though offended anyone would assume her decision-making came down to physical trait. “We used a highly sophisticated algorithm to make this determination. Besides, Kiara’s written several detailed reports about Lena Luthor.” She unfolded a pair of glasses and cleared her throat to read from one of them.
“Her raven-dark hair, her piercing green eyes – Lena Luthor is mysterious and almost mythical. A thing of Irish lore and legend. Any time I hear news of her, it’s like finding out that unicorns are real and running around free in the wilderness.”
Alex snorted at the reverential phrases dedicated to the super villain. “Good job, Kara. That’s the most homosexual description I’ve ever heard.”
Kara blushed at her teammate's open mockery of her and clutched tighter to the file that went over the particulars of her mission. “I accept full responsibility for bringing Lena Luthor in. When do we head out?”
“This afternoon,” Miss Grant declared and passed out all of the relevant information to the team. “There’s an event taking place in Kosovo this weekend.”
“Which part of France is that?” Eve asked with a wide-eyed blink of confusion.
“Kosovo is a country rich in exploitable minerals and gems,” Miss Grant pressed on, as if not even remotely surprised by the agent’s poor knowledge of geography. “Our intel says that Lena Luthor will be there to steal resources and sell them to other buyers.”
“So, we’re going to intercept a transaction?” Sam questioned as she glanced over the basic write-up in front of her.
“Keira will pose as one of the buyers and the rest of you will provide back up,” Miss Grant clarified and peered at Kara over the rims of her glasses. “If all goes according to plan, we’ll reconvene in 48 hours, and Lena Luthor will be made to account for her international crimes.”
Kara nodded along in agreement with a heavy sense of duty in her chest. She gathered herself together and reviewed all of the documents to prep for the mission.
Two hours later, she boarded a plane departing for Kosovo with the strangest premonition that her life was about to change.
While the rest of the L.E.S.B. agents fell asleep, Kara watched the clouds race by. She also looked at various candid photos of Lena Luthor that their intel sources had collected from over the years.
“Gosh, you’re incredible.” Kara marveled at the sight of Lena mid-negotiation and forgot to breathe long enough to choke and gasp.
She couldn’t tell if it was all of her hacking or the fact that she voiced her thoughts out loud that woke everyone else up. Not knowing what to do, she faked sleep with her glasses crooked on her face and Lena’s photos pressed to her chest.
A while later, they touched down in Kosovo to cool temperatures and snow-capped hills in the distance. The L.E.S.B team changed into clothes that would help them blend in and wheeled their luggage through the private airport.
Alex took it upon herself to give Kara another run-down of the plan: “This is how we set our trap: Eve is going to remotely tap into the security cameras and talk to you in your earpiece. She’s going to have eyes on Lena Luthor at all times. I’ll be on the floor posing as another buyer and scoping out the scene. Sam will escort you and pretend to be your bodyguard, but she’ll fall back as soon as you’re in position. Your goal is to get Lena Luthor alone to discuss a transaction. Once you do, you’re going to subdue her with a blow-dart and we’ll remove her from the premises through the east exit.”
Kara licked her lips and nodded sharply in determination to get the job done. On paper, the set up sounded easy and like something she could pull off without hiccups. The one problem was that she didn’t foresee how awkwardly she would behave in front of the Lena Luthor.
“Who are you exactly?” Lena Luthor asked, paralyzing her with a red and vixenish smile that awakened some dormant part of Kara’s sexuality.
Dressed in a three-piece navy suit, Lena struck a balance between professional and smoking hot.

“As a matter of fact, yes. I’m actually a representative of the Lee family. I understand you’re looking to make a deal.” Kara squinted at her own ineptitude in covering her backstory and followed Lena Luthor, who only paused to snatch two drinks from a passing waiter’s tray.
“Right this way,” Lena directed as two men opened a set of double doors to let them through.
