Release 2.2.5 (not supporting Cyberpunk 2077 yet)
🕑 Added 2022-01-31 00:52:36 +0000 UTCDear friends, as you saw from the post title, I have mixed news for you :-/
I know that you want the bad news first, so here goes: despite my best efforts, the new CP2077 mod isn't ready yet. I made good progress for a while, but then I got completely stuck for days, trying to sort out the HUD. I might have found a workable solution now, but I still need to implement and test it; also, the game is huge and very complex, so other issues are almost guaranteed to crop up.
As a result of that, I'm going to completely miss the self-imposed January deadline that I was hoping to meet. However, in the meantime I have made many improvements to the framework, regarding both quality-of-life and headset compatibility, so the good news is that I still have a fresh release for you with many of the things that you asked for :-)
For new users
The zip file attached at the bottom of this post is the one you want to download. It implements all the VR conversions in this Patreon: Red Dead Redemption 2, Mafia: Definitive Edition, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, Mafia III: Definitive Edition and now Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Please note that each game will require a separate installation. For RDR2 there is also a PDF attached below with instructions; for the other games, refer to this post for general setup and configuration directions, and if needed to the specific posts covering each game to obtain more detailed information.
For Patrons who are already playing my mods
This release brings the following improvements:
- Fixed a small issue with Horizon: Zero Dawn that could lead to abnormally long loading times when first starting the game in VR.
- Added a much-requested gamepad gesture to toggle from 1st person view to 3rd person and vice versa in Horizon: Zero Dawn. To switch the camera, just press both thumbsticks at the same time when the game is paused (the gesture is not active during normal gameplay, to avoid accidentally triggering focus mode which is bound to the right thumbstick click). So, the gamepad combo is: Start button to pause the game, click both thumbsticks together, then Start again to resume.
- Implemented the new camera rotation compensation (i.e., perfectly smooth turning with the right stick or mouse) for Mafia: DE, Mafia II: DE and Mafia III:DE. So now all the Patreon games support flicker-free camera turning! Remember however that the VR runtime can only perfectly compensate one rigid rotation at a time, so if for example your character has the gun drawn, you can choose to have the scenery turning smoothly and the gun ghosting, or the other way around, but you cannot have both.
- Added automatic detection code for WMR headsets like the Reverb G2: the mod will now warn you if you're trying to use a WMR device with SteamVR (a configuration that doesn't support alternate eye rendering correctly), and after asking your permission it will automatically take steps to fix the problem. This should make it much easier for WMR users (which are constantly growing in number) to enjoy my mods and have the same tracking quality as with the Quest 2 or the Index.
- Improved aiming and crosshair management with Mono rendering (there should no longer be circumstances in which the crosshairs appear misaligned or double). Your feedback is welcome as always!
- Also much requested: all games now support headsets with canted displays, like the Reverb G2 (very small angle, about 1 degree), the Valve Index in "raw" mode (5 degrees), up to the huge cant of Pimax headsets (10 degrees). This should solve all problems with misaligned/double crosshairs, and it will provide correct rendering for scopes, binoculars, photo-mode cameras, etc. without the need for parallel projections. On the Index for example, there is a 17% performance improvement to be gained by enabling raw projections!
- Automatic detection of the headset type and characteristics, with support information displayed both on the mod overlay and in the logs; automatic disabling of Mono mode when a VR driver is detected that cannot render it properly (usually because of a combination of canted displays and mangling of independent eye poses).
- Automatic switch to a virtual 2D display when the headset displays are canted and the camera zooms in (e.g., with scopes and binoculars). This is because zooming in VR can only work with parallel cameras: canted projections will inevitably lead to a double image that the brain cannot reconcile.
- If desired, the automatic switch to a virtual 2D display can also be forced for traditional headsets with a single display or parallel projections, by selecting the new checkbox "Force virtual screen when zooming" in the mod overlay. Some users will find this mode easier on the eyes.
- New countermeasures added to RDR2 to avoid software like Twitch Studio killing the performance in VR and/or causing tracking issues.
- Improved the mod logs to automatically diagnose frequent problems and to more easily find interfering applications/overlays. The logs will now automatically provide the list of dll's injected into the game without the need to use external analyzers.
- Fixed a hard-to-reproduce bug with RDR2 running on AMD video cards, where the game would draw an incomplete crosshair, and that in turn would prevent my HUD from becoming headlocked during combat.
- Updated OpenVR support to the latest official version supplied by Valve.
