Bryce Rei Forbes

His current end team is Arbok, Ariados, Crobat, Drapion. Of those, the lessons learned from training a Fighter apply offensively to all of them, but to Drapion most of all. Defensively it's less important, but I could see Arbok picking some useful stuff up, along with Drapion. If he gets this mon, and one of his other two ideal choices Nidoking would benefit more. Venusaur has less to gain from footwork and anatomy

I personally really like Toxicroak, so I'm leaning in that direction myself. In addition I think that training a Fighting type in particular could be really good for Ran. Not in the matter of discipline, he's pretty good at that side of things, but in the matter of anatomy and using it to maximize one's abilities.

While I feel like other commenters have raised solid point against Ran training the Croagunk, I'm actually kind of excited by the idea. Even as an unsponsored rookie, getting 2 exotic pokemon from 2 different Gym Leaders can only make him stand out for a potential future sponsor. Heck, even as a extremely long shot, him doing well with both foreign pokemon and documenting their training/care might even get Elm or Oak interested in him, potentially securing that future Bulbasaur. Both Aria and Golbat can learn Giga Drain, which lets them counter ground types, and I would still push for the Nido and it learning Ice Beam also counter ground types pretty well. Providing we can't convince Ran to swap from a Nido to a Gengar, of course. Him filling his 6th slot with a Gengar would make his team very scary looking from the outside looking in. Potentially a team of Arbok, Ariados, Crobat, Drapion, Toxicroak, and Gengar is pretty stacked, especially considering that Gengar can learn a few grass and ice moves while maybe levitating above ground attacks, and it can learn Focus Blast, making his team good at countering Ground, Steel, and Psychic types.

The Dave

Bulbasaur remains a longshot that'd almost definitely involve trading/purchasing of course. Other than that, valid points.

Robert

Here's hoping he loses and sticks to getting a Nidoran and Bulbasaur. Getting semi gifted another Pokemon seems weird especially for an unsponsored training. Not to mention he hasn't personally caught his own Pokemon since Azalea.

The Dave

Pokémon abilities are a case by case basis. For Levitate specifically however, I'm honestly inclined to say that that's an automatic ability for all the pokémon that naturally get access to it, with some potentially getting a second. It hasn't come up yet so I'm not making a hard ruling just yet, but *not* giving Levitate to all pokémon of some species would just be nonsensical.

MaliMi

Nidoran seems a better fit for Ran's team right now. For the last spot, Gengar with Levitate would be the best. It would be a good match against both Ground and Psychic. Btw, how does Levitate work in your story? Do all Gengars have it or?

Fuyge

I’d love ghastly and some cool ghost action but it doesn’t really fit rn. I am also for Nidoran and Bulbasaur.

The Dave

Yeah adding another foreign mon he didn't capture himself is a valid concern, but there is an underlying reason for the offer. The reasons for Ran's interest of course speak for themselves. As for the 'bitter' supplements, that part of the lore has been tinkered with, I can say that much at least.

Heraclitus

My poor boy gastly gets no love.

MrMarauder

Agreed 👍. Would like him to stick to Bulbasaur and Nidoran

Heraclitus

The part of me that played gold/silver as a kid shudders at Ran buying so many 'herbal supplements' from the pharmacy at Cianwood. Don't you know you're lowering your pokemon's happiness Ran! They're bitter Ran! Lol. And odd as it sounds, I do kind of want Ran to lose here. While Croagunk is a cool pokemon and would definitely help out against Spencer and Jasmine, it admittedly feels a bit awkward to get yet another foreign pokemon from a gym leader. I mean, Ran hasn't actually caught a pokemon since Azalea Town. That's like, half the journey right there. Thanks for the chapter.
