🕑 Added 2021-08-25 20:19:29 +0000 UTCHey guys, hope you're all having a nice summer! I know it's quite hard to stay positive in such trying times, with this pandemic that never seems to abate, but when everything feels like it's just too much to handle we can at least take some solace in VR :-)
It's been almost a couple of weeks since my latest post, so I wanted to give you a quick pulse of where things stand. As those of you who have been following me from the beginning know, the new VR modding framework that I created for Red Dead Redemption 2 initially only supported Vulkan. It's true that I had made two other separate mods in the past, for NOLF2 and GTA V, but the NOLF2 mod was a custom job built around the LithTech engine, while the GTA V one was based on 3Dmigoto which is rapidly becoming obsolete and will probably never be updated to support DX12 or Vulkan.
So, since I want my mods to cover all three graphics APIs, for the past month or so I have been hard at work to improve and extend my new tools in order to support the VR conversion of DX11- and DX12-based games too. The job is not finished yet (I'm positive there's a proverb somewhere that says a modder's job is never done!) but I have to say that I'm quite satisfied about the state of things.
In, ahem, totally unrelated news, the Mafia Trilogy is on sale these days for 45% off, both on the Epic Games Store for a couple of days yet and from Humble Bundle. Hypothetically, if a friendly neighborhood modder man wanted to test his new framework on DX11, he might choose a relatively simple and well-behaved game like Mafia: Definitive Edition, which not only is the remake of a great classic, but also has the advantage that it uses the same engine as the two other games in the collection (Mafia II: DE and Mafia III:DE), so hopefully some of the conversion work can be shared across them to provide a total of about 50-100 hours of new VR enjoyment for you.

Hi! Due to a bug in the SteamVR driver for WMR that has been outstanding for many months, with WMR headsets like the Reverb G2 you need to use OpenXR. Select the OpenXR renderer from the "R.E.A.L. VR" tab in the mod overlay; the mod will save and remember your choice for the next runs. If you still have jitters after that, get the OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality from the Microsoft Store, and use them to check that your active OpenXR runtime is set to WMR (if it's set to SteamVR, tracking might still not work correctly). Then, in the developer settings page of the tools, you should make sure that Custom render scale is set to 100% and that Motion reprojection is Disabled.
stuttering when move ... look around: the same with me. I tried all resolutions, checked Motion Smoothing is off and no background VRapps running. (HP G2, GTX1080Ti Extreme, Ryzen 3700x, M:DE)

That's not normal. Nothing in the mod itself can cause spikes of latency when you turn around with the stick. I remembered that one user of my GTA V mod had a similar problem, so I dug through the old issues and found it: https://github.com/LukeRoss00/gta5-real-mod/issues/349 Unfortunately he never got to the bottom of it (at least while we were discussing the matter), so it makes for an interesting read but there is no easy solution. The first thing you'll want to do is make sure that all SteamVR options are to their defaults, apart from Motion Smoothing that must be off, and that external programs (like fpsVR for example) are not interfering.
its spikes when I turn. And the frame rate is 50-60fps.
Are you using something like fpsVR to check the fps or the mods overlay? Programs like fpsVR don't give an accurate fps measurement for RDR2.
I get stuttering when I move using the mouse or gamepad analogue stick to look around. It's so daunting and makes things unbearable to look at. Is there a way to fix this? I'm using RTX 3070 and a HTC Vive. I get 80-90 fps, mostly a solid 90fps, but still stuttering when turning and looking. I tried on High setting and Medium setting and same frames with same stuttering.

I'm getting some weird texture bug where some textures are missing on the ground and if I walk over to them I fall through the world, anyone else getting this? Not sure if R* did another game breaking update, I have the latest script hook but that's from July.

I assume you already turned off the VR theatre thing in the Steam options? Are you launching the game from Big Picture by any chance?

Finished Rdr2 and what an amazing experience it was in VR. I justed dusted off my PS3 and started with Rdr1, been so long ago that I played it that I forgot most of the story. Was a bit shocked at first how clunky everything is compared to Rdr2 :)

Hope its ok to post but resident evil 2 and 3 remakes are getting vr mods as well. Its a good time to be a vr gamer :)

I know that Pimax headsets have some issues, but unfortunately they are too niche for a single developer like me to support. Last year I even contacted Pimax to see if they wanted to cooperate to make my GTA V mod work correctly on their hardware, and Kevin Henderson said that he would send me a test unit. Then nothing came of it, as with most of Pimax initiatives ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The only thing you can do at the moment is activate parallel projection. I'm aware of the performance hit, but if they want their specialized hardware to work at its best they should be cooperating with developers.

Mafia:DE would be on my top 3 games of 2020 if I played flat games, I guess Vavra would aprouve it XD 2 & 3 weren't as good as the original, but I liked them. I wonder if the "friendly neighborhood modder" will enable first person ... :-O

I remember playing Mafia 2 using Nvidia 3d glasses. At the time it was just wow worthy. Getting to experience it in VR? "Humble Bundle? Shut up and take my money!"

I've not long replayed Mafia2 and Mafia DE. Tried with vorpx but couldn't really get it going well enough. Would love to do them in VR proper!!

This is great news! After playing through RDR2, I tried to pick up Vorpx to play other games in VR, but after using your mods, Vorpx is totally unplayable (seems to have favored quantity vs. quality). I am curious if the friendly neighborhood modder would mod the Far Cry series at some point in time. They are old enough that they could run great performance-wise. They are also pretty mainstream like RDR2 and GTAV.

Yes please to Mafia 1st person VR
I'm playing GTA V mostly in 3rd person (shooting in 1st person only) using Luke's VR support and couldn't play without it. VR makes 3rd person a lot more enjoyable, let alone easier with the extra "looking around" peripheral view. I couldn't win a single street car race in GTA V at 2D in 3rd person view, but VR made it a breeze. Mafia series in VR would be great.

Third person can be great in VR too, just think of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice! And in more unrelated news, Mafia: DE has a first person mod :-)
