Steady 1st person cam, orange is the new blue
🕑 Added 2022-05-28 11:30:09 +0000 UTCHey friends! Just a couple of weeks have gone by since this beautiful community's first birthday, and I already have another amazing number to add to the list: 3,055 Patrons as of today!!!
Now, I know that on average one in three will cancel the pledge before the end of the month, so as June rolls in the number is likely to drop to around 2K again. But still, for a moment there we touched the stars []-)
Speaking of stars: Elden Ring is a hugely complex title, and I know that its performance hasn't been stellar for many of you, what with the game being almost completely single-threaded, and all in all not a very good PC port. However, it's also so beautiful and addictive that it somehow makes you forgive every defect.
One of the most interesting ways of taking in its wonderfully detailed, epic world is by playing (or at least exploring, if you find combat too hard) in first person VR, and since the game doesn't implement a 1st person camera, in my original release I "hacked" it by attaching the camera to the character's head, which unfortunately bobs up and down like there's no tomorrow. When you walk, when you run, whenever you step on a small irregularity in the terrain: up and down and all around it goes, really putting your VR legs to the test.
I've been working hard on it (also in view of my next upcoming conversion, which should be ready in a couple of weeks and suffered from the same issue) and I'm happy to announce that I now have a general solution to the problem that seems to work pretty well, at least according to my preliminary testing.
Release 4.2.0 attached below implements this solution for Elden Ring. It is active by default, but as usual with my mods you can also revert to the previous configuration in case there's anything you don't like: the checkbox is the one highlighted in the picture above, "Disable head bobbing" in the "ELDEN" tab of the mod overlay.
I will try to make a video comparing the 1st person camera feel before and after the smoothing, but if any of you guys who are more skilled at this than I am wants to do it, I will add the link here!!
Besides the 1st-person camera stabilizer, this release brings several additional quality-of-life improvements, some of which can also be seen in the picture above.
- Completely redone color palette: I have to confess that I was never a fan of the original palette the R.E.A.L. VR mod came with, as I felt that it was too cold and impersonal. However there were always more important, urgent things to deal with. For our birthday, I decided it was finally time to gift us a good makeover :-)
The previous palette is still selectable as "Legacy" from the "Global style" drop-down in the "Overlay" tab, if you're feeling nostalgic or just want to make comparisons. - New scalable font: Besides having a warmer, 70's inspired look, the mod UI should now scale much better on different headsets and monitors. The new font is much cleaner and more legible, and the spacing between controls will no longer get cramped on super-high resolutions.
A quick reminder: the mod always tries to choose the best magnification level according to your headset characteristics, but in case it guesses wrong, you can customize the font size manually when you are in the main mod overlay (not the quick menu) by using Ctrl+Mouse wheel up/down. - Software mouse cursor: This was a much requested change, especially for those of you who like to play with keyboard and mouse. It took a nice amount of work, but I believe it was worth it.
The mod will now display a software mouse cursor (you can see it in the picture above next to World size, with the tiny "REAL VR" label under it), not only when you're navigating the mod overlay, but at all times when the game would have displayed the normal hardware mouse cursor on the monitor. This way you'll finally be able to select all buttons, menus, icons, etc. in the game menus and interfaces without flying blind and having to guess where your mouse cursor is. - Mousetrap: Going together with the previous point (and also quite a lot of work but long overdue): the R.E.A.L. VR mod now implements a mousetrap which will keep the mouse pointer confined to the game window on the monitor.
You will no longer lose track of where your mouse is, and there will be no more accidental clicks out of the game window that make it lose focus and randomly activate other programs or windows in the system.
This however needs to be implemented separately for each game, and for the moment it's active only in Elden Ring and the next upcoming title. - More robust head detection code: Some of you experienced an issue with the first person camera in Elden Ring, where the attachment point would sometimes randomly shift from the character's head to the midsection (for instance when falling, mounting/dismounting Torrent, opening chests). It seemed to depend heavily on the character type and probably also from the items being worn.
I made the detection code more robust, and with the new changes I was no longer able to reproduce any camera shifts with the saved games that you guys kindly sent to me. - 1st person camera resync: Just in case the previous modifications should turn out not to be as failproof as I hope, I also added an explicit "Resync camera" to the first person control panel (you can see it in the picture above), which will reset the detection code if anything goes wrong. Previously you would have to die or teleport to bring the camera back from the midsection to the head if sync was lost.
There is also an "Auto resync" in case you experience frequent problems, but I don't believe it should be needed. Your feedback is important and welcome as usual!
I hope this release will make Elden Ring a lot more enjoyable for you guys, and I'm also very happy to confirm what I already anticipated in a few comments to previous posts: the next game on this Patreon will have AMAZING performance! In playtesting on my RTX 3090 I'm seeing a steady 180 fps at 3920x3920 in almost all areas, which translates to a super-sharp image with absolutely zero artifacts.
Let's keep the VR torch burning!
P.S. The Epic Games store is giving away the BioShock Collection for free!!! Make sure to grab it before June 2 unless you already own it! I'm not working on it at the moment, but many of you have been asking for a VR conversion and sooner or later it's going to happen :-D

