I had a co-worker who Woke Dad reminds me of a bit, if only in the very basic sense that he had a lot of tales about how he'd been a positive influence on people's lives and was the hero of every story. He didn't have Dan's faux-humble act either, just a lot of stories about how he'd been a total hero and protector, physically. Thanks to a wise old family friend who taught him the martial arts, knife-throwing, etc. he'd been whipped into being a lean mean fighting machine in his teens and twenties, and he ran around with a couple of friends who also been taken under the old man's wing, and they would patrol their neighborhood, squaring off against troublemakers, and the locals called these bold young fellows "The Badass Boys".