- Preliminary support for Pimax headsets. This is quite a long story. As some of you already know, people at Pimax have been so kind as to provide me with a test unit, which I have put to good use this month. I have found several issues, which unfortunately I can remedy only in part from my side. I'm already in talks with their engineers however, and during the next few months (if they manage to carve out some time) I should be able to work with them to fix the remaining problems and bring the experience on par with other major headsets, or even better!
For the moment, apart from the support for canted displays already described in detail above, I have added a workaround that should alleviate the transparency problems with the HUD (no more gray square around the RDR2 crosshair, yay!) and I did all that I could in order to reduce the synchronization problems.
Despite those efforts though, Pimax headsets still suffer from serious performance and rendering issues with my mods, and they don't support Mono mode or AER correctly, so in all honesty I can only recommend using Small FOV for now, until their technical department can spare some time to look into the matter. Even with small FOV, don't expect the same performance that you can get from other headsets; I made a full benchmark with H:ZD, and where on the Quest 2 or Index I get 90-100 fps, with the same PC and in the exact same conditions on the 8KX (Small FOV) I get 55-75 fps, and with definitely worse image quality.
I hope that you'll enjoy this new release, and again I'm very, very sorry about Cyberpunk 2077 slipping to February, but as you know for me quality always comes first!

Can't you modify mod so that you can move following head and recenter with a command? Mafia DE is the best of Mafias; it's a pity to play it in this way! Dear Luke Ross, you did not follow this game as GTA and others!
LukeRoss
I'm so sorry Ken, yesterday I was replying to many different messages and I got you mixed up with another Patron, so I gave you a totally misleading answer. In Mafia: DE and Mafia III: DE, movement is head-based only during combat. During normal strolling you can look around and your direction of movement is not influenced.
Ken Knutson
I'm playing Mafia DE 1 and its great except, I don't move in the direction I am gazing. I have to use the Left stick to rotate the world around me, then push the Right stick forward. Luke says you should move in the direction your are gazing, when you press thumbstick forward. Anyone else have this issue and/or know a solution?
WIG
Yes you just need to remove a dll file that you installed (or rename it). It is all covered in read me but off the top of my head I think it is the dxgi.dll or similar. Double check the read me for specifics.
Hi, sorry if this is a dumb question, but is there a way to switch back to playing flat screen after installing this mod?
Cercata
Mine was only 10GB, and for the rest of steam users seems to be the same
WIG
Mystery 60gb update ??? https://youtu.be/sgWXI3-ZbeY
Cercata
What do you mean by save ? On Steam, there is a way to download old versions, in case the MOD releases for 1.31
Christian
Hey Luke, Cyberpunk 2077 is now on sale with a 50% discount on steam. Is it save to buy it now? i only want to play it in vr.
LukeRoss
As I just wrote in the thread above yours, I'm still evaluating the impact of the 1.5 game patch. I have installed the new version side-by-side and I'm working on comparing the two and migrating my changes; unfortunately it's very slow and painful work which cannot be done automatically. For the moment though I haven't found anything too scary :-D
Christian
Hey Luke, Can you give us an estimation when the new mod is coming out?
WIG
Patch 1.5, not read the patch notes yet but big ol' download. Hmm hopefully Luke's work is don't impacted
Cercata
It's live the update
Cercata
It's official, there is a 47.5GB update on Steam now
Hoshi82
Rumors have it 1.5 might release tomorrow. If someone is on the GOG version, you can disable autoupdates. If they keep it as usual you also have might have the option to reverse back to an older version. Have disabled autoupdate since January. :)
LukeRoss
O_O Just in case, backup your current installation of the game. I'm currently working on modding version 1.31, and depending on how much they change things around, it might take me some time to release a new version of the mod supporting 1.5
Cercata
1.5 comming today ? https://twitter.com/CyberpunkGame/status/1493238791666028554

Has anyone tryed the gestures on the VorpX mod ? I sound like wiimotes ... BTW, someone has to make a guide on how to unistall that MOD XD
LukeRoss
Unfortunately that's only possible with Mafia I and III, not for Mafia II. Details are here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/57546037
Tamás Kiss
Sorry a quick question regarding Mafia II. Can I play it in FPS constantly? I rather not play it in TP and I only seem to have a driver FP and no "on foot" FP cam set. Thanks!
LukeRoss
Thank you Brandon, I will try to do that! <3
Brandon(Post Maester)
Luke!! after CP2077 is done, you really should take a couple weeks off and play God of War man. Its pretty amazing! I am playing it using superdepth3d on 4k using dlss and it looks fantastic. I don't think VR would improve my experience much honestly, being able to see the interactions between father and son adds a lot to this game. Don't wait, just take some time and enjoy it!!
Kprime23
Fully agreed David, VORPX is not in the same league as Luke's mod, which looks almost as if Rockstar had implemented it themselves!