Bioshock VR no way!!!

Actually, you will probably get a faster response if you don't ask so far back in the post history :). I don't often scroll down this far. Best to ask questions in Start Here post for now. Also, please use the reply button to keep things organized. If you still have issues, make sure to post up in Start Here so I see it :)
ben howis
Amazing appreciate the super fast response I'll hopefully give that ago tomorrow
Brandon(Post Maester)
You can find the latest version here https://www.patreon.com/posts/kids-arent-76191161 Run the config file and don't adjust any settings. Play and see how the performance is at base config settings. Make sure your GPU driver is up to date also. If you still have the same issue, put your RealVR64.log file on pastebin and post the link here.

Howdy everyone hope you'll all had an amazing Christmas, I'm trying to play elden ring in vr first I installed the 4.1 mod then it told me it needed an update so I kept updating it, but now I'm at a stand still I'm at the very first level and each time I do anything it goes from over 100fps all the way down to 8fps, I have a 3080 and I tried it on high settings with no luck so I tried each other settings with the same results so I put it up to dumbo has done something wrong, everything plays in the headset fine but as soon as that happens etc it starts losing frames, I've changed the headset so it allows 120hz
Brandon(Post Maester)
Awesome, have fun!
Pandino Biscottino
Using the mod to modify the regulation file and reducing grass, plants, plant animation and rain I made everything more stable and now I can focus only on the game... Top!
Brandon(Post Maester)
You could also try something like msi afterburner to overclock or undervolt your gpu if you don't already. I undervolt my 3080ti to get a pretty constant 1780 clock instead of the 1665 or whatever it would throttle itself down to. But all that matters is that you can sit back and enjoy being immersed in the game :)
Pandino Biscottino
I thank you for the time you are dedicating to me, I also tried VRPERFKIT by renaming the dxgi but it doesn't start. In the end it works fine for me, nice visually and 80/90fps in closed areas and around 60/70 in open areas. the tree-lined areas bring down my framerate between 50/60... I was reading that someone had managed to make it work and it would have been a nice little help...
Brandon(Post Maester)
No go for me either. It had no impact on actual game performance. I also tried the newest version which is the Openvrfsr app which installs it automatically and neither version had any impact when installed. I was under 60fps when I tried them just to make sure. You can try asking on the Flat2VR discord. Are you working with a hardware limitation? Leaving that option entirely, make sure you disable anything you can running in the background. Also you can set the games priority to high in the task manager. Some people have experimented with turning hyperthreading off if you want to do some googling. If you haven't, also try watching some youtube vids on best settings for fps. Wish I could be more help but I didn't put that much time into Elden Ring myself. Also turn off the steam overlay and desktop game theater if you haven't.
Pandino Biscottino
I tried with openvr but it doesn't activate. I put true in debug mode but nothing happens. did you do anything in particular?
Pandino Biscottino
I have both openvr and VRPERFKIT, for the moment I have used the second without success, with openvr on elden ring were you able to activate fsr and radius? thanks
Brandon(Post Maester)
I have used openvrfsr which predated vrperfkit with lukes mods. I just changed the openvr_api.dll in the mod to openvr_api.orig.dll so it did not conflict with the file from openvrfsr. You can probably do the same thing with vrperfkit and the dxgi file. Maybe change the dxgi from the real mod to d3d.dll Not sure if that will work but the first option worked for me. It has been a while ago so if you don't have any success, let me know and I will give it a shot myself tonight or tomorrow morning. Alternatively, what about using Nvidia image scaling? If you have an Nvidia gpu, look it up for directions on how to use it :)
Pandino Biscottino
Hi, I'm playing Elden Ring with good results but I need to get a few more fps without having to reduce resolution or graphics settings (already set to minimum). is there no way to setup a mod similar to VRPERFKIT? Otherwise (even without dlss) something would be enough for me to reduce the radius in which full resolution is achieved by scaling to the edges. Is there anything?
LukeRoss
It's there already! It's the first thing the mod asks you to do when you launch it for the first time :-D If you missed it just delete RealVR.ini before running the game the next time
duke54
I use the steam controller, and no, it doesn't seem to work using both triggers as gamepad input to open the menu. I also, tried binding a button to the pause key but that didn't work either. ( I used the method of 'listening' to the pause key to select it since you can't select it in the menu) @LukeRoss, an option to change the key for the VR menu would be nice.
Nabi Hussaini
Same here! Black bars at the top and bottom and cant view the HUD because it's way too close. Also it seems like it won't boot for me unless it's the default resolution.
Adam
Yeah I've experienced it too. Black bars at the top and bottom of the view, and the HUD moves with you and you can't see it. Seems it's broken at the moment.
