To Bar or Not to Bar

I look at these setups and I just can't get my head around them. Now, for aesthetics, they look great. Getting that little bit of extra real estate makes a ton of sense, but functionally, I can't wrap my head around it.
The other day I set up bswpm from scratch, and as it doesn't come with a bar, I spent a half hour or so without a bar while I played with lemonbar. It drove me batty.
How do you know where you are in terms of workspaces? It makes it so much harder to navigate. I was constantly switching to the wrong workspace.
The question is, do the people who tout being anti-bar know something I don't? My guess is that they actually do have a bar and have it bound to a key press to hide/unhide. That is something I'd like to try.

I just don't think I have the mental ability to keep track of where I am. I guess if I only ever used one or two workspaces, I'd be okay, but I regularly use all 18 on dwm. On the one monitor it might not be a problem because all the apps there are always the same. But on my main screen, it changes all the time. It also might not be a big deal on qtile since there are only 9 groups, and they are shared between both screens. The way they move around monitors, though, would either make it easier or harder, I'm not sure.

I've noticed bars aren't for me, they definitely have a purpose, but I've come to be efficient without one. As for workspaces, it's really just a management issue. I think it depends solely on the work you need to do, and how you go about it.
