Here in the UK every episode of Buffy was shown twice in the same evening. An edited version was shown early so that it would be suitable for younger viewers and then the full version was shown later for a more mature audience. I suspect that Jer's source was unaware of that and anyone reading it will think that all the episodes were censored.

Could not agree more. This is bad writing, plain and simple. Spike didn't need to do this to have his character impetus STILL go where it goes. He felt bad enough already, and this scene never fails to piss me off. It is totally OOC for Spike to do this to Buffy. He's never ever established as being this type of "evil", even when he was at his worst.
