The Tangiwai Bridge Disaster
🕑 Added 2021-12-07 11:16:00 +0000 UTCThanks to Archives New Zealand, I was able to source several crystal clear, detailed images to put into this video. The clarity and sharpness of the pictures sometimes made it hard to appreciate that this disaster took place more than 50 years ago.
One source I quoted which drove this home for me was the announcement made by New Zealand Prime Minister Sidney Holland on Christmas Day. You can listen to the whole thing right here.
The quality of the recording (and Prime Minister Holland's sometimes awkward manner) makes it clear just how technologically difficult it was to make a broadcast like this, and perhaps how unused to giving speeches on the radio the Prime Minister then was!

Sounds oddly (and sadly) familiar... even here in the UK.
If the govt of the day (National or Conservatives as you'd call them) could avoid compensation for a problem they could avoid by fixing infrastructure then yes.
