No luck there, it seemed. Natalie shrugged. "Alright, I won't press." A short beat of silence. "Well, how about the present, then? How come you lock up so much around Elida?"
"Lock … up?"
"I know you're reserved, but you still talk and joke around with me, here and there. But around her, you shut down. You've known her longer, haven't you?"
"You aren't Elida."
"That might be the nicest thing you've said to me."
Amused, Vanetta poked Natalie's stomach with the butt of her pencil. The way she leaned forward slightly to do so had Natalie's cock brushing against her stomach, and it jumped in response at the contact. Vanetta eyed it, then eyed her, as if it was her fault.

"You're impossible." A few moments passed, her pencil scribbling against the notebook, before she said quietly, "Fine. Maybe I trust some people more than others. But you have some misconceptions about me, if you think I trust you implicitly after a single day of knowing you. Just because I'm … more comfortable … around you doesn't mean I trust you."
"That's—fair. I already knew that." And she did; but it was blunt for Vanetta to say outright. "I just don't like being grouped in with Elida."
Vanetta smirked. "That's also fair."
"But, really. She's still your teammate."
"It's a temporary affair."
"It is?"
Vanetta pursed her lips. "Well—maybe not. I joined thinking so. But Elida is stronger than I expected. Perhaps it'll be less temporary, in light of that."
"Oh?" She'd have expected the time spent on Elida's team would discourage Vanetta from staying with her. She was disgruntled the opposite had happened.
"I care about efficiency, Natalie," Vanetta said, reading the look on her face. "About teammates who can clear the dungeon quickly, cleanly, and with minimal risk. Their personalities mean less than nothing. I'd rather we weren't friends." She hesitated, then added, "It's why I wouldn't entertain an offer from you, for example. Not that I was expecting any such thing," she clarified. "But I already dislike how—the ease with which we—our current behavior toward each other," she finished clumsily.
That announcement, too, Natalie was taken aback by. For a few reasons, but she focused on: "You wouldn't want to be on my team?"
"No. Not just because this City of Eros is something I'm quite fine with being a once-in-a-lifetime event. I don't want another floor like this; the dungeon should be the dungeon. I liked it as it was. But also because, yes, I mean it: teammates shouldn't be friends." The scribbling continued for a moment as Vanetta organized her thoughts. "It's why I went solo for the first while. To avoid complications. That, and because I didn't think anyone could keep up with me. I'm realizing now that was arrogant. Tenet has a number of first-years that aren't … completely useless, to my surprise."
"Not completely useless," Natalie quoted. "Put that on my gravestone."
"Shush."
"I'm surprised you thought Tenet wouldn't have someone who could keep up with you. We're the best Academy in the world." She paused. "Debatably—top three for sure."
Vanetta's cheeks colored. "As I said, I realize that was arrogant, now. But, I thought—" She shrugged and didn't offer more.
Natalie didn't pull on that thread; Vanetta seemed uncomfortable, and Natalie was no Elida, to dig into someone's past against their wishes.
"Finishing up now," Vanetta murmured after a minute had passed. "I seriously can't believe you made me do this. Forcing a girl into drawing herself having sex." She shook her head. "You seriously have no shame."
"Had no shame," Natalie laughed. "Put that on my gravestone, too."

It might have been efficient, but it wasn't 'necessary'. What did Elida gain from the encounter? Equipment that was of minimal value (remember, was only AFTER the fight that Nat's team started getting the lewd-but-powerful items), and maybe a bit of experience for her team. Conversely, she risked members of her team being injured or killed (perhaps a smaller risk given the overall power disparity at the time, but not negligible), which would've slowed their overall progress in the Dungeon. Even if not from the fight itself, then from later fights that day (which I think her group did do, but I could be mistaken on that part). So, from a pure efficiency standpoint, there was little if any reason for Elida to not simply pass them by entirely. But we know why she picked that fight. The main purpose was to slow down and humiliate Elizabeth, because Elida has a personal grudge against her. And that's where I think an eventual sticking point is going to be between Elida and Vanetta. Elida isn't driven by pure efficiency, she's driven by her own personal desires. I'd even bet that that part of her personality is how she was able to get a Patron Class. So perhaps Vanetta needs to (and probably eventually will) ask is, if efficiency and personal goals come into conflict, which will Elida prioritize? As an audience, I think we probably know the answer to that.

I wouldn't call that reckless, at the time Natalie's team was very outmatched and Elida clearly knew it, in that instance robbing Nat's team was indeed efficient

Calling elida an efficient teammate is a bit of a double edged sword, yes she likely is capable of being efficient in the dungeon, but she also lead her team to attack and rob Nat's team. That shows how reckless she can be.
