I don’t think Grace knew her husband was dead for sure. But the fact that her husband hadn’t returned home after the war made her think he probably was. I always assumed that she went crazy because of the constant darkness and because she needed to be so vigilant to keep it that way. And ultimately, she took it out on the kids. An allergic reaction to sunlight is a real thing. In extreme cases, it can cause blistering with brief exposure. It can even happen from exposure to indoor light. I’ve never heard of it being deadly, but I guess it could be if the blistering was really bad and covered a large portion of the body. Of course, in 1946, they probably wouldn’t have known much about it, especially since it’s so rare. I thought it was so poignant at the end when they all realized that the light couldn’t hurt the children anymore. They were so happy to stand in front of the window without curtains. And there wasn’t any more fog outside, just bright sunlight.
