Mafia III DE on Steam - Update: All issues with the Steam version of the game should be resolved in release 2.1.2 (attached to the bottom of this post)! To check that you have the latest version, hover your mouse on the dxgi.dll file in the game folder: it must be at least version 2.1.2.2596. If you get a lower version number, please download the attached zip, extract it confirming that you want to overwrite existing files, and then run RealConfig.bat again.
Quick setup: same as previous versions. Install Mafia III: Definitive Edition and run it at least once, to make it generate the folders for your user profile. Quit the game, then locate the directory containing "mafia3definitiveedition.exe" (for example, I have the Epic Games Store version and my directory is "C:\Program Files\Epic Games\MafiaIIIDE") and extract the mod to that directory without changing the folder structure in any way; finally run RealConfig.bat, which should take care of the rest and finish without errors.
The next time you launch the game, it will run in VR. Once again I modded the custom square resolutions directly into the game, so it will start with 2160x2160 and you'll be able to customize that to your liking in the display options menu. Remember that for WMR headsets like the Reverb G2 you need to select the OpenXR renderer from the mod overlay, otherwise due to a bug in the SteamVR driver for WMR you'll get a black screen in VR.
Game options: Most can be tweaked at will, but mind the following display settings (which are automatically tuned by RealConfig.bat) because they are required for a good VR experience:
- DISPLAY> RESOLUTION must be selected among the square ones
- DISPLAY> FPS must be <Unlimited>
- DISPLAY> DEPTH OF FIELD, FULLSCREEN, VSYNC and MOTION BLUR must all be OFF
- DISPLAY> ANTIALIASING must be LOW (higher values only blur the image even more)
Additionally, to get the maximum area for the HUD which is already pretty cluttered in this game, you will want to extend:
- DISPLAY> SCREEN BORDERS to cover the whole screen
If you use my first person on-foot camera:
- GAME> ON-FOOT FOLLOW CAMERA must be OFF
and if you use a gamepad, which is highly recommended for all my mods:
- CONTROLS> AIM ASSIST must be OFF (this can also be selected when starting a new game)
Point of view: just like I did with the remake of the original Mafia (which shares a lot of engine code with Mafia III), I modded the game to implement a first-person camera, both for driving vehicles and when on foot. The 1st person driving camera can be chosen dynamically using the normal keyboard/gamepad bindings, as it replaces the useless hood camera. The on-foot camera instead must be selected from RealConfig.bat before launching the game. The operation can be repeated as many times as you wish without extracting the zip file again, however, if you want to experiment with both choices.
I would like to remember old users (and to inform new Patrons) that my mod provides a control system that makes setting up the perfect driving position when you switch car models a breeze. YouTubers in particular haven't seemed to catch up on it yet. I will probably need to make an in-game tutorial for the function to make it more discoverable. If only each day had 240 hours :-P
When you enter a vehicle, if the camera position looks wrong, tap the D-Pad Up button on your gamepad, which will bring you into a special "camera setup" mode. Use the left thumbstick to move the camera left/right and up/down, and the right thumbstick to move it forward/backward. You can also reset it to the default position by pressing the left thumbstick. Any other button or trigger will exit the camera setup mode and return control to the game.
So, the typical drill when stealing (ahem, "acquiring") a new vehicle will be: enter the car/truck/boat; if the position does not look right, briefly tap D-Pad Up and move the camera with the two thumbsticks to your satisfaction; then accelerate away. The whole process only takes a couple of seconds once you've gotten the hang of it!
The camera setup can also be (ab)used to generate special camera positions that are not supported by the game itself, like a bumper cam or a bird's eye view. Just keep working the levers until the camera is at the place you want it :-D
VR conversion: everything should be working correctly, at least as far as it's possible with a mod. Gameplay is fluid, and combat (which is a fundamental part of the series) feels very natural, even when shooting from cover. As a matter of fact, I find that in VR I tend to play in a much stealthier and more deliberate way, which makes the missions a lot more interesting than they were in 2D! The crosshair is placed at the correct depth, as always with my mods, and the character points and shoots where you're looking.
Cutscenes have been fully fixed (FOV, camera, etc.), although as usual freeing the camera and widening the FOV reveals lots of broken animations, characters freezing or disappearing, missing props, misplaced objects, etc. Some cutscenes are prerendered and thus will appear in 2D on a virtual screen.
One big problem people had with this game when it first came out was the artistic choice for the color palette. It's very muted and drab, and I share the common opinion that it kills enjoyment. It might be more realistic, sure, but why go to the length of modeling a huge world full of beauty and then bury it under a thick layer of dullness? So, RealConfig automatically installs an excellent mod that restores the colors to their original glory. All credit for that goes to SlowpokeVG.
