Nigel is absolutely right about social anxiety. I used to think I was destined to be weird around people but I forced myself into situations that weren't comfy for me. I started officiating sports, coaching, leading groups, etc. Now people tell me all the time how natural I am with people. There are still times that I feel awkward or weird with people but I know what I need to do because of repetition. The best thing I tell myself is, "Nobody will care if I say or do something silly." It's part of the "act like you belong" mentality. It's a skill set that needs work. It's a muscle. It can atrophy as well so it needs regular maintenance. There is a way around it is, unfortunately, alcohol. A lot of people convince themselves that they're more social when they drink and it leads some folks down a bad path.