pampalini303
The HUD misplaced after today's update. Has anyone else experienced this?
Adam
Thanks, I didn't know about the shake head thing, great tip! Yeah I know it isn't made for first, but funnily enough I'm having a blast with it.
LukeRoss
Hi, welcome to the Patreon! Unfortunately I cannot support the Steam controller because I don't have one and it's been out of production since 2019. The mod uses XInput for the gamepad, so if your Steam controller can be put in a mode where it sends XInput commands to the game, the mod should recognize it automatically. Hopefully some other Patrons who have found a way to do that will see this thread and post their solutions...
Ilaner2000
Hi I am a new guy here, can you let me know how to show the REAL VR Mod menu with my steam controller? I tried pressing both triggers but it does not work. I can only use my keyboard to open mod menu. Also, how to switch between pages in the mod menu? Thank you
Kenneth Campbell
Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. The controller works fine with all my other games. Just not this one. I've tried re-installing it, changing different settings, etc., and nothing has worked. It's a real head scratcher.
Cercata
In steam, go to the game properties, controller section, and "Disable Steam Input"
Cercata
If it was made for first person with good performance, it wouldn't be a challenge for you :P The next game is being a challenge ?
LukeRoss
Hey Adam, thanks for your words of appreciation and glad that you're enjoying the mod!! When the camera drifts, have you tried recentering your view in VR? (Simply shake your head "no") I still hope to be able to make the camera better in future releases, although this game is really not made for 1st person :-)
Adam
Absolutely LOVING this mod! Already got hours of entertainment from it, thank you so much for this! Question - is it normal for the camera to drift from the original position in first person mode? I find that after some time the camera "moves" from the position I set it, and I have to adjust the position again manually. I've also noticed the camera moving off to the side when doing certain things like sprinting. Is that normal? Any tips on how I can fix this? For some reason I don't get any motion sickness at all in VR, so I'm trying to play FP mode as much as possible, even during boss fights! Would love to see further improvements to FP mode, or hopefully someone develops a first person mod that's similar to the Dark Souls 3 FP mod, that's compatible with this mod. For some reason I'm immune to VR sickness, so playing first person mode.
Kenneth Campbell
Thanks for the info, but, how do you disable the layers?
Cercata
You have the game on Steam ? Steam offen add layers over the controller, be sure to disable those layers for Elden Ring if you are using an Xbox controller.
Kenneth Campbell
I have the mod working, but I'm having trouble with my Xbox controller. When I start play, my guy starts running until he hits a wall. But his legs keep running. If I hold one of the buttons, I can control his direction and camera direction. Any ideas? My controller works fine with other games. Help!
Cercata
I tryed it with VorpX, I found it almost playable, I guess a VR MOD wouln't be difficult.
Lando
You are a god among men
Tryyton
can't wait to play this finally! great job, keep at it!
Sophie
My friend and I would carry the VR torch killing zombies and trying to stay human in the dying light :-):-):-)
Flowzen
so you say keep the (vr) torch burning..my guess is far cry primal then..a lot of torches-and assumingly a lot of fun in vr :)
Darren Paul
The Witcher 3 would be amazing in 1st person VR
Cercata
I was just wondering what would be the performance of spiderman on PC ... > whenever it actually comes out 12/08/2022, in 2 months
MostLikelyInsane
Just planting a seed here, spider-man remastered is coming to pc, you know what you gotta do for all us web heads out there that dreamed of whipping around like spider-man. You know, whenever it actually comes out
Gaz252
Everything apart from GTA 5, so Red Dead Redemption 2, Mafia Trilogy, Horizon Zero Dawn, Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring
AdamZeZ
im new to ur patreon. so this download 4.2.0 works only for elden ring? or does it convert all the games you worked on?
Bob Douglass
Wait, I just read that PS on your post. Ahhhhh that makes me happy
Gaz252
SPIDERMAN Remastered coming to PC in August, if theres 1 game that VR enthusiasts have been crying out for its a spidey game, a REAL VR mod for this would be a huge boost for VR, Please Please pretty please with a thousand cherries on top.
Darren Paul
.
Cercata
I want all of those :P Also Dying Light 2
Cercata
Yeah, Quantic Dream games could be good in VR ... didn't know they were on PC.
Brandon(Post Maester)
Just going to throw these out there for future consideration. Heavy Rain and Detroit Become Human.
Rod
That is great to hear this, great to see this community growing. Already own all Bioshock games, that is pity , there is nothing better than a free lunch ;-)
Vincent Baziuk
Hey just joined today. Congrats on numbers. Watch some great video coverage of your work, just amazing mods. Can't wait to try them, and shoot some videos.
Carl Byrne
I have been turning off the UI for even greater immersion! My Gameplay is all here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgvsjAceP_450Qp1yL1gpew

