Western kids would find it pretty tough, Ken. Long school days, homework during the holidays (and school activities) and cleaning the school themselves....

You nailed it, Brian. It is pretty rediculous. But adults here still use brooms with really short handles.. so logic rarely wins out.

I often see videos with young adults still doing this, their school days clearly having instilled certain habits within them. So, as a test of my understanding of Japanese culture, I will hazard to assume that firstly, this is a technique that goes back centuries, presumably well before the invention of the Swiffer. And secondly, the answer to the question "why still?" wouId probably be something like "because that's the way it's always been done." Is that close?
