Wes, noticed you're more on the glove train, did you find a brand that holds up? Tried to find a matching product but Google and "orange orange textured glove" doesn't quite narrow it down. Can you help a guy out? Got some filthy jobs end of this week...

I once did head gaskets on an LML Duramax 2013 I think. Terrible job. It's easier to pull the cab than remove the engine. That being said, true hell for me would be working on Powerstrokes. They seem to be so much more confined. You seem to have mastered thos things though. I've decided if I'm working on a diesel it better be a Cummins or not at all. The straight six allows for so much more room in the engine compartement.

cool bananas

Great video! I don't know much about these Isuzu based Duramax engines. If you want a real fun time, check out the variable geometry turbo system that Komatsu uses on their diesels (Cummins/Komatsu engines are joint venture). Instead of an electrical actuator, they actuate it with high pressure engine oil. Engine oil is pressurized by an engine driven booster pump, then sent to a hydraulic actuator on the turbo. Great in theory, until the operator's service intervals go out the window and the oil gets trashed. When I was a komatsu field engineer we had a blast with these. Once they stopped working the EGR, DOC, DPF, and SCR systems all went haywire. Sweet memories.

Looks like the 6 cyl diesels are much easier to work on than the V8s.
boubaros
Excellent like always. Did you ever replace the rest of the glowplugs after that impressive work with the broken one?
Bill
glad you got to work with Area Diesel again, and thanks for doing all the hard work so I could sit here and say 'wow, I'm glad I don't have to do that'
David Yates
That really did not look like fun! Makes me wonder whether one of the many carbon removing foams might have freed up the control ring, but I suppose it would be almost as much work getting the product into the turbo as it was just to replace it! Wise move just replacing the whole thing.
CapnMac82
Hmm, perhaps the Mrs can start looking for a cornfield version of Vinnie and the SemiSuperVillans having royalty-free music is its own reward (if yet another video editing task).

Now, Isuzu makes good power, and access on say, excavators and front end loaders is not bad. Sadly, anything touched by CDJR seems to get sideways quickly. That the shop manuals do not all begin with "!. Remove drivetrain and separate transmission from engine..." still amazes me.
Roger Howell
FORD came out with the Godzilla gasoline engine. Now I see why it is a good option.
Watch Wes Work
I think it would be easier. Unfortunately, I can't even get it into my shop at the moment.
Watch Wes Work
Those are definitely easier. Though hoisting that 50lb turbo out of the wheel well is not fun.
Watch Wes Work
Those up pipes aren't any fun either!
Watch Wes Work
I don't know if they are using them now or not. I would bet they are.
mrklean
Ugh i was complaining about doing turbo pedestal seals on the pre 98 power strokes with the square exhaust flange with the evil bolts the other day. Still bruised from laying on that hood latch for hours. Feel your pain.
Roger Howell
Thankful I never had to work on variable vane turbos on commercial truck engines.
Roger Howell
And manually checked the oil psi at the actuator.
Roger Howell
Surprised you didn't consider removing the cab.
Aaron Windsor
I have actually done that with my sons 2008 Cummins. I just had to pull the right inner fender, then he sells it 6 months later! I was glad to see it go!! WOW!!!!
Watch Wes Work
Building stairs today!
Chris Freemesser
And a company that actually PROPERLY rebuilds components...a rarity in today's society unfortunately
Eric Corse
I can't imagine doing that without the topside creeper, nothing like standing on your head for hours. Looking forward to I'm not a carpenter part deux.
Dennis Lesh
You don't know how much I hate working on cars.
Watch Wes Work
Keeping GM mechanics well paid!
Watch Wes Work
Honestly, I think it would be easier. You can have the cab off in 2 hours.
Watch Wes Work
He would grab the matches and send her home!
Watch Wes Work
Hmm. I dunno. If someone waved $12,000 at me, I might do about anything...
Watch Wes Work
There are other companies that can do some of the things they do, but I don't know of anyone who can do all the things they do. It's amazing, and they are close-ish to me.
Watch Wes Work
Yeah these turbos are way more complex than they need to be, at least in my opinion.
Watch Wes Work
Who would have thought a turbo could be so complicated.
Watch Wes Work
Exactly. Job security for all involved!
Watch Wes Work
It's weird to find a legitimately good company that can do what they say they can do.
Watch Wes Work
Interesting. VW diagnostics are the weirdest in the business IMO. Every time I try to fix one I end up more confused than when I started.
dozerman53111
What a hot mess. No fun at all !!!
Greg
Wow, I'm feeling a lot better about the 20 hour struggle bus I just got off, that was a bronze acme nut with a worm gear cut into the outside of it, rush job, no drawing, the original was a hammered pos, millwrights removed it from the jack its part of with a sawzall. But in the weird world of variable geometry turbos, My tdi VW had a very similar code coupled with an absolute loss of power. computer said it was vane actuator performance, but all it was was a loose downpipe connection, made me think of that when you saw that quad nutted down pipe.