True! Make a new survey Luke ! Gods of War? Watchdogs Legion? Assassin Valhalla? on the table?
WIG
Luke would love to see another survey of games you want to work on and let the people vote again as there are a lot of new patreons 💪 Might help you retain some more 👍👍
Cercata
3 fucking missions AC7 on PSVR only :(
Cazanu
oh witcher 3 with those forrests and beautifull open world would be so cool to visit, but i think luke said he is waiting for the next gen update, but anyway little people know the update will consist mostly of HD Reworked Project mod,the moder was hired by cdprojectred to bring that mod to the next gen update and proly dlss and ray tracing.
Papa Plastic
The Resident Evil games have already been done in VR. https://github.com/praydog/REFramework/releases
Momentum
Throwing my thoughts in on future conversions, I’d really love to see Resident Evil 7+8 and some of the later Far Cry games like anything 4-6. I think they’d all make great LukeRoss games.
drowhunter
180fps Ace Combat 7!, In the spirit of Top Gun ? I feel like some games would be so natural for the REAL treatment like Everspace 2 GRID or Ace Combat because controllers will never be an issue there. I was always mad that Namco never saw fit to give us VR on PC .
DrVegard
Bump :D
Steve Smith
To be honest I would love to play FS22 in VR using your software as can never get vorpX to work. Currently losing myself in RDR2!
Steve Smith
180fps….Farm Simulator 22 for the win! (did I say that out loud? lol)
LukeRoss
There is a clock! From the Overlay tab, near "Show FPS" you will also find "Show clock" :-D
petrus munteanu
Since the GUI has got some attention now, maybe it could display the system time, too? I'm not sure a clock is even doable and it may seem kind of out of scope, but it would be quite useful for time management. I have to get out of VR a lot in order to check the time.
Andii Doedema
Does anyone know if the VR mod would work alongside the co-op mod?
LukeRoss
Great! Thanks for the report
LukeRoss
Hi Seearbi, your game appears to be starting in 1920x1080 resolution instead of the square one that RealConfig selects. Did you remember to run RealConfig after the update?
LukeRoss
Hey kalas, thank you for the feedback! At times, as you noticed, it can be difficult to sort out what part of the motion is due to the character animation and what is due to the character actually moving around in the world. Torrent complicates things because it adds further animations. This is only a first iteration however, I might be able to come up with something better in the future!
LukeRoss
Thank you Petrus! Assassin's Creed games should look great in VR, I just wish each day had 240 hours so that I would be able to do every game you guys suggest (not saying this in a sarcastic way, I really would like to be able to do more!)
LukeRoss
Yes, the latest release always supports all Patreon games
Tyler Johnson
Does patch v4.2.0 work for Horizon Zero Dawn as well?

