I've always thought the 1313 movies are extremely funny. The unbelievably repetitive plots and visuals are like peak high camp anti-humour to me. If you've only watched Frankenqueen, I would recommend the Cougar Cult one. That's by far the funniest one, and the only one I'd recommend to someone who wasn't a total glutton for bad gay movie punishment as I am

Gabriel Meil

I was so shocked that none of the movie are explicitly gay, from the way you'd been talking about them and even just the clips you've shown I thought they were basically softcore gay porn! And I guess they are just in a weirder and more exploitative way

I mean I don't think there's any big secret lore, I think despite the nature of his more auteurish films (like 1313) he has always done some work within the studio system, however minor. Like getting his start with Roger Corman and then making stuff for Charles Band, Full Moon Features, etc. probably gave him enough cred to be a hire-able low budget director. He made Grizzly Rage for SyFy in 2007, so he also had some legitimate TV films on his resume before getting involved with the Wrong. I wish I knew more about how Lifetime recruits creatives (because I want them to hire me 😢) but I'd guess they either have a pool of reliable "talent" including DeCoteau, or maybe someone like him would've reached out to them directly and asked for a job, but yeah despite the weird stuff in his filmography, by 2016 he probably had plenty of Wrong-level movies to show Lifetime what he could do.

Is there DeCoteau lore about how he got the Lifetime gig? I can't imagine the Lifetime execs looking at his filmography and thinking that he would be the perfect fit for their suburban mom audience. Like I'm pretty sure Lifetime wasn't having gay main characters at all in 2016 and their style of movie is decidedly not erotic.

I've heard at least one person say it's supposedly HIS own mansion?? but I don't have a solid source, idk if it's actually true

Lindsay W

My favorite thing to look for/point out in DeCoteau's movies is the same ugly mansion with the spiral staircase and weird car seat couch he likes to film in

Jane Mulcahy

no worries glad we figured it out!

Isabella

Oops sorry I missed that in the description! Thanks!

The video got age-restricted by YouTube so you have to be signed in to YouTube to watch it! And I also just tried to watch it in the Patreon app and like you said instead of redirecting to YouTube it just buffers forever. That's annoying!! Here's the direct link: https://youtu.be/HC1ShcCGg1s Hopefully that solves the problem but let me know if you have any other issues!

Isabella

Is anyone else having problems watching? I click the play button and the wheel just spins. Patreon app is updated so I’m not sure what the problem is

Queen (2014) is a pretty acclaimed movie! Good music. Not quite the same premise as RCB due to the lack of Christmas, and it's a bit more of a travel movie, and I think there are fewer gay guys. But worth a watch nevertheless

Air Stratus

I’m so glad to have shared the simple joy of a bride scream-singing in her car, and am excited that even foreknowledge could not diminish the reaction of “oh yeah there’s his gay guys”. A puzzle piece clicking into place. Frog on a lilypad. I absolutely need to watch the Bollywood film you mentioned and see what happens when competent filmmakers are given the same premise.

Definitely, I feel like Teen Wolf never really embraced the 'supernatural romance' or 'aimed at girls' labels, even though it 100% was, so they'd do all the sappiness and objectification but dress it up in this action movie style like they were too cool for school. It would've been cooler if the show was just comfortable with what it was!

Jane Mulcahy

ugh that somehow gives me even worse second hand embarrassment

Finn

I feel your frustration with DeCoteau's coyness re: the objectification of his male actors, because it was this aspect that began to make me sour on Teen Wolf, especially watching as an asexual teenager. I haven't bought into the recent puri-teen trend; eye-candy has its place, but you can't thirst-trap your way out of bad cinematography and writing.

Steven Clark

My favorite detail from Charles Band's autobiography is the revelation that DeCoteau calls the guys-in-underwear movies his "Tighty Whitey Frighties."

Jane Mulcahy

I KNOW why is it a book light 😭

andie bansil

i cannot get over that book light as the body scanner 😭 just low effort, no desire to even paint it. very symbolic of his current era* work.

Jane Mulcahy

I've thought about making a Patreon video about it! Maybe once I'm done with my next main channel video?

James Perez

Listen I know you probably get a lot of requests but I'd eat up a Dante's cove video