Hey, enough with the tease. What is the big surprise? Cheers to The Merote for guessing correctly in the comments to my previous post! There's a major improvement in this version that will allow you limitless freedom in customizing your image quality, not only for Mafia III but for all past and future games: ReShade presets are now fully supported and working in VR!!! I will probably make a dedicated post in the future, but for now you just need to mind a couple of things.
My modding framework, as you know and can read about in the "Legal" tab of the overlay, is based on the wonderful ReShade injector by Crosire. Initially I had to disable its built-in effect system, however, because it would operate on the backbuffer drawn on the display monitor instead of on the images sent to the VR headset. That means that when using the effects you would have paid the GPU performance cost only to make the image on the monitor better, with no visible improvement in VR.
Now I've made the many changes needed to have the effect system work directly on the VR images. What prompted me to finally take this step is that Mafia III is a blurfest. Even with antialiasing set to low (it cannot be turned off completely, because modern games), and even after I modded everything I could in order to remove the plethora of post-processing blurring steps that the game intentionally adds (seriously, developers, what is wrong with you?), the image quality was still unacceptable in VR and it begged for a sharpening pass.
So, when installing the mod for Mafia III: DE, RealConfig will now automatically drop in a CAS (AMD FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening) shader. By default it's tuned to quite a strong setting, with a Sharpening intensity of 4.0. You can tweak the setting at the bottom of the new "ReShade" tab if you feel it's too much.
If you're already familiar with ReShade, you will find all the controls you know in the usual places, except that the "Home" overlay tab is now called "ReShade" and that I slightly rearranged the "Overlay" tab to make it less intimidating for users who are only interested in the VR settings.
Important: do NOT run another copy of ReShade to implement further effects. If you know what you're doing and want to add more shaders or presets, just drop them into the existing folders. As a matter of fact, having another copy of ReShade hooking the game, especially for RDR2, is one of the most frequent issues that can kill your fps in VR and for which I receive lots of support requests.
Performance: If the game doesn't feel as smooth as you'd like in the headset, please try tweaking the "GPU Throttling" slider in the "MDE3" overlay tab. Dragging the slider toward the left will give more GPU priority to the game, which will increase your fps but might cause the VR compositor to hiccup and begin skipping frames. Moving the slider to the right will give more GPU priority to the VR runtime, which might hurt your game frame rate a little but could result in a more fluid experience. YMMV: each system has its own peculiarities and you might need to experiment a little. Different games might also need different settings.
Throttling is especially important if you want to capture or stream video, because then you introduce yet another competitor for GPU resources: the video encoding process. Move the slider to the right until you get a perfectly fluid mirror window. If even 100 is not enough (it might depend on the system load imposed by encoding and capturing), I also put in an additional slider which adds a custom amount of delay in milliseconds to each frame; it will really kill your fps in the headset but it should allow for perfect capture. Please give me some feedback on this if you can, as I'm always looking for ways to improve game capture by YouTubers and streamers.
HUD: Especially when you're on foot but not engaged in combat, the radar (minimap) and info box in the lower right and lower left corners of the HUD can be quite distracting and/or get in the way of what you want to see. Unfortunately Mafia III does not provide any way to toggle the visual information on/off, so I modded the HUD and exposed the gamepad shortcut [D-Pad Left + Back/Select] for hiding the radar and info boxes.
Additionally, Mafia III comes with its own special, extra-annoying HUD item: the objective marker. It gives the distance from your target inside a white diamond, and it's positively HUGE and most of the time smack in front of your view. There is no option to turn it off from the game menus (what were they thinking?!?), so I implemented that option in the mod: you can find it in the "MDE3" tab, and it's selected by default because in my opinion the target marker totally kills immersion. It's also kind of useless, since the game already provides GPS routing and turn-by-turn signals directly on street corners.
Game bugs: One thing I'm sadly becoming quite used to is having to fix miscellaneous bugs that make it hard or impossible to properly enjoy the games in VR, and Mafia III is no exception. One particular gripe that I have is with AAA games that seem to forget option settings from previous runs: I mean, how hard can it be to save all options to disk and restore them when the game is restarted? Mafia III does it with subtitles: each time you launch the game, subtitles are automatically turned off. That is particularly aggravating when you start a new game, or if the game loads directly into a cutscene, because Mafia III "helpfully" hides access to the option menus when a cutscene is playing.
So, in the "MDE3" tab of my mod overlay you will find a checkbox that you can use to force subtitles on. If you're not a native speaker, you'll want to select it even before starting a new game, to be able to see the subtitles in the super-long initial cutscene which is quite fundamental for setting the story.
Mafia II DE: I made some improvements to the mod, especially as regards the DLCs, so you might want to update to the new release even if you're not playing Mafia III at the moment.