I've been playing the ascended mod, which while absurdly difficult, has been a great way to re-experience the game. Works great with the VR mod. https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/1019

Bit of useful information for anyone like me who really wants to play in VR and also wants to freshen things up with the new Enemy + Item Randomizer mod. The only way I was able to get them to work together (since it appears the randomizer only works if launched via the ModEngine 2 launcher) was to do the following: 1. Install the RealVR mod in the standard game directory as the instructions state. Run the RealConfig batch file to get it set up properly. 2. Follow the Randomizer guide instructions. Basically, install Elden Mod Loader files in the base game directory, then download ModEngine 2 and get that into it's own folder. Place all the loose files from the Randomizer mod into the "mods" folder inside the ModEngine 2 folder. Run the randomizer app. 3. Finally, gather all the RealVR files and folders from the base game directory and copy them into the ModEngine 2 "mods" folder. You will then run the game from the Launch ModEngine file. I spent a good while trying to figure out how to go about accomplishing this and figured I'd share so anyone with the same interest doesn't have to stumble through the same mishaps or feel like they have to sacrifice one mod over the other. EDIT: It's entirely possible that their is a much easier way to accomplish this. Just sharing what seemed to work for me since launching from the RealVR installed start_protected_game file didn't seem to load the Randomizer.
Aaron R
New update is phenomenal, Luke! Can't thank you enough for the effort.
Solomon Ginsberg
ER is by far the worst, Luke did an excellent job fixing it. The other games are significantly better. Give them go!
Antonio Mora
"A game with AER at 45 fps is unplayable" Not for me.
petrus munteanu
the Batman series would be great, especially since there's no consistent first person camera mod for them yet; I guess if the developers reused their engine, you would shoot 3 birds with one stone. Same for the the Assassin's Creed series, the modern ones. Would be a blast to climb all those towers in VR
petrus munteanu
so far this change is great. I've been playing first person so far and I have been kind of walking slowly all the time in order not to mess with my head. Game changer for me, thank you!
G. Yam
Now that everyone seems to have a little wish expressed here......I can't stand up either. maybe Max Payne or Batman or Sam Fisher... Open world games are great no question about it. But I bet half your community is stuck in 7 different worlds in 7 different fates. Something to flow through would also be interesting. btw...happy bday for your project ;D
LowRider
DLSS was a bit blurry for me too. Did you try FSR instead? For me this results in a much clearer image..

