It's coming!
🕑 Added 2022-02-20 15:30:22 +0000 UTC[WARNING: a few NPCs were harmed in the making of this video. It's a hard job, but somebody's gotta do it.]
Update: the game is on sale right now, 50% off!!!
Update 2: we're on PC Gamer! VR ain't dead yet!!!
Dear VR lovers, stock up on pizzas and remember to stay hydrated, because in a few days you'll never want to remove your headset again []-)
Before you scroll down searching for the attachment: this is not the release post yet. Just a short teaser of what's to come very soon now. I still want to polish a few rough spots here and there, and some missions need more testing, but as you can see from the video we're getting R.E.A.L. close (ahem). No matter how things turn out, at this point I'm going to release by the end of next week. I hope that everything will work correctly by then, but even if it doesn't, most of the game will be playable in VR.
The video has no commentary, as it's basically just meant to be a tech demo. I tried to showcase as many aspects of the VR conversion as I could in the space of a few minutes, so please forgive the general nonsensical nature of the footage. Some key points:
- Unexpectedly, performance is quite good for such a complex and modern game. I shot the video on a Core i9-9900K and RTX 3090, playing at native 2700x2700 resolution, and recording to SSD on the same PC at 2160p 60 fps. While not recording, I'm usually able to maintain 80-90 fps.
- Speaking of performance, I find that the best way to enjoy this title in VR is to keep most graphics options on low with no DLSS. The clarity and level of detail you can achieve in this way are simply astounding. Every combination of settings will work with the mod, even raytracing on Ultra with all the bells and whistles, but my (very subjective) opinion is that moving to higher presets, despite looking very good on screenshots, actually makes for a hazier view in VR (and of course going overboard will kill your fps).
- The views are just majestic. Hats off to the designers. Free roaming around Night City gives me strong GTA V vibes, but with next-gen graphics and much more "verticality" to the city. This really needs to be seen in the headset! A video cannot do it justice properly.
- Every HUD-based interaction works as it's supposed to. In the teaser I demonstrate reading and replying to messages (which can be done with the world still visible and in full roomscale 3D), talking to NPCs, browsing the menus and navigating the map. Although it's not shown in this video, terminals you find in the game can be interacted with properly, all while never leaving the 3D world, either with your mouse or your gamepad.
- Each HUD marker is anchored at its correct position in the world: objective trackers, floating icons, even overhead subtitles (er, supertitles?). Although it's of course not appreciable in a 2D video, the crosshair is at the correct depth and lies exactly on the object you're aiming at.
- Zooming in (an important aspect of gameplay for this title) works correctly even in VR. I showcase it in the video, both for normal view and in scanning mode. For people who can't stand the world warping that comes from zooming in while wearing a headset, I also provide an optional virtual-screen mode that activates automatically when zooming.
- Special camera effects (distortions, heat haze, superimposed digital artefacts, etc.) all work properly and in correct stereoscopic 3D.
- Head bobbing is enabled in the video (I always like to keep it on, even in VR!) but it can be disabled in the game options.
- Driving feels very good, despite the sometimes weird physics. All driving cameras work properly: far 3rd person, near 3rd, and most importantly first person. You can freely look around at every moment and always keep complete situational awareness. The car interiors are beautifully designed and full of details, even more so than in GTA V.
- While driving I also demonstrate the recentering gesture, at 1:50 and 3:52.
- On foot: for this game I was able to fully implement head-based locomotion. You will be able to turn either with your gamepad stick (smooth turning) or simply by looking in the direction you want to go. The final release will have the option to switch this behavior on and off, for those who prefer to look around freely while they're walking or running.
- As usual for my mods, aiming always follows your gaze, and both crosshair and ADS modes are supported, with the sights perfectly aligned with your dominant eye. See this at 2:58.
- Photo mode is working perfectly in VR, and it's great fun :-D You can move around in 3D with no restrictions and look at the scene from every angle.
