I appreciate and understand that Japan just takes longer than nearly every other country to approve new drugs and medical devices for use. It's my area of expertise and that's just how their approval process works. However, now that they have approved the vaccine for use, this is quite frustrating. Early in the pandemic, a Japanese friend of mine wanted to come back to the United States to deal with some visa issues. I advised him against it, or at least against flying into and staying in the most major metropolitan areas. At that time, things were pretty calm in Japan. Now the situation is completely reversed. I want to advise him to come here with his whole family and get vaccinated!

Apparently, they have the stock but are too slow to get it out. Too much talk and not enough action.

So, any idea why Japan is that far behind? Was there an announcement of a Japanese vaccine that eventually failed to materialise? Is Japan buying vaccines from another country, e.g. the US?