Despite not being on her own turf, Lena had a luxurious set up waiting on her. She handed a glass of champagne to Kara and settled onto a low couch that completed her bad-guy vibe. Kara didn’t sit right away. She needed Lena to motion to the seat next to her before she made a move.
“You don’t seem like the usual type that attends these things,” Lena reflected out loud, sizing her up and sliding closer to tuck a strand of blonde hair behind her ear. “You’re also not a representative of the Lee family. Linda and I go way back. Let’s just say we spent a lot of time together.”
Kara was still hung-up on the fact that Lena touched her and didn’t register that Lena was holding her earpiece until it was too late.
“Who are you really?” Lena demanded and grabbed her by the chin to look her dead in the eye. “Are you with Interpol? The CIA? MI5?”
Under normal circumstances, Kara could spin a persuasive lie, especially about her job and her identity. She had extensive training about what to do when her cover was blown, and none of it came in handy because of her bizarre crush on her enemy. It should have bothered her more that she was instantly attracted to one of the world’s most-wanted criminals. But she was aroused, in awe and silent.
“N-no, I—none of those—”
“You’re a LESB, aren’t you?” Lena guessed, pinning her with a look and raised eyebrow. “Christ, why does your director keep sending me little blondes that have no idea what they’re doing? The last three put themselves in mortal jeopardy and there was nothing I could do to help them.”
“Help them?” Kara blurted out stupidly, finally remembering her mission and the fact that other lives were lost. “You killed them, and that’s why I’m here. To bring you to justice.”
She removed her tranquilizing blow-dart from its hiding spot in her boot and took out both guards in the private room. The dart would have felt like nothing more than a bee sting, and they clutched their necks as they dropped. Kara’s reflexes were fast enough that she could have taken Lena out, but she hesitated after seeing the look on Lena’s face. Not guilty, not combative, just stunned and a little impressed.
“I don’t kill people, but they do have an unfortunate habit of dying around me.” Lena pressed her bright red lips together in sympathy and gestured to her guards. “They’re going to wake up from that, right?”
“It’s a light sedative,” Kara explained, lifting the blow dart helplessly as she tried to work out whether or not to follow through with her plan. She could have already gotten Lena to the exit point if she wanted, but she had more questions and for some reason the enemy was volunteering answers.
“I’m not the villain everyone thinks I am. I’m here because some very bad people are going to buy weapons with jewels. Will I steal from those people? You’re damn right I will.” Lena stood up and postured, unafraid of the chance of capture.
It took Kara just a moment too long to realize that her drink was also laced with something that made her eyes feel heavier.
“Is anyone else here with you, Kara?” Lena asked, turning the tables on her without effort. “Tell me, and I’ll make sure you get back to them safely. I don’t want another LESB agent to turn up dead. This meeting is too dangerous for any of you.”
“You drugged me. How? I had my eyes on you the whole time.” Kara couldn’t fight the drowsy sensation of gravity working on her eyelids.
“Sometimes, you have to look at a person harder,” Lena whispered and stroked the side of her face as she slumped downward on the couch. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep you safe.”
Kara slipped off into a void of sleep and woke with drool crusted on her face to Alex shaking her.
“Kara, are you okay? We have to get out of here. Now. Our intel was wrong. Something seems off. This is whole place is swarming with heads of state and corporate leaders. It’s like Silicon Valley’s summer camp for billionaires out there.”
That didn’t sit right with Kara, given all that Lena Luthor claimed about bad people purchasing weapons. She shook her head groggily and forced herself upright. “Give me another shot, Alex. We were so close.”
“No,” Alex hoarsely insisted, swiping her hair out of her eyes as she pulled a gun from inside her belt just in case. “Sam and Eve are already waiting for us. Eve managed to get her hands on some sensitive information, and if we pull out now, we can plan better for the next opportunity—"
“I want to make the most of this one. You should go.” Kara glanced around in search of the best exit.