- Not shown in the video (if I find the time I'll do another one next week specifically for this): Braindance fully works, and it's a wonder all in itself! It this were your usual title made for VR, Braindance mode alone would justify full price for the game IMO.
- As you can witness from the teaser, all of the above is working with the 1.5 giga-update. I'm as yet still on the first 1.5 official release; I temporarily blocked the subsequent mysterious update, but have no reason to think it should be a problem when I get around to integrating it. In VR on my PC I was unable to measure any performance reduction from 1.31 to 1.5, although other people on the web did, so YMMV.
- Finally, what's up with this Diego Coronado guy that seems to be following me around the city? See him at 2:00 and again at 4:50! Virtual espionage? O_o

Hi de Sany, welcome! You're commenting on a very old post, please make sure that you have the latest release of the mod (here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/hotfix-for-60-72685916). It is perfectly possible to play standing up, as the mod offers roomscale 6DOF tracking. As for motion controllers, I chose not to implement them in my conversions. My reasoning is explained here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/52202067 and also here in more detail: https://www.patreon.com/posts/65366526. The best way to play my mods is with a traditional gamepad (Xbox and PS5 controllers for instance work very well).
de Sany
Hi all, I have just installed cyberpunk 2077 and the MOD looks great but I have two little questions: 1) How do I have to deal with controllers ? (I have a vive pro but when the game starts, I cannot select anything with my controllers), 2) it is possible to play using standup posture ?
Hoshi82
Never felt the lack of motion controllers a "step backward" if they aren't fully tracked with moving hands ingame. Games that are intendet with to play with gamepad or M/K are as immersive as games with motion controls since I am IN the game with both control schemes. At least for me it never broke immersion. If my head is in the game I am super immersed, I even forget I play with a Gamepad as I press and play instinctly not caring what input device I use, as said before, it never was intended otherwise. Taking Hitman 3 VR for example, THAT game with motion controlls breaks immersion immidiatly thanks to horrible motion controller implementation. Buggy, glitchy, left hand useless, making me constantly think "Why can't I use a gamepad instead?". I tried the VorpX version with motion controller gestures and it didn't really add anything for me because the game still plays gamepad-ish with not always recognizing inputs on top. I prefer a better visual implementation in VR instead of somewhat support of motion controllers. But that is just my opinion. :) Bottom line I am really hyped for Lukes take on it and hope my rig can somewhat handle it.
zamphir
I agree. Using a gamepad in VR feels like a small but significant step backwards. And while I truly appreciate the phenomenal work Luke does in the stereoscopic translation, not being able to play with the thumbstick and buttons on the VR controllers is a significant enough deterrent to prefer VorpX, even if the stereoscopic isn’t as good. Because using the hand controllers does make a difference.

I think ill just have to get over the thought that it will feel weird to stand up and play with a PS4 remote. I think the head turning is going to be worth it definitely. Will the mod have head oriented movement at all? I prefer that in every game I've played so far.
LukeRoss
I usually don't do that, but I believe there are third-party utilities that can remap the gamepad buttons onto the motions controls. The big problem is that motion controls lack the D-Pad, so they're usually a no-no for any conversion of flat AAA games (meaning, they're fine for a few minutes of YouTube video where people just want to wreak some havoc, but they're no good for playing dozens or hundreds of hours).
LukeRoss
It does feel very good to me (of course you need a wireless solution, otherwise the cable is just a total nuisance). But don't worry, you'll still be able to use smooth turning and play seated if you wish!!!
KYLE SPANN
One thing im struggling with is that in this mod we will be able to turn with our heads rather than the joysticks. I much prefer this usually but I am not sure how to play as I usually play Lukes mods sitting in a chair with "forward" never changing physically. If I want to use head turning, should I just stand up in an open space and turn while holding a game controller? Im not sure if that will feel very good with a controller instead of the motion controllers.

Elden Ring. Cyberpunk VR. Warhammer Total war. It's gonna be a rough week next week. I see lots of dishes not getting done. Thanks for your work!
