Recovering From a Decade of Venom | Exclusive Patreon Podcast
🕑 Added 2024-07-08 21:11:50 +0000 UTCToday is a seminal episode of the Patreon Podcast where I talk about leaving my full time job of six years (and 10 in the office world) and how hollow and empty that experience has been and how much repressed venom I have running through my system after feeling locked up in an office all that time and being underestimated by my bosses and coworkers. I don't expect my experience to totally translate to what everyone's corporate life experience has been, but for me taking this step towards being a full time youtuber / independent artist has been the most genuine and healthy experience in my life for a long time. I have a lot of bitter feelings towards my desk job, but I do my best to keep the episode light and fun and in the end I think getting bullied by boomers has ultimately made me stronger (Zenkai Boost Bitch) and prepared for dealing with the internet :-)

I’m kind of late to this, Mark. But I gotta say. I’ve worked at a number of offices of varying quality, but none were as bad as this job. Congrats on getting out!
Shazzy
Corporate podcast XD, this was a fun one to finally get round to. Man the flashbacks to my earlier jobs.
PS1APE
Best of luck in the new era, excited for what's to come o7
The Electric Underground
I feel you man. It's funny how depending on life circumstances even that office job that I look back on with negative feelings is still likely a lot more comfortable and reasonable than what other people in the world probably have to deal with. So it is important that I try to keep that in perspective as well.
The Electric Underground
Yeah it's a great turn of phrase I think ha. XD
The Electric Underground
Yeah I'm a huge fan of soul music, marvin gaye is one of my favorite muscians, so if I hear something soulful, even in a more pop style, it gets me ha.
The Electric Underground
That's awesome my dude. Yeah not to sound too Bohemian but I think the higher paying jobs can also lead to a really trapped feeling because as your income increases, your going to have different shifts in lifestyle and expenses that probably don't add to your life that much ultimately, but you feel a real tangible sense of something is wrong with you if you don't maintain or continue to increase your income. I never made that much money at my job, but at the chances I had for higher paying work I stepped away from those opportunities because once you cross that threshold it's really hard to turn back.
The Electric Underground
Thanks very much my dude! It absolutely was, it's definitely the most personal ep of the podcasts I have done, I think.
The Electric Underground
Yeah exactly ha. And I do think our generation will because we've had a very different experience than the boomers did, where millennials have been grinded down a lot more throughout our lives, generationally, so I think (hope) we will be more empathetic towards the younger generations as we age.
DancesWithIncels
would take a hardcore office job right about now
RipTheJacker
“Aggressive Pettiness” had me laughing pretty hard.
Florida sucks
lol hearing sza at the beginning made me do a double take, didn't think you'd be into music like that. another great podcast man
Sky_Katchr_Gaming
I did survival mode even made six figures in the corporate world and I was dying inside. Left and changed careers several times. Still trying to figure it out but much happier doing a job I actually enjoy.
Kuma_Wamu
Well done on leaving your job. This podcast must be very cathartic.
The Electric Underground
Lol that s great! Even alexa cannot comprehend the niche that is shmups ha
Danny Abbasi
Just want to mention when I ask Alexa to find your videos on YouTube, rather than shmups, she thinks I’m saying “shmucks” 😆 Go Mark, go! Damn the man
The Electric Underground
Yeah that place was terrible and I am very much looking forward to being my own boss moving forward, it s actually crazy how much more supportive the internet and patrons of my channel have been than my real life employers. I'm very much looking forward to this next chapter in my life, I feel like i m at a real turning point right now