She knew that Alex could make a clean get-away after assessing the room. They had a sister-like bond and she didn’t want to ruin that. Her next moves were probably insane, but she saw her opportunity to create mayhem and force Alex to listen to her.
There was a glass box containing equipment in case of a fire, and she rammed her elbow right through it to set off the alarm.
Alex sensed what she was going to do and couldn’t prevent it from happening.
Kara out-classed her fellow agents in terms of physical stamina and running speed, and no one could stop her from running off. Not even Alex.
“I’ll be fine!” Kara shouted with the knowledge that her fellow agents would have to flee without her.
The jarring sounds of the alarm scattered people in all directions. Body guards shielded important figures while they rammed their way through the crowds and confusion misted the air along with thick droplets of water that began to spray out of the sprinklers above.
Kara was smart enough to snag someone’s card as she ran past them, and then she clocked Lena Luthor lifting a briefcase to slink off through a side door.
Kara bolted towards it, and bounced off of someone in the process, who dropped some heavy looking equipment. She didn’t have time to get a proper look and hurried to use the scanner on the side door to catch up with Lena.
It went against protocol to chase enemies into unknown territory, except Kara wasn’t certain that Lena Luthor was the real bad guy here.
She couldn’t explain her gut instinct any more than she could explain why she didn’t feel threatened running down a metal staircase to follow the sounds of Lena’s heels through a series of hallways.
“Gosh, this place is like a maze,” Kara grunted after her near collision with a wall when she took a corner too fast.
The echo of Lena’s footsteps was hard to follow, and Kara veered left, then right, and right again with a backwards glance over her shoulder.
She slammed into Lena with a gasp, and swung her arm up to point her blow-dart right at the super villain. “You’re under arrest.”
“Am I?” Lena scoffed, blocking Kara’s attack with the briefcase. She snatched the blow-dart right out of her grasp.
“Seriously?” Kara hissed, her indignation lifting Lena’s shoulders in a casual shrug.
“It’s nothing personal,” Lena insisted as she stuck the dart in Kara’s neck while the sound of feet stomping down the hallways drew nearer.
Kara’s team appeared just in time to see her pass out, and Lena’s henchman gathered her into his arms while Lena postured in victory. “If you don’t want to end up like her, you’ll let me leave. The choice is yours.”
That was the last thing Kara heard, and the next time she opened her eyes, it was to a whole different set of surroundings. She stirred awake on a comfortable bed and looked around at the modern decor until it all shifted into focus.
Not far away, Lena Luthor sat at a large table covered in a delicious breakfast spread. She buttered a thick slice of sourdough without bothering to react to Kara padding over.
“Where did you take me?” Kara asked, bewildered by the comforting environment where she was free to move around.
The bottom of a pit would have been a more probable location for an international criminal to dump a spy. This place not only seemed like Lena’s home, but her bedroom.
“I promised to keep you safe, didn’t I?” Lena smirked and eyed her up and down in amusement. “Did you know you talk in your sleep? You’re quite the rambler.”
Kara cringed at the prospect of babbling without a filter while someone as beautiful as Lena listened to her. “Yeah, I know, it’s been a habit since I was a kid. Why did you capture me? Didn’t you say you’d turn me over to my fellow agents?”
“Capture you? Wait, those others were part of your team?” Lena sighed and dropped her butter knife in a clatter. “I thought they were with someone else. I’m sorry I snatched you away, but maybe you could use a few days to unwind away from the rush of it all. I certainly can.”
Lena swept her hand in offering to anything on the table, and Kara resented the audible rumble of her stomach that confirmed her hunger. It would go against LESB policy to dine with the enemy, even if the enemy was a gorgeous mastermind with fresh croissants and artisan coffee.
“No, I can’t just eat breakfast and chill with you here.” Kara pressed her lips together in a mortified grimace and tried again with a stern expression. “You have to take me back. They’re going to think I’m dead!”