Kaffennheister
Hi Luke. Thanks for your great work! Would it be possible for the Cyberpunk mod to add the option for mapping the xbox controller keys to vr controllers (such as the index knuckles) ? That would be a tremendous addition, immersion wise (even if the movements of the controllers don't match those ingame) ...especially convenient for people who use devices like vr treadmills (the one i think about is built to work in an optimal manner by emulating the thumbsticks of the vr controllers and has a system that allows decoupled head and body direction if the movement system is head oriented)
LukeRoss
It might be the audio issue: https://forums.cdprojektred.com/index.php?threads/currently-investigated-issues-last-updated-19-02-2022-patch-1-5.11098819/

I’ve just got to get my game working first, downloaded this as couldn’t handle the bugs…and now its not opening! Getting the flatline error :€ It’s via steam, I’ve got a high end rig so it’s not that….why lord whyyyyy
Joe To The Future
Literally stalking your patreon waiting for this to release ::come onnnn come onnnnnnnn::
Tom Westall
Cannot wait to try this! Reinstalled, waiting for orders :)
Stuart
This is going to be sooo good!
Cercata
The Other big games will be in the backburner until they get REAL mod ;)
MostLikelyInsane
I will be counting down the seconds, more excited for this than any of these other big games coming out like Elden Ring, Etc.
Christian
Hey Luke, it's better if you take a breather after you mod assassin's creed valhalla, because its has lots of game hours and new dlc content is coming! :-D
Christian
No i was hoping that the mod will release on friday, because that is a good start of the weekend :)
dreamking
Wow! Amazing!
Hoshi82
Oh yes baby. :)
LukeRoss
You might have a point there, my kind friend!
LukeRoss
You really take your gaming seriously :-D
Cercata
Shit, I'm still finishing Hitman 2 after 174h ... still didn't touch Hitman 3 No way I finish it by saturday
Cercata
You call that a breather ? You better go to a tropical island, or making some activity you like far from screens ;)
LukeRoss
I will probably take a breather to update GTA V to my new framework, we'll see!
LukeRoss
Thank you Most Likely! Release should be around Saturday, so don't wear down your F5 key :-D
MostLikelyInsane
I am BEYOND excited for this, I am a huge fan of your work having playedthrough all of GTA and RDR2 entirely in VR and Cyberpunk is one of my favorite games so when I actually walk through Night City and see it with my own eyes, I believe my lens will start fogging up from me happy crying. I keep refreshing patreon every few hours to see if there's an update, I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve night going to see if there are any presents by the tree, the anticipation is killing me. Thank you for making dreams a reality, well virtual reality anyway :)
Collin Drennen
Thanks very much for the update. Even though my PC is underpowered (when playing HZD), I am still looking forward to seeing what it be like to experience this in VR. Best of luck as you continue development. After the dust settles with the Cyberpunk release, will you be taking a breather (which would be well deserved), or will you be moving forward with another amazing game?

This makes me happy, love what reshade can do for r.e.a.l mods, horizon is so sharp and crystal clear using reshade.
LVNDSCAPE
The car bouncing scene made my day. Thx Luke for that moment.
Samir
So excited for this! It's looking amazing!
LukeRoss
Let me tell you, the encounter with Keanu is something else in VR []-)
LukeRoss
It sure does! Since I modded Mafia III, all my releases fully support ReShade effects and presets
LukeRoss
No, don't worry, the desktop mirror has no measurable impact whatsoever. That's precisely why I show the raw flickering image on the mirror instead of a stabilized composite image with the HUD properly blended in: to avoid any performance hit
LukeRoss
Welcome to the club!!!
LukeRoss
Not sure what you mean... The HUD in GTA V and Mafia III (and the rest of my mods) always has the same behavior: it's headlocked when the crosshair is shown or you're aiming down the sights, and it's fixed in space otherwise.
Hamish Prendergast
Your dedication and programming/reverse engineering prowess continue to astound me, Luke. You're magnificent, and an inspiration!
Solomon Ginsberg
Looks like there’s a way to add custom music, it’s doesnt look that simple but might be worth trying.
