Also the way a child is able to function well in society is based partially in how parents fulfill those needs, so a lot of people (neet comes in mind) didn't get their needs met appropriately and end up having it tougher.

Ok so kids: how does it work? There are vastly different laws around the world on your rights and responsibilities to kids as parents, but they usually obey a few basic rules: they are your dependent, which means they cannot survive without a gardian. Therefore, you have to meet different needs, like nourishment, hygiene, shelter, safety, education, psychological and social needs. They have to be fulfilled enough, and each laws will have minimums of what is considered satisfactory basic human needs. Those vary wildly! You also cannot do certain things, like killing them, haing sex with them, hurt them beyond a set amount of harm, etc.Where I live in Canada, corporal punishment is illegal, which means you cannot hurt them physically as a way to make them obey you. You can, however, restraint them to a certain degree without hurting them. The nuances of the laws get very specific based on where you live, again. To punis a child, you can take away non-basic stuff like computers, games, etc. you cannot, however, sequester them in a way that impedes their other basic needs. For work, it varies wildly again but it is often a specific amount of pay for a limited amount of work that does not impede on other needs. Finally, these laws are used when their is noticable impairment of the child's development, so if the child is properly developing, many children experience lacks in their needs without consequences for the parents. Hopefully this was helpful! I'm a social worker in Canada by the way so please do your research by looking up stuff like basic legal children needs in California or something like it, and getting it through gov websites :P (Sorry if that was an early shot, I'm currently at 16:00 and don't know what comes next)