Being a boomer is like playing Warcraft 2, turning on God mode, choosing to learn nothing, and then dominating everyone regardless of lack of wisdom, intelligence, or skill. I love my Mom and Dad, but god bless, I hope I have some self-awareness in comparison.
Bazzlemedazzle
You know, before I thought you were being a bit dramatic about the shackles of your office job but holy hell man that job was AWFUL. I worked in office for a few years myself and this made me grateful for what I have haha. Glad you're moving to bigger and better things!
The Electric Underground
That is wild and yes office culture gets so insolated and souless that even renting a room or venue to hold a memorial is seen as a waste of money. Insane
The Electric Underground
Thanks so much for the extra support Riff!!! ❤ yeah they are structured to stamp out as much creativity and individual identity as possible, so creatives like ourselves just have a hell of a time, that s for sure. I m gonna do a full time 48 hour donation stream at the end of August that i m really excited about
The Electric Underground
Been there myself so many times! Yes a huge part of my motivation with my content is to help give my fellow working men some mental relief during the work day, I ve been there myself for a very long time after all
The Electric Underground
Thanks so much my dude!! Yes in this heat I ve been resting and excercising like I m training for a boxing match ha.
The Electric Underground
Yeah I felt like I expressed the feeling well there because if everyone in the office just accepted what we were up to was just mostly surface level than at least they d be some sort of healthy skepticism, but the whole place was full of people who refused to see the larger picture and it made me feel insane ha
The Electric Underground
Thanks very much my dude! Yeah I ve been doing a lot of resting and exercising and i'm starting to feel rejuvinated. Also yes in this heat right now it s crazy to try to record during the day
The Electric Underground
Thank you very much my dude!! I'm really happg about this new chapter of my life moving forward. It feels very freeing
Erik Houdini
Glad to see you being able to do this full time. Love to see another creative make money moves like this. Super relatable pod.
Arcade Hell
Hey Mark, can I ask what Rode mic you use?
NeonDaggerGames
Really enjoyed these past episodes on this prolonged jailbreak. Honestly I know how bad it can be but hearing the details, it’s fucking harrowing haha. Smart to not just plow through this transition period and instead taking the time to recenter everything. It’s obvious you need to give yourself a bit of a break. You’ll have much more energy to go full steam once weather changes and the creative months arrive. Job #1 is to go to bed, son!

"I can grapple with existential meaninglessness, what I can't grapple with is people thinking the most mundane pointless shit is actually super important" - hardest hitting line of the podcast. Too real...
CookSomeSoup
im happy to hear you leaving that hell. get some rest!
Martin Wöhrle
Great episode, especially listening to it sitting at my corporate desk churning out some Powerpoint slides! 🙂 All the best to your new phase in life, I hope it works out great for you!!
RiffMason
"Two little mice fell into a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned, but the second mouse, he struggled so hard that he eventually churned that cream into butter..." Massive congrats on breaking out of the corporate hell hole, and big respect on the herculean effort you've put in to build what you've built with the channel on top of supporting your family too. Just upped my tier back up to shmup illuminati, hey don't be afraid to drop a paypal link somewhere for donations so the patrons or people from your youtube can see it, I know the content you make is worth more to me than what I pay on the patreon for sure. White collar jobs are the biggest con going and they sound ever worse in the US, I worked in corporate immigration for 5 years and it was the biggest load of bullshit ever.

Damn. :(

U.S. work culture is pretty damn hellish, from everything I've heard. Especially when it comes to taking holidays or being on standby during your free time. I had enough of working for a boss 10 or more years ago, so I went independent/freelance, but in (Western) Europe we're much better protected against that sort of thing. For starters, we have 20-30 holidays a year apart from public holidays and no boss is allowed to stop you from taking those holidays. The company that pays your salary shouldn't own your mind, soul and body, so to speak. I can only imagine the venom. I had some pretty interesting recent experiences with meeting some real deal long lost bohemian relatives as well, by the way. People that live in an artist colony, completely outside the rat race. It opened my eyes in an unexpected way.
Poor Little Pigeon
Incredibly relatable. Hard to find the words because it all rings so true. My last office job had a funeral for an employee in the lunch room.
The Electric Underground
Thank you so much my dude! Yes i m really happy with how this ep turned out since I felt it is documenting a key moment in my life :-) Yeah i feel like my YouTube channel was my underground passage out of my office jail (fun way to contextualize the channel name ha)
zeal
Strong episode! Feels like a turning point in the Electric Underground, I could've listened to you talk about work-hell for hours. You've dug deep enough and found your power line, excited to see the channel move farther forward.
The Electric Underground
Oh yeah I use a little compression in audacity to balance the audio levels but that's about it ha. I can see the shure mics being extremely good in a studio setting, but I m very fond of the more punchy sound of the Rhodes I use, but I can imagine the sensativity of the shure mic has a lot of strengths too. Also thank you for the support about not burning myself out. Yes I m gonna treat this like a marathon rather than a sprint ha
tatsudon
I use THE Shure MV7 and I quite like it. But I have to pass it through layers of filters. It sounds like you don't use much post-processing, correct me if I'm wrong, so that may be where to look for punchiness and cleanliness. Also, please take care of yourself. Your release schedule is packed as it is, considering the quality. You don't have to turn editing or recording into your new hellish job, your strength is in the insight.