LukeRoss
I wish there was a way to pin your comment! Since Patreon doesn't provide it, with your permission I would like to repost your guide (giving you full credit of course) and start a performance-related post where Patrons can swap settings and ideas, what do you think?
Mr. BLid
To you AMD users with older cards. I have gotten my average FPS in VR for RDR2 from 42-44 to 58-60 using the mentioned settings below. My system: Radeon 5700XT (GPU) Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.60Ghz (CPU) 16GB ram I am playing with a Quest 2 via Link Cable. Settings in RDR2: I moved the Quality Preset Level slider to: favor performance, the notch just before balanced. I then changed texture detail to ultra and TAA to high as Luke Ross recomends. TAA sharpening about 30%. Settings in the REALVR mod for RDR2: Buffering set to single (gave me 80-90 ms latency, while dual buffering gave me 90-100ms latency) Stereo AER GPU throttling: 3 Resolution is set to 2430x2430 Oculus settings: After testing 72hz,80hz and 90hz while benchmarking I found that I get the highest FPS count as well as the overall smoothest experience with 90hz enabled. I also have the Oculus Debug Tool open and disable ASW. Other tweaks and settings: I also downloaded an FSR mod (AMD's answer to DLSS) from: https://github.com/fholger/vrperfkit In the vrperfkit script I set renderScale to: 0.95, and sharpness to: 0.95. I played around with different values and found that 0.95 was a sweet spot for my system, giving me an extra 5-7 FPS. Other than that I also applied a soft overclock to my GPU folowing these guides: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mgEzl1QvgU (overclocking performance guide) https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=rx+5700+xt+max+temp (max temp for my GPU) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fN3n63laxEA&t=675s (overclocking general guide) I hope this helps you. The game runs very smoothly for me now, even if it looks a little blurry. It took me the whole weekend finding these settings. I can not afford a new graphics card with the prices on them currently, even a 3070 costs around 1000 dollars here in Norway, and I love RDR2 and really wanted to play it in VR. With these settings even fist fights in first person feel playable. Before I made these changes just walking in Valentine felt so jittery that I almost got sick from it lol. These settings also seem to greatly reduce the number of crashes for me in the game.
David Schell
Thx anyway Ross for your work! I had my problems with converting the old configs, but the batch file helps me to create a new onw....I also use vorpx and your mod is just an other league. So sad Rockstar Games give you no permanent employment :D
LukeRoss
VERY interesting, Nick! Thank you so much!! What is the performance impact on your system of forcing 4x antialiasing in the driver, have you measured it?
LukeRoss
THANK YOU dreamking! I do care about all the little details, although it makes for slow progress :-|
LukeRoss
Thank you so much!! I'm overjoyed, seeing so many people happy with the results of what I try to do []-) CP2077 is indeed very frustrating, but I'm going to tame it yet
LukeRoss
Hi Gramsci! To the best of my knowledge, there's no such thing as "my eyes can't see the AER properly". The most likely explanation is that your frame rate is too low for a good experience. Could you give us your system specs? Also, if you activate "Show FPS" and "Show latency" in the mod overlay, what are your readings?
LukeRoss
That's totally awesome! I don't have access to a Varjo Aero, but I'm really happy that the mod works correctly with it []-D
Nick Brimble
For anyone playing RDR2 to look nice in a lower resolution for example I am using 2430x2430. I have found that Increasing antialiasing settings as much as possible in Nvidia Control Panel clears the image up quite a bit. My settings are: FXAA: On Gamma correction: On Antialiasing Mode: Enhance the application Antialiasing setting: 4x Antialiasing Transparency: 8x (supersample) Background Application Max Frame Rate: Off CUDA: All Low Latency Mode: Ultra Max Frame Rate: Off Multi-Frame Sampled AA (MFAA): On OpenGL rendering GPU: NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3070 Power Management mode: Prefer Maximum performance Preferred refresh rate: Highest available Texture filtering - Anistropic sample optimisation: Off Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias: Allow Texture filtering - Quality: High performance Texture filtering - Trilinear optimisation: On Threaded optimization: Auto Triple buffering: Off Vertical sync: Off Virtual Reality pre rendered frames: 1 In RDR2 I start off with the low setting option in the Realconfig then adjust my settings once I have started RDR2. I found with changing RDR2 Settings this must be done before loading into story mode otherwise it crashes on my system. RDR2 Settings: Anistropic Filtering: 16X Far volumetric resolution: Ultra Far shadow Quality: Medium Full Resolution screen space Ambient Occlusion: Off Fur Quality: Medium FXAA: Off DLSS: Quality Geometry level of detail: 0.95 Global illumination Quality: High Grass level of detail: 1.75 Grass Shadows: medium Lighting Quality: Ultra MSAA: Off Near Volumetric Resolution: Low Parallax Occlusion Mapping Quality: Low Particle Quality: Low Reflection MSAA: Off Reflection Quality: Low Screen Space Ambient Occlusion: Ultra Shadow Quality: High Soft Shadows: Medium Tessellation Quality: Ultra Tree Quality: medium Tree Tessellation: Off Unlocked Volumetric Raymarch Resolution: Off Volumetric Lighting Quality: Ultra Water Physics Quality: 1 Water Quality: Low Water Reflection Quality: Low Water Refraction Quality: Low My System is: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700KF CPU @ 3.80GHz 3.79 GHz RAM: 32GB GPU: RTX 3070 HMD: Oculus Quest 2 using Link cable in 72Hz mode I am running a basic overclock profile in MSI afterburner (lots of good tutorials on YouTube.) Other than that I experiment with some setting every now and then to try and get better fps and image quality. Hopefully this info can help some other users to optimise their game.
