Well, I'm not entirely sure if the sniffing 'test' is based on reality, but I can imagine it being plausible. Perhaps they were hoping the girl smelled like flowers and not fish! lol

Is there a real-life basis for the sniffing "test"? That is, did people of that era really believe that virgins had a unique odor? It is one of those details that seems too odd to not be real.