Cercata
It's on the news: https://uploadvr.com/cyberpunk-2077-vr-mod-gameplay/
Nick Brimble
This looks fricking epic. Cant wait to get up close and personal with Keanu. well done and thanks again Luke for creating these amazing mods.
Cercata
RE games are short, so very nice to play the making exercise, but sandbox games with hundeds of hours ...
Cercata
Technolust was ahead of its time, but the final version didn't launch on Steam, only on Oculus. And Blair Renaud aka Anticleric didn't give any explanation ... Now he's making LOW-FI, that is available in itch.io, but the pace of updates is very slow since he released a demo for a Quest spinoff ... There is also LONN in the works, but not many news since they released the first videos more than 2 years ago.
Hoshi82
Will this REAL version for CP have reshade implemented too? Would be cool then I can use my presets again which I use for the flat version. :)
Hoshi82
The soundtrack and score of that game is amazing, at least for me. But yes the teaser use one of the terrible radio stations ingame. Not a fan of that genre either. There are quite a bunch of radio stations you can cycle through or deactivate it completely when in car. There is a dedicated key for the radio.
Hoshi82
I always was wondering that too, if deactivating the desktop mirror would help performance wise.
Brandon(Post Maester)
Looks great! Will probably be deeply engrossed in Elden Ring but may take breaks when it gets frustrating and just cruise around night city and blow off some steam :)
Elliot Careswell
Just wondering if there could be a way to have it only in the headset and not on the monitor? Would this help with performance?
Joseph Auslander
Oh dude.. this is amazing news.. I can't wait to have no social life
Derrick taylor
Will the Hud move with the crosshair like it does in Mafia 3 or is it similar to the GTA Hud? I noticed that the Hud remained centered while the crosshair moves freely.
WIG
I wonder if there is a way to dump in custom songs. Maybe mod stations like fallout radio made by community edit: https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/articles/206/
LukeRoss
The radio can be turned off, but sure, a Blade Runner station would be awesome!
Greyhaim
channelling my inner V in preparation!!
Sebastian Paulmann
Ah man youre so awesome! Cant wait
Tyler M. Poelstra
I am super excited for this! You are absolutely incredible, Luke!
Solomon Ginsberg
Great news Luke! The braindance part of CP really caught my attention (tried using vorpx), similar to Connors ability in DBH. Look forward to enjoying CP with the pollish you always achieve. Watching your video reminded me, quite painfully of the terrible music, its not pleasant at all. I havent played much so I dont know if there are any settings to turn the music off? I hope so, or I’ll be doing a lot of walking… the ultimate solution would be to have the bladerunner moody soundtrack integrated :)
Garrett Adamson
I absolutely can't wait. Been holding off on playing the game until this mod comes out. Thank you, so much, for your work!
Nicky Butler
Already put 200 hours into this game. But another playthrough is on the cards i think to see judy and panam up close in vr ;). And night city of course :)
WIG
I have red dead, horizon and mafia series on epic and they work fine so I am sure it will be fine
Chris Hatton
Question: I have this on Epic store. Will that work?
Chris Hatton
Damn now I have to redownload it 😢 such incredible work Luke
Bret Champagne
Sorry Luke, I just can imagine how many times this damned controller support has been requested... I guess i 'll keep supporting your good work anyway. Please don't hate me! I swear to be a happy customer ;-) Cheers
Tim Chaisson
This is looking glorious! Cannot WAIT to try this out!
The Merote
Wow Luke its looking really impressive, I've I'm re-installing the game right now, this could be a game changer for this game
LukeRoss
I remember Technolust too, it was unwieldy but really promising!
Robin White
Really excited about this one Luke. Bought the game right at launch, played it a bit but was left feeling quite 'flat' :D There was an early VR experience in the Bladerunner vibe called Technolust that I remember on my DK2 back in 2014 - in those early days of VR almost anything with a detailed environment to look around at was so exciting even if there was little or no actual game. I think now with your Cyberpunk mod the proper "Look at me, I'm living life like Rick frickin' Deckard" moment will finally have arrived! Thanks dude!
gilles tres
was there a release date... i guess your saying within a week or 2? :) thanks a lot for this.. way to excited...
