Suede's Pokémon Journey, Episode 209
🕑 Added 2024-08-30 02:36:17 +0000 UTCWe've finally reached the end of the month, and with a whimper, FINALLY, the end of the season! Yes, this is the last episode of Johto League Champions, with Master Quest finally on the horizon! The Top And Bottom 5 will be next month, as will hopefully be the Calamity June Review.
Now that we've finally been able to move in to a new place, things should start to pick up a little, but I know how often I've said that so we'll just have to see. I have one other small video and two commentaries coming up, but there will also be a new strategy going into September so let's find out if it works!

Maybe the reason Noctowl wasn't used in the battle was because Noctowl was already essential in the last gym battle with Morty.

Its one of the reasons I always thought that Gen II was more like an expansion to Gen I, while other generations tend to be more self contained. It probably stems from not knowing how they should handle a new generation. Pokemon was massively popular and just throwing out the Gen I pokemon like other shows do when the new line of Toys gets released could have killed the franchise, so they played it a little too conservatively.

I'd speculate the writers were concerned about facing backlash from fans for Ash "giving away all his Pokemon" (ie: the starters, which were admittedly popular and iconic characters) to clear room for potential Johto 'mons and attempted to phase them out more gradually as a kind of compromise. I'm unsure about the specifics, but maybe viewers in Japan responded negatively to Charizard being released early in the saga and, with Squirtle's departure already too far into production to axe, awkwardly left Bulbasaur on Ash's roster to placate concerned longtime fans?

This is why Ash started dumping his entire team after each region.

It's both groanworthy and amusing to me that not only does Ash entirely neglect to even consider using Noctowl strategically (presumably on account of it being ontologically frozen into the role of designated TR balloon-popper) but refers to Bayleef as "my grass-type" as if it's the sole example of this type on his current team...and then Brock describes Bayleef as Ash's "only choice" in this context. I acknowledge that Bulbasaur's virtually a once-every-15-episodes guest role at this stage in Johto, but I think this is one of the first times the writing staff have overtly (albeit probably unwittingly) forgotten his presence to the point of unintentionally erasing him from existence rather than simply neglecting to feature him.

Oh, an episode released on my birthday. Yippee!

As a collector of Shiny Pokémon, Ash not using his one and only shiny really stings me. Also the first time I heard the beeps in the episode, I actually thought my headphones were on low power. Heh.

I think it's safe to say that Master Quest will pick things up considerably.

It's not just the gym leaders. Only 4 out of the 28 gym trainers in Gold/Silver/Crystal are packing Johto mons. (5/30 if you count the two that were added to Jasmine's gym in HG/SS but couldn't be battled there, having been battled at the lighthouse.) One at Bugsy's, two at Whitney's, one at Pryce's.

At least Noctowl got to have a Gym Victory. I think Totodile's only Gym battle was against Whitney where I don't think it scored a single KO (I forget who took out her other Pokemon in the first match).

Oh wow, the end of the season. Kind of surreal to be here, but there's still more Johto to get through. Looking forward to the recaps

Hey, don’t diss Bayleef! Noctowl had his glory in a gym, gotta let her have a moment to be the MVP! Joking aside, I have my doubts Noctowl would be able to handle Machoke. Bayleef has that muscle none of the other team have. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if they wanted the MVP of the manly gym to be the obviously female pokemon. Not confirmed by any sources, but I would not say no.

Really been looking forward to this! Let's go!

So... Rachael Lillis?