Can anybody tell me how to access the overlay tab? The post says that I can try to adjust the perfomance in a MDE3 tab, but how do I access it? I have a weird ghosting effect when moving my head around. I tried everything and it's not going anywhere even on lowest resolution.

Is there anyway to change individual settings instead of ultra everything or high everything? I really don't care about most of the settings, but would like to enable ultra textures and have the rest of the settings set to medium. Usually when I play games I tweak the settings to my liking. Thanks for all your work, really amazing stuff. Bought RDR 2 last night for $5 (Slickdeals has a post with info on how to do this.) But have been wanting to try out your mod for months now. Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing what I am while playing RDR2. Anytime I try to open the overlay (right and left trigger) the game crashes and opens Steam VR. I dont own the game on Steam, but on epic launcher. Also, whenever I try to change any settings within the game, it crashes and brings me back to steamvr. Tried to turn off HDR while playing, and it crashes. Also, whenever starting the game now, Rockstar launcher says unknown files detected within game directory, which can result in account being banned and locked. I feel like this mod is cool, but the patreon needs to be setup differently...makes around 10k a month off Patreons, needs to be setup by game. v2.1.3 is newest version for RDR2, but in the post for it, doesn't mention the game once. I think it would be better if you had current instructions for each game. Are you not able to toggle individual settings within RDR2? Because I cant change anything in the game or overlay without crashing and going to steam VR, guess I'm stuck with U,H,M,L? Some clear instructions would be very appreciated on the details like this. Using Virtual desktop streamer on a oculus quest 2.
Is there a way to disable the sharpening, as quest for example has built in method that runs on Headset itself (so probably better performance) ?

So today I wanted to Finally dive into RDR, when i realised, that my workaround for the Break key does not work, when RDR2 is active. The only keyboard I have access to is a 60% one, hence no Break Key. First I tried to makro the key directly on my keyboard, Redragon RDK530, with no avail. So I found a tool to superimpose a layer to customise keys directly. But no luck as well. Is there a file where the menu key is changable? Love, Lorenz

Hi Luke - I'm having trouble with something I believe is a bug. When having a bow or knifes (or similar weapon type) out, then everytime after stopping to walk or run, the camera will recentre on where I was looking with the headset. While walking/running, I can look around, but once the stick goes back into central position, camera always turn to where I was looking for some reason, and only with aforementioned weapons. I do no have 1st mode beta enabled from your 'pause' interface. Any idea what might be the issue ?

