Something I was thinking about today when re-reading this chapter, is that objectively this is a very scary trio if they just spend some time studying the science behind their type specialties. With time, and a little bit of luck/hard work, I really could easily see all three ascend to the Elite Four, if not one of them becoming the Champion themselves. Ran studying how various poisons, venoms, and gases work and figuring out how to have his pokemon use different ones would be terrifying. Using the mastery of poisons to have a Toxic Spikes field actually put opponents to sleep because it's an anesthetic toxin would be very off putting and more than a little maddening. Jodie deciding that manipulating heat and other fire adjacent things (lava, molten glass) would be scary, because fighting someone who turns Sunny Day into a heatstroke engine while throwing lava at you is not a fun thought. And then the new guy, Grady. The electric typing is so terrifying on a psychological level to me. Most of them are super fast, they can paralyze you, and there isn't a lot of things more painful than having a live current going through your body. A little effort into learning about amperage and joules, and a small dabbling into magnetism would make anyone who doubted Grady in his youth shut all the way up.

Nice. Chinchou is also rather a bit tankier than people realize, with Lanturn being a substantial wall physically speaking. Josie just had a serious wakeup call. I will give her props for not welching on the bet. Looking forward to seeing Ran get to strut his stuff.

The Dave

Josie at the moment only has a single approach to battling which is: "Just power through." It is not effective and she keeps sticking to it because it used to work by virtue of her pokémon just being stronger than those of the other beginners she was used to battling. Now that the chaff is getting thinned out, she'll have to start realizing that straight firepower (heh) isn't always the answer.

DiscoT

She kind of sucks atm, just charging straight on with no variance to it at all. Seems strange or does flame charge need to be in a straight line?

The Dave

Bit of a swerve ain't it? Please keep in mind, Josie is a teenager who has been fed one point of view throughout her entire life. She does to a degree believe what she's selling, but she also doesn't realize just how sensitive this issue is in Johto, compared to Kanto.
