If you want to learn more about the US prison system and the convict leasing system, I highly recommend “American Prison” by Shane Bauer, and “Slavery By Another Name” by Douglas Blackmon.
This is so dark. I have a friend from Louisiana who told me about Angola prison. In addition to the terrible conditions and prison labor, they have an “Angola prison rodeo” where members of the community pay to come watch inmates compete in rodeo events, including a poker game where literal bulls are released and run rampant. Last man standing “wins”. The prison argues that inmates “volunteer” to participate and are compensated but that in itself is so fucked. It’s right out there on a website and everything.
