There's a whole other car culture that sprang up with the creation of the suburbs: lawn care. I recently saw a quote from an early suburb developer, proudly claiming that a man busy tending his new suburban lawn has no time to organize politically. What was this other car? The lawn mower.

Absolutely beautiful! I’ve been a lifelong bicycle commuter and I’m almost 37. A super loser in USA. Oregon, Washington, Texas and Colorado - no car. I have big bags and I carry everything around like a weirdo. I’m regularly insulted by those who think non-car ownership is for children or non-serious people. Cars create anti-human infrastructure. They make land dangerous simply so humans can take travel for granted. Many humans travel miles just to obtain snacks. Not for need but desire. Most people rarely touch the ground. They use their boxes to move from one building to the next. It’s so wild! Not everyone can be like me. Most people have families, children to take places. We use cars too often. They are just tools to move things.

One of the things that's always forgotten about in the car Vs walkable cities model is those with a disability. It's not reasonable to expect every person with mobility issues to either own a car or use a wheelchair. Yes to accessible public transport but also to benches! There are parts of Europe where this is considered but in cities in the UK if you don't drive and have mobility issues, the answer is so often that you can use a wheelchair. Never mind if walking small amounts with regular breaks is actually good for your health.
