I think the one thing that bothers me about the cart narc approach is that they stay completely calm and collected except for insisting on calling the people theyre dealing with 'lazy bones'. like theres one woman who was so triggered by that as well as him doubting her disability who could have avoided all that by validating those things lol

However in the rare instance where I might have not, and I was righteously confronted with a Cart Narc, I can imagine the conversation going more or less like this: CN: “You didn’t return your cart.” Me: Correct. I’m a sociopath and have zero interest in the social contract or doing the right thing. Have a nice day. 😂

I do think certain jabs at people were a bit unwarranted (the body comment for the last woman) but all in all, the Cart Narcs seem to be doing a public service!

Brilliant! You made me laugh so hard at parts of the video. But the cart narc's tactics are still fairly harmless compared to Russia's StopHam who put stickers on people's windshields. The kind of stickers that are really hard to get off.

Yeah he should have stayed on topic. The disability could be totally legit and it doesn't change that she could operate the cart to begin with and then put it back. What a plot twist if the disability was real and this person is just so heinous and self-entitled by default that no one in her life believes her, lol. I almost felt bad for her standing there with the paper in her hand when he told her it was fake.

That was fascinating!!! Raised in the 70s and 80s, we were taught that shame is bad… but then I raised children. I discovered that kids are for the most part, born shameless. They need to learn a healthy sense of shame. Shame about doing something that not only hurts another, but creates more work for someone else. Healthy shame, even about little things, counts in aggregate… Kant said something about it 😉. Twice in the last year, I have been angrily approached by people for not cleaning up after my dog. In both cases, the people confronting me were mistaken… I knew the dog hadn’t done his business, but they didn’t. One man angrily yelled at me - “don’t you clean up after your dog??” He came out onto his lawn to confront me. I said he didn’t go… he was just sniffing. The man eyed his lawn, found some dog crap and yelled at me for lying. I sighed… walked over to the pile, and picked it up - stone cold and a few days old. I turned and showed him the petrified turd… he paused. It was obviously not my dog’s recent business. The I told him I fully and whole heartedly agree with every bit of his anger. People let their dogs go on my lawn too. And worse, any parent whose raised a toddler knows that kids don’t watch where they walk. So, thanks to careless people, many a pleasurable walk with a little one turns into a giant mess for you to clean up. I validated his position completely. He calmed down and apologized. I said, not at all - you didn’t know, and you are fully right to be irritated by these careless, selfish people leaving feces on your lawn, or any where else. Now he says hi every time I see him. Another lady came up angrily when my dog squatted, and she saw me walk away. I walked over to the site and said I’m sorry, but I checked… no business. Then I explained that my dog is elderly and can’t always get the job done. She was elderly and immediately understood. It’s hard getting old. Then, again, I told her how fully I endorse her position… and that confronting people is actually the right thing to do. Occasionally I see her on her walks and we’ve had some amazing chats. I made two friends in my neighborhood just based on these kinds of confrontations. I truly hope that had I not picked up after my dog, and been caught doing it, I would respond appropriately. I’ve been on dog walks where I’ve run out of bags because it took my poor old fellow two or three goes to get finished. This is a nightmare… I build a speech in my head in preparation … I ran out of bags, I would explain if confronted, and I will come back and clean up. Basically, I get ready to apologize and correct. And that’s the other thing I had to teach my kids. Sometimes, when you get called out, you need to own up, be honest, and apologize. Then you give that person the gift of contrition, and the chance to forgive. I told the boys - most of us actually want to forgive, because it physically and psychologically feels good. Anger, for most of us, feels bad. But we can’t forgive without contrition… we can’t forgive when someone fails and betrays us, then doubles down and lies overtop. I tried to teach them: Get good at forgiving yourself for not being perfect, admitting it to yourself and others, correcting your behaviour, and asking for forgiveness, and life will be much, much better. I hope my sons listened… they are both adults now, loose in the world, imperfectly navigating, like all of us. My fear upon watching this video is that it is more common now, as disconnected from each as we increasingly are, to feel as though our families friends and neighbours have no right to hold us accountable and expect that we will at least try to see the larger impact of our carelessness. I’m just a person… sometimes, I’m actually careless and selfish. Sometimes, I put my self before others. Have I ever left a cart where it shouldn’t be? I know I have. Have I ever used a phone while driving? Yes, I have. I’m horrified by this… but do I watch my behaviour every second of every day? No. I am full of excuses… there’s always some rationale. Videos like this, show the extreme version of my own flaws as a person. Hopefully, videos like this serve also as parables, and I be a little better, at least for a while, having watched.

The bravery of Cart Narc officers and the sociology of Lazy Bones encounters have captivated me for some time, I was so giddy when I realized this was the topic you were covering! Laughing the whole time, totally like a lighthearted vigilante story compared to The Predators. Although I can't say I condone ALL the actions of Agent Sebastian, it's undeniable that his is honest work!

I was thinking the same thing Matt about this being like one of your previous episodes called “The Predators”. Sebastian is reminiscent of Ramy in ways especially with that comment about being in that woman’s body going too far before she busted out the pepper spray. It’s a double edged sword ⚔️ I can understand what they’re doing has the greatest intent but putting someone on camera and saying derogatory stuff like that is always going to bring the demon out of someone and a part of me thinks that they like it especially for YouTube revenue. Instead of that car magnet 🧲 what Sebastian could do is have a brochure instead that gives all of the facts about shopping cart injuries and deaths that you Matt just shared with us in this video that I didn’t know about prior to watching it even though I already put my carts back. He could also have a better attitude to go with that brochure because I’d fear that someone will eventually retaliate with something he can’t run away from. It’s just like how Ramy could call the police and actually help make a conviction, but he doesn’t. Another thing is that it takes a certain person to do something like this or the predator poaching. With Chris Hansen, Ramy and others already being exposed for various things it kinda makes me curious as to what this Sebastian’s background looks like. In conclusion it was a great video Matt Orchard. Oh! By the way, have you ever thought about covering Rodney Reed, Julius Jones, Richard Glossip (the latter two from Oklahoma) and their over promoted so-called innocence vs. the suppressed potential real innocence of Daniel Holtzclaw which you’ve covered and was one of the very first criminology videos I’ve ever seen. You’ve got big balls Matt, to cover something that controversial takes a lot of risk and since watching the video I’ve signed his petition, written letters and donated. I appreciate you sharing this information as YouTube always tries to suppress it. Keep up the marvelous work 😎

Another point about the "disability" argument - many stores will have an employee help you out to your car with your purchases (and then take the cart back themselves) if it is really that much of a difficulty for you. All you have to do is ask.

Fun fact about the shopping cart. It took about two years for customers to start using it. The inventor had to pay people money at first to use the shopping cart, because until then when a customer when to the store to buy food, they bought to one or two items they needed. Also, this was back in the day where you can send for 7 year old child to the store with a dime to buy cigarettes. So it was a different time back then.

I'm disabled. I have Fibromyalgia which makes life very difficult. When I am able to go shopping and use a trolley (sorry, I'm from the UK) I make sure I take the trolley back to a safe place beyond that little strip that stops them rolling back out and hitting cars. If you can park a car, you can park a cart. No excuses.