“Sending you off on an empty stomach isn’t very hospitable. Do you really want to return to your organization empty handed when you could take important intel back with you?” Lena raised a solitary eyebrow and lifted a grape to pop it between her lips in obvious expectation for Kara to join her at the table.
“Are you trying to levy your knowledge about what was taking place so I’ll eat with you? Why?” Kara hesitated out of ingrained loyalty and remained guarded as she eyed up the scrumptious food.
Lena looked just as delectable in another three-piece suit, and Kara subtly smoothed one hand down her crinkled shirt.
“Maybe I’m tired of being seen as the ultimate villain and this is my chance to set the record straight. I’m not as bad as you guys try to make me out to be. Ask me anything,” Lena proposed with a slow and knowing smirk while waiting for Kara to finally take a seat.
Kara hesitated until the scent of the baked goods overwhelmed her. She fidgeted for just a second more before lunging for a giant blueberry muffin. Stuffing most of it into her mouth wasn’t the most elegant move, but she was famished.
“Wuh-whut-were-ye-doing today—"
“Maybe wait to interrogate me until after you completely swallow that,” Lena admonished and filled the space between them with pheromones.

Sure, gems are valuable, but these days, a lot of high net worth individuals are behind the scenes manipulating politics for their own ends. They have money. What they want is ultimate power.”
Kara never trusted anyone she interrogated in the past, but she could tell Lena wasn’t lying to her, which put her in a strange predicament. “How are you any different, considering the work you do? You seem to live above the law.”
Lena scoffed and spread cream and jam onto a thick scone. “The law isn’t always right. Sometimes it’s the enemy of the people. Often it protects the status quo in harmful ways and benefits only the rich. That’s why I do what I do.”
It wasn’t every day that Kara discovered her target was someone with morals, who meddled in politics and underhanded business dealings all for a higher purpose. She munched on a buttery croissant with the foolish notion that she could fall in love with Lena for taking on that cause.
“You expect me to believe you have the world’s best interests at heart?” Kara asked.
Lena reacted to that wording with drawn-together brows that spoke of frustration.
Kara cut her off before she could express it. “Because I do, I actually believe you.”
Lena’s demeanor shifted in an instant as a grin spread over her face. “That’s a relief. Because I get a good feeling about you. If I can change your organization’s mind about me, maybe I’ll be able to watch my back just a little bit less.”
“It must not be easy,” Kara acknowledged as she reached for eggs and bacon and more than one spoonful of fancy herb potatoes. “At least you seem to be set up here pretty well.”
“I was born into money. Just so you know, I don’t keep much from my work.” Lena grabbed an item that seemed like a clutch purse but made a hissing sound as she opened it. “I donate as much as possible to charity and I use the rest to develop my own gadgets.”
Kara watched the clutch purse unfold itself into a weird security computer that reacted to skin contact.
“This is a sensitive piece of machinery I use often. I thought you would like to see that you’re perfectly safe with me. We’re at my home in Brussels.”
All Kara knew was that the device provided a security map of the place, and the implication was clear that she could leave on her own terms.
Kara couldn’t allow herself to be lulled into the sense of security that Lena was giving her and tried to press on with her interrogation. “Do you have names of the people trying to buy and sell plutonium?”
“I can’t give everything away all at once,” Lena countered, and set her scone aside as she eyed Kara with an interested smirk. “Trust has to be built, and there’s no guarantee that your agency won’t try to pin it all on me as the easier target.”
Kara couldn’t fault that and found herself averting her eyes once or twice as the air in the room thickened. It must have been the adrenaline of dining with the enemy that was making her skin heat up. The sooner she left, the better. “Where are my comms and my gear?”
The change in subject must have come as a shock because Lena blinked in surprise before she narrowed her eyes playfully and steepled her fingers on top of the table. “Are you hoping for the chance to blow dart me, Kara?”
The casual curiosity seemed flirtatious and Kara inadvertently thought of something other than her weapon that her lips might pucker around. “N-no, I’d be kicked out of LESB if I–”