Hey Luke, I'm using this to play RDR2 VR and it works but the resolution is too low and blurry for me. Is there anyway I can custom change it in the XML file without the game crashing ? I'm running it on a 3080 and I used the medium preset. Then I changed the 1080x1080 to 2160x2160 but the game sets it to 2160x1440 and it turns into as slideshow before crashing. Any suggestions?

Hi Luke, I'm having a bit of an issue. I played the mod at release and I don't remember it being so jittery/ghosty/doubling of image type of thing, while moving (not right stick turning with gamepad, just left stick moving forward/backwards etc). Everything is smooth while turning head in VR but while moving with the gamepad forward say, the environment is noticeably jittery. I had the realconfig at High, then downgraded most things to medium just to get a stable 80-90fps throughout see if it would improve but not much. I don't really that that issue with the GTAV mod. Computer is latest Gen 3080 & 5800x and had no issue last time around. I am wondering if there is any way to smooth out the aforementioned ? or is it simply due to the doubling of frame for VR ? Otherwise all is great, thanks for the mod :) it is just the jitter while moving that makes it a bit unpleasant. Thanks in advance. note: It is a clean install, new game. dlss off, resolution scale as set by the .bat at 5/2 and stereo.

I just started playing Mafia 3 a couple of days ago with my Quest 2 and was having loads of issues with the game crashing. Couldn't play more than 15 or 20 minutes before the game would crash. I verified files a couple of times and the game would still eventually have the same issues again. I was using Air Link and then decided to try it with wired link. Was able to play for about 2 hours with no issues. I'll have to play some more to be sure, but it seems like there must have been issues using Air Link with the game. Just a heads up for anyone else who may be having issues with the game on their Quest 2. One thing though is that I'm still having issues with the car radio stuttering a lot. Don't know if anyone else is experiencing that.

Hey Luke, trying to get M3DE to work but am having an issue. I dropped everything in the game folder as instructed but when I try and run realconfig, the console comes up but then instantly closes. Not sure if it's supposed to do that now or not but I figure not. So without that can't seem to get anywhere, not really sure what I'm missing. This is on Steam with just regular StreamVR. Yeah somethings going on here. I don't have dxgi.dll in my game folder, nor is it in the download for v2.1.3. Little bit lost here
I'm sure this mod is absolutely amazing, I just can't seem to get Mafia III or RDR2 to launch in my headset. I installed it per the guide above, and the game does launch on desktop showing me the option to open the mod menu, it just doesn't start in my headset. Feeling kinda sad rn, was hoping this to be an easy install but what ever really is, right? Any help would be appreciated.

Is there anything that can be done to brighten the crosshairs in Mafia 3? Its so dim at times im having to move it to a dark background when ive completely lost it then judge from that and guide it while it turns very dim in most places.

Right click the game in your steam library then its Manage>Browse Local Files, this should open up exactly where the mod files need to be dropped, Run RealConfig bat and youre good to go.

I hate when you dive peacefully, and some gans start shooting at you, and the police arrives and purchase you and ignores the other people shootung at you. Even if they are in the payroll of the mafia, they should behave diferently. In general the police spawn is too exagerated, because they didn't want to make a good police AI ... it's sad they didn't improve that in 5 years, since the rest if things of he game are top notch.

How do I get into first person when driving in M3? On foot it works fine, but as soon as I enter the car it's third person. 1st person is checked in the mod menu. Also using offsets does nothing. Tried every controller button, checked mapping ingame. Can't get 1st person view working in M3, or can you only drive in third person? Had a clean install of M3 so I don't know if there was something that screwed the camera.

The HUD is supposed to move around when you shoot (it becomes headlocked, just like in all my other mods). What do you mean "to not having a reticle and HUD"? When your gun is drawn the reticle should always be visible, although for some weapons it's pretty dim and depending on the background can be hard to see

shooting in first person varies from having a aiming reticle and HUD to not having a reticle and HUD. Also, the HUD moves around with the aiming reticle.

What a wonderfull game Mafia 3 is, and in VR even better. The problem is they forced everyone to play emergent secondary missions to unlock the story missions, and I don't mind because eve if they are optional, I'll do those missions, but some people don't want that, or don't have too much time ...