dreamking
I was playing RDR2 for a second time and I realized that the camera’s elevation angle was stabilized (camera not moving up or down with mouse unless you are aiming). It was making the VR experience such comfortable. It is details like these that makes your mods so good and playable (compared to other options). Luke, please take any time you need to create another masterpiece. No rush with CP. You have our my support.
Mr. BLid
I do not know where to post this, but I was wondering if anyone else is using an rx 5700 xt for RDR2 and have some tips for settings to make it run well? I have been playing around with the settings, but never get a latency below 90ms. It works fine for just exploring the world for shorter periods, but is too choppy when I play for longer periods. What are your settings when using AMD cards for the REALVR mod for RDR2?
The Merote
Luke this update is amazing, these games are starting to feel more like official ports than a mod, the Hud is great the options are better than what you would get in a VR game built from the ground up. I can finally play RDR2 with a GTX 1080 very comfortably with the VR screen resize option, still looks better than most VR games setting it to 1890X1890. These Triple AAA devs should consider hiring you for VR seated experience added to there games. The gun aiming is much improved as well. I am loving the HUD distance option, I set it to far. Amazing work my friend, hope CP is going well and not too frustrating.
Gramsci
Hello you may have answered this before but are you planning on making any mods with Direct 3D or Non-AER 3D as my eyes can't see the AER properly and has made everything unplayable for me
Cercata
I tried and no way, they explicitly try to block mods to avoid cheaters
Y. Kin Cheung
I just got my Varjo Aero yesterday and I tried it with HZ:D. It is absolutely amazing! Before that, I was using Quest 2. The improvement in the whole experience is unbelievable
Hi luke i was wondering if there is anyway to get your gta v real mod working with FiveM ive looked everywhere and cant find ayone covering it any help would be appreciated :)
LukeRoss
Thank you John!
John Dam
no more parallel projections nice work really great that you took the effort to fix this Thanks!!
After several trials and errors, Rdr2 constantly freezes, either the vr mod ceased to work or the game itself ceased to work, what kind of countermeasure should I take? What setting should I change to in the anti-freeze tab in the mod overlay?
The Merote
Well done Luke and thanks for the updates, No rush with Cyberpunk, I was going to say is Witcher on the horizon? but I just realised CP is not on the same engine as Witcher 3. I wonder which engines work best with REAL injected, would love to see you tackle some AnvilNext games. I'd imagine they would look amazing with REAL.
LukeRoss
Thanks Collin! When upgrading the mod for any game, you just need to unzip (overwriting old files, remember not to move anything around) and run RealConfig, nothing else
Collin Drennen
When upgrading from Release 2.2.4 to 2.2.5 (for HZ:D, specifically), do I need to play it in flatscreen first (like for my first time installation), or can I just copy over the existing files/folders, and jump straight into VR? Also, best of luck as you continue work on Cyberpunk 2077.
Cercata
Hitman in VR is awesome, I wish Luke would have time to play it
LukeRoss
Multiplayer is usually a problem because dll injection rubs the anticheat the wrong way
LukeRoss
Have you checked the Troubleshooting post? https://www.patreon.com/posts/troubleshooting-51552016
LukeRoss
Thanks Nicky!!!
Nicky Butler
Camera compensation makes mafia 3 realy smooth now. Big improvement. :)
Mine wont load I do the bat have permissions set and it loads RDR2 black screen than closes out.