Matthew Kinsey
Lol, shed love to burn my Vive Pro 2 and pour a bucket of water down my PC while it's running. She dosent want a headset. All kidding aside this is going to be a fun week. Bravo Luke.
LukeRoss
It's actually way more complicated than a little R&D, and also in my view not the preferred direction that VR needs to go! I have a full post on the matter at https://www.patreon.com/posts/52202067
LukeRoss
Thank you Marius, that would be awesome!!!
Bret Champagne
Please don't spend too much time on an hypothetical From SoftWare vr mod. Their games are way creepy enough on fatscreens. (I guess not everyone will agree, but personally Sekiro was my limit in the darkness.)
Hoshi82
Hyped!
Bret Champagne
Since I m here, I wanted you to know I was more than OK with gamepad in VR. But still, a little "research and development" to add motion controller support would now be welcomed ... It would be less "chilling" than playing with a pad but I would feel less guilty if I could make some kind of physical exercise while playing games... Says the guy who played Resident Evil 2 with Praydog's mod... in third person... with the pad (plus one or two perverted outfit mods... what a strange experience it was...)
VirtualmisterL
Awesome. I'm really looking forward to this, as dystopian futures are right up my street. I haven't played it since launch so hope they gave the world a bit more life in updates
Tarun Charaipotra
This is everything I've ever wanted, ever since I used to watch Blade Runner as a kid. I feel like the future has finally arrived thanks to your hard work [which, offense -- should have been done by the developers of this game, given it's a no-brainer for VR]. It also sounds like you really got a everything working well for this game, which just sweetens the deal. Killin it for us, Luke!
Shawn Colton
Just re-installed it just for your VR mod! I can't wait!!!! THANK YOU!!!
Mr. BLid
Breathtaking! I love this game and will most definately be making a new video guide to the people with lower end GPU's, so we too can enjoy this magnificant game. Love the work you do, Luke! Really looking forward to playing this.
Bret Champagne
Maybe this winter won't be too long after all ;-) Thank you Luke... I started a "REAL" run of GTA V months ago. Didn't want it to end too fast but I guess it's time to move on and discover this dystopic mess...
Christian
Great work Luke! i'm looking forward to this one!!!
petrus munteanu
same here, tried it with VorpX then suspended my playthrough after a few hours waiting for a better solution. Can't wait! :)
LukeRoss
Thank you Lisa!!! No misaligned icons with my mods, see 0:20 for example ;-)
LukeRoss
Buy her a headset?
LukeRoss
The rumored performance for the upcoming RTX 40xx series is incredible, if there is any truth to the rumors we might be playing with Ultra raytracing in VR in just a few months!
LukeRoss
You might, but with that GPU you'll probably need to use Mono mode to have decent fps
Matthew Kinsey
Noooo........the same week Elden Ring releases??? My wife is going to kill me. Curse you Luke Ross!!!.......( shakes fist at sky)
Cercata
I was so busy sharing I saw it with holes XD When PS6 release, we'll be able to play it on ultra with our RTXi 6080 ;)
Lee
Already know the answer to this question but figured I'd shoot my shot. Could I possibly test this on my Ryzen 5 3600x , RX 580 8 gb with 16 gb of Ram PC? :D
Lisa Croxford
Can't wait, played a bit with the VorpX version but the fact that the floating loot icons were all miss aligned was super anoying. I've been holding off jumping back into this game after the 1.5 update, definitely stocking up with pizza
LukeRoss
Thank you! Mostly, yes. Settings are visible at 4:04 https://youtu.be/vR2LnatpuFo?t=244
Lee
Dude! OMG I am so ready for this!
Cercata
MAGIC !!!!! Is the video on low settings ?
Dyroo91
congratulations on your work can't wait for you to release the mood so that I can present it to my French YouTube subscribers and test it myself👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
