We have many different sales (consumption) taxes depending on the state and city where you live. I have never seen the tax added to the price before you check out or even indicated in any way. It's a common complaint I have heard from tourists visiting the USA.

There is nothing draconian about recognizing and supporting a viable society at the most basic economic level and Japan's system is rigorously monitored and adjusted according to the needs and benefits of the country as a whole.