Kprime23
Hi Grayson, You need to go to R.E.A.L. menu when in-game and in the game sub-menu you have this option. It is called "Camera Rotation Compensation", try checking and uncheking it to see which is your preference. I believe it is checked by default (world does not stutter, only weapon). This is the preferred method for first-person For third person it is best the other way around
Cazanu
OMG neverming i just turned on DLSS to quality and uped the res to 3500x3500 and DLSS sharpness in the mod menu to the max and it looks amazing, its literally like doubling the resolution for some reason i now can see extremely far away and its totally playable fps wise, how i could forget about dlss fml.
Andre Warringa
Haven't tested this update yet, too busy with Hitman VR atm, but all these features souns great. Thanks for keeping updating this :)
Olivier Home
Hi, could you made a MMO / Multiplayer VR Mod or you are limited with reshade ? Tired of crappy VR MMO... :)
I cant find it now, but I had read that either the camera turning can be smooth OR the first person weapon visual can be smooth, but not both. This update makes Mafia 3 much better, but when I turn the camera it is still a bit jittery but my weapon is perfectly rendered. Is there an option to change the focus to the camera instead of the weapon?
Cazanu
pimax update excellent,no more cross eye shadows etc,do you think https://github.com/fholger/vrperfkit is compatible with your mods?i would like some more sharpening in red dead 2 and it will be perfect.
Cercata
January has been a very good month for VR, with Hitman, Zenith & Wanderer, so no rush, cook it slowly, it will be tastier !!
JBOX
Thanks luke Cheers dude dont worry you will crack it we have faith in you 👍
LukeRoss
If the game looks sharp only when it's paused, it's usually because you accidentally enabled motion blur :-)
LetsPlayGoodGames
Hey Luke, PIMAX User here :) I updated the mod to the newest version (just unziped and replaced existing files in HZD) and disabled parallel projections. Now, the image doesnt look like an overlapping of 4 images anymore, but still very fuzzy. However 1) The menus are crystal clear and 2) when I pause, the fuzziness completely disappears and I have the nicest and most beutiful view I ever got. My question here is, is that still a pimax issue, or do I need to do sth. else to get it working - pc power should not be a problem with a 6900 XT i think :) Best regards and keep up the good work (:
LukeRoss
Done
can you return my patreon money? i bought sub just because want to play rdr2 on pimax and it works very awful!
Cazanu
hey man your 8kx doesnt flicker with 60hz?mine does for some weird reason 75hz is ok
LukeRoss
I hope so too, but just in case, backup all the things!
LukeRoss
Unfortunately it won't: my GTA V mod was built on a older framework, and it needs to be ported to the current one to reap the benefits!
John Zigmont
Thanks for the update
Cercata
I hope the Cyberpunk big update comming doesn't change many of the internals of the game ...
Kprime23
Luke, your talent and your dedication does not stop surprising. Your mod is already the best thing in VR by far, and it will only get better!!! Thanks a lot for all your hard work, your talent and your vision!!!
william mumford
Just tried out Horizon and RDR2 with my Pimax 8KX and the experience is definitely much better now that parallel projections is not needed. I'm running my 8KX in 60hz mode and turning with the joystick feels even smoother than it does with my Quest 2. I look forward to the further improvements that you mentioned which will need help from Pimax's side, because the mods are already very playable now. Thanks for the update!
zer0int
Finally I had the time to start playing this thing I bookmarked from a few months ago (RDR2), and I was delighted to see that what I had read back then - "even an RTX3090 will beg for mercy" - no longer seems to be the case, runs smooth as silk! ...And then I quit RDR2 just to see this update, and it even mentions Cyberpunk2077 VR. So I figured I'd just say "THANK YOU very much!" for your work; I really like the fact that it's such a hassle-free install, nice overlay interface, and everything -- seriously, solid work, and much appreciated! :-) Though I get what they say about motion sickness. I'm damn lucky I am immune to that, so I get a laugh from the cinematics in which I am hiding in some tree like a darn creep, haha. Cheers!! \m/
Michael DePalma
thanks for the candor! good luck on Cyberpunk, i'm sure it'll be great when it's ready. One question: will this updated real mod version work with GTAV and bring all of the quality of life improvements, including the smoother rotation, to that game?
Gaz252
It really is astonishing when working so rigorously on the new mod that you still can find the time to bring us all these QoL improvements. As always Thank You so much Luke.
Timmaye
Thanks for the update!
WIG
Nice one, thanks for the update quest 2 user so I will probably hold off downloading until next version as everything is running fine for me with last version. Glad to hear that you may have a work around.
Sebastianos Ionnides
You are awesome. Thanks for everything.
Jarrod Matheson
In your debt as always. Any job offers yet from IOI Interactive? 😄
