Wearing his older brother’s clothes and speaking with a deeper voice definitely helped… but even so, soldiers had to undergo a medical exam before they were allowed to sign up.
This was a problem. Calvin was confronted by a dentist, who could easily tell that he wasn't even into his teens from just a quick look at his teeth. But, keen to serve, Calvin refused to be turned away. He argued that the dentist had let through the boys in front of him (who were also underage) so why couldn’t he serve as well? Eventually, unwilling to argue, the dentist let him sign up… and the rest is history.

Agreed. I'm glad they were eventually re-instated, although a shame that it was only after he died.
I can't believe they took his medals away! He didn't steal them, he earned them!

It's a really common theme. Often it takes decades to set things right... sometimes even centuries!
Both make interesting stories. It seems wrongs are frequently righted posthumously. Sad in Calvin's case.