My first thought was witcher 3 as well. Totaly fine with that if it is :)

Please THE WITCHER 3 :):):)

New Title in the MAKING?? 180 FPS ?!?! WOHA! WHEN IS THE BIG REVEAL ??
Tiger Man
Single frame rendering is what REAL mod needs, maybe choose a game where is possible ? Integrating FSR/NIS too would help a lot (where is possible) ;) A game at 45fps in single frame rendering looks much better than a game with AER at 90 fps. A game with AER at 45 fps is unplayable
Grocs
Thanks Luke - so far so good with 4.20. Seems to run smoother at High settings too. First person mode much better now.
Seearbi
Radeon user here (RX 6800). Started using your mod since version 4.1.0, which worked the first few times, but now just crashes on launch (including 4.2.0). https://pastebin.com/Af7XEzbd
Rai Darkblade
Is the head bob just with elden ring, or is this an issue/feature with any of your other conversions? Had it a little bit playing HZD
kalas
Thanks for this update Luke! It does feel a lot more comfortable to play, although it can be a bit janky when moving on up / down slopes (camera seems to 'sink in', though flat ground works pretty well). Also noticing the camera seems to end up a bit to the left or right of the character when horse riding or generally if the character is moving faster than usual e.g. sprint or rolling the camera can end up a bit away from the character especially if I'm looking at a different direction than the character is facing. Anyway just some user feedback, in any case thanks for having this option it really does feel smoother :)
Antonio Mora
You need OpenIV to do this right?
Momentum
Sorry to insert RDR2 news into this thread but in my limited testing this person seems to have solved all frametime spike stutters in RDR2 with a modified gameconfig. It's working for me with the latest game version 1436.31 and as far as I can tell has solved the stutters in towns and when slowing down your horse. https://www.nexusmods.com/reddeadredemption2/mods/1502?tab=description

Issue with Red Dead. I can't launch it, the game crash on boot. I just noticed one error when use RealConfig.bat to generate files. Inside RealVR64.json generated there is a double // on this line "library_path": ".\\RealVR64.dll", I removed one \ the game launch now but no VR

´Just tried cyberpunkt it is even worse-- i guess thats some graphic settings im missing? CP is super blurry you cant make out faces even.
Cercata
OMG, it's the first time something like this arrives and I have not already beaten the games, I'll play the definitive version this time XD PS: Sooner or Later ? :P

Hey.. i play horizon zero dawn- sometimes i have really blurry graphis and then they are fine again, i dont know whats happening - and what the best settings are for clarity - can somebody help?
Critical
I am really looking forward to your next game. The promise of a vr mod with good performance keeps me here, since i cannot forgive ERs lousy performance. I dont want to chose between acceptable fps or acceptable graphic fidelity. Esp. in VR.
Critical
+1 Dlss Fix, but you alrerady know, i guess ;-)
Marc Reis
Cp2077 I did play through flat, got me really hooked! I planed on playing it again VR, but in the Pimax8k the DLSS produces ghosting images, each eye a bit to the other side, I guess due to the canted displays, so I need to dig into that or hope that you fix it 😝.( VR DLSS does work in Assetto Corsa Competicione, but i guess it's accounting the device specifics )
D
Any hints to what the new game conversion ?
LukeRoss
Tell me about that! I still haven't finished playing CP2077 :-(
Marc Reis
Thanks! Sounds great and can't wait to see what's coming - just need more time for playing I guess 😊

Always excited for your posts, keep up the extraordinary work Luke 👏🏽
