I have done no research on this, but: You mentioned that Japanese cartoon burgers don't use cheese, and I faintly recall that in Asia, lactose intolerance is much higher than in Europe, or something like that. That might be the reason?

One thing I've gotten really tired of as I've been revisiting Pokémon via these reviews is the inconsistent moralizing from the characters. This case being Ash's first fight against Skiploom being treated as him going too far when it was no different from any other battle. Not helped by the fact that the scene goes nowhere as it's forgotten immediately and has no bearing on the rest of the episode.