Sliding the gpu throttling to the right works a treat for me. Nice and smooth when turning. Where sliding to the left was a jittery experience when turning. Will have to try this on the other games :)

So I bought M3 (at a discount yay), everything checks out, my fps is around 80 on res 21xx, but if I don't install the first person mod, My gun sight is doubled when I aim somehow. Should I change something in the config? Also, Is it like this for everyone, shadows looks strange, like black dots, or is it maybe too much sharpness, i don't know, not a big issue. But the weapon sight kinda big issue for me. I'm using a Q2 on Oculus rendering (not steam). EDIT: I gave the 3rd person another try (I switched to 1st Person Mod before because of the aiming issue I had) by replacing tables.sds from sds retail(RealRepo) to the game, and now I seem to have 3rd person aiming working right. Maybe just needed a restart. So everything's peachypeach. Thank you.

I have to completely delete Mafia 3 and reinstall it, completely shot it does not start in 2d and not even in normal anymore :-(

I know right?I was tempted to buy in on Epic also but I saw 29.99 just for the base game....I have the Steam version but as you know,it's only showing up in 2D

You mean the game? Mine didnt even look like it started, so I've deleted the whole folder and I'm reinstalling from Steam again in the hope that it works from a fresh.

I am aswell, both with the option checked and unchecked. I am also looking for a solution and will let you know if I find one. Did you get past the start menu with 'new game' and 'continue' by chance? I didn't and am wondering if that is what's causing issues,

Hi Luke, I have the Epic version, using a G2 Reverb and OpenXR. The fps is poor compared to Mafia 1, 2 and RDR2. In those I get around 60-70fps, in Mafia 3 I get 30fps right from the start. That is even with a 2160x2160 resolution. Also when I open the options menu in game, I get black in VR, the options screen only appears on my desktop. I used to have the same issue with Mafia 1 but that was fixed when I switched to OpenXR, but now this issue remains in OpenXR :-/ Edit - I PM'ed Luke but for anyone havnig the same issue - when I turn off the reshade option everything appears in VR and my fps jumps from 30fps to 75fps

I also have the Steam version and only a flat screen. But Luke is working on a fix so wait. I even checked out the Epic version, but they still want 29.99 :-(

Because others here are throwing out suggestions, Here's some ideas; I think Control and Alan Wake remastered (Just for the story and experience, it's really dark and scary in bits, they both would be great in VR (Epic gave away Control not long ago and Amazon Prime are actually giving it away now so I imagine most people now have it, it also has good DLSS and raytracing but it's a very fast paced game with lots of things going on).

I've been playing in 2D a bit and I can imagine this game will be really immersive in VR, graphics are pretty decent as well, look forward to a fix for Steam version, Steam always letting the side down :(. Anyway next up Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Remaster right Luke?? ;) (I can dream can't I)

Yeah i have the steam version , i guess no point posting logs seeing as the problem has been identified, guess im waiting till the end of the day to stream :( was really looking forward to this but i know Luke is doing his best right now to get the problem fixed so sit tight guys we waited so long for this whats another day eh ? Unfortunately it's not possible, because the older game engine doesn't implement a function to hide the main character :-(

Thanks to people who posted their logs! The problems some of you are having are caused by unexpected differences between the Steam and Epic versions of the game. I put up a warning at the beginning of the post, and hope to have this sorted out by the end of the day

Very much looking forward to this but I am getting this in a window in VR. I checked and "Use desktop game theatre" is switched OFF in Steam. Anyone having same issue? I am on WMR. I am also with either a black screen in open xr flat 2D screen in steam VR. I have gotten all the other REAL mods to work but this one is acting up.

Yes, except for Mafia II which is only 1st person when driving. If you can use your steering wheel/shifter with the 2D game, it will also work in VR

Are you already at the part where you get control of your character? The initial cutscene is very long and prerendered, so it displays on a 2D virtual screen

Thanks! Exactly, there are third-party presets that you can drop in and tweak. Of course each shader that you add to the game contributes to the performance cost, but usually you only lose a few fps