Mine is an 06 LBZ with 130k. Luckily, it’s a mostly rust free Texas truck, but this job will keep me awake at night. Easy to see why lots of guys take the cab off to do this job. If only I had a lift….
Alan Wood
I'll stick to fixing computers. My Dad repaired cars in the UK up until the early 90s, when things were simpler. I'd love to see his reaction to that abomination. Cheers Wes.
Dennis Lesh
I wouldn't want your job for $1000 per hour.
Anthony deFreitas
Watching your videos and other channels. Area Diesel Service seems to be one of the best contacts to come from YouTube
Noah
Honestly Wes, I would love to see more breakdowns and explanations of components and systems like you did with the VGT. You explained it really well and it was easy to follow, unlike my college education where stuff tends to be drastically overcomplicated and it's difficult to retain. Keep up the great work!
David Wallace
Same reason they complicate EVERYTHING... emissions.. :(
David Wallace
Another great technical 'how it works' drawing. I love these bits... above and beyond. Keep 'em coming Wes.

Marketing: We need an HD truck with a Duramax Diesel and turbocharger to stay competitive. Engineering: OK, we need to make the engine bay larger to fit that engine. Finance: Oh no you don't! We have to use all of the same parts as we use for the other trucks. We can't afford to have a 'special' truck. Marketing: Nobody will pay a lot more for a special truck. They will just buy a Ford or Ram. Engineering: Well, we can squeeze it in there, but nobody will ever be able to work on it. Finance: That's OK. These things won't last longer than 8 - 10 years. Marketing: Great, then we can sell them a new truck!
Chris Freemesser
I'll never own a diesel but it legit makes me feel good that places like Area Diesel Service exist

I just got my diesel Jaguar F-Pace SUV back today after the turbo blew up last June.... It now has a brand new engine, which was only $50,000 - also a new exhaust for only $7,000 - plus whatever labor was required for said replacement..... This was the second time the turbo grenaded in less that 65,000 miles. Needless to say, I will not be buying another modern diesel. And, no, I did not pay for it, luckily. The car is only worth $25k at best. And it took almost a year to fix it, not sure what the book rate is for engine & exhaust replacement, but it's a lot more than 12 hours....
Watch Wes Work
I don't know why they made them so complicated.
Watch Wes Work
It gets even worse on the newer ones with DPF and all that fun stuff.
Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)
We can definitely agree on that!
Marshall
That turbo is an amazing piece of mechanical engineering! Brilliant call on the fix.
Jay VanLanduyt
Gadzooks, what a miserable job. Thanks for bringing us along.
Watch Wes Work
I'll send you a broken Duramax. They always cheer me up...
Watch Wes Work
That was back when diesels were simple. This thing is like a space shuttle.
Watch Wes Work
Me too. I keep waiting for it to die so I can justify a Milwaukee high speed. But it just goes and goes...
Watch Wes Work
I already got two framing nailers and a pile of finish nailers. Folks are too generous!
Kowyn Hibbert (Warrior of the Rusty Wrench)
I don't know my 41-year-old Toyota diesel pickup is doing okay haha, mind you I don't think there's a bolt I haven't touched at that point.
Jon Koferl
great job Wes. way to hang in there
Virtue Streams
Well done!

I have an 04 2500hd with the 6.0 gasser. Fantastic trucks. Also, I can’t believe that little cordless ratchet is still chugging along
Terry Kasprzyk
Great video nice job👍
South Street Barbecue
Finally, something goes well today. Thanks Wes, I needed that.

My own stress levels kept rising watching you work in the super tight quarters, hunched up below or above the engine in awkward positions, barely able to see or feel what you are working on. You definitely have the skills and dedication to really pull off these super tough jobs. It's inspiring, for me anyway. Thanks for sharing.
Arnold Boyd
My offer still stands, I can drop off a nail gun on Monday.
