Chapter 201: Button Down

Michael Halpern

probably more useful for portable appliances even with the risks with the blitz cell. corded power driver? the older two handle configuration, rather than the modern pistol configuration given likely size of the motor.

Michael Halpern

no but you do need them for welding edit dont know enough about the coatings to speculate there

jonas rasmussen

you won't need inert gasses to rivet and brase? but either way it will be very useful. as will working out a suitable coating for weldingrods.

Michael Halpern

maybe a pulley system to make it easier to rack the bolt? like adding a windlass system from a crossbow to it...

Michael Halpern

I imagine getting inert gasses will be a high priority for the next year, riveted and brased pressure vessels work, after all even the 1940s era steam (mostly produced during ww2) locomotives made heavy use of rivets, but im pretty sure they make Tom less than comfortable, especially when they will have to make them to power all the machines coming out of the factory, among other things, again frost powder will make it easier, especially if they can use cold steam as a refrigerant but its still a lot of pipework and compressors that doesn't exist yet,

jonas rasmussen

very much so. and much cheaper. that blitz gel might be plentiful but it is rather expensive. not to mention dangerous. besides, plenty of other things they could do with that motor

Michael Halpern

fair enough for the maintenance hatch, at least some of the soot will drip back down to get burned away properly, still even 5 hp will probably let them run the machines at higher speeds especially compared to the maybe 1hp they got out of the hand wound motors.

Michael Halpern

yeah well it's still better to err on the side of caution here, they don't exactly have a whole lot of experience with pressure vessels nor the best tools for making pressure vessels.

jonas rasmussen

well if it's a magic alloy like Mithril it's on the table. but for an actual active enchantment it's gonna be putting one hell of a strain on the shooter

Michael Halpern

hmm didn't consider that. there just aren't a whole lot of upgrades that can be done for the M2, at least not without either better metallurgy or incorporating magic. and i don't know enough about the magic system.

jonas rasmussen

That is probably pretty close, yeah, maybe a little bit high. As for cleaning, with a proper maintenance hatch, it's not going to be that bad.

jonas rasmussen

And make it more likely for overpowered cartridges to pound the gun to pieces. and to get the rate of fire gain they would need a stiffer mainspring, and with their metallurgy that is a risk to take for sure

Michael Halpern

fusile plugs may help, with the risk of getting too high pressure, wouldn't want to be the one who has to clean those vertical fire tubes, though i suppose it's less of an issue if you don't need ladders all the time. 15hp of steam pressure, so about 6 or 7 hp engine? or is that too optimistic. still not bad for the mill and lathe, and a definite upgrade over whatever the improvised electric motors could put out, even after splitting it better both machines and a line shaft.

jonas rasmussen

only if your fireplates are not specked accordingly

Michael Halpern

making the firebox hotter increases risk

Michael Halpern

So on upgrades to Jarix's gun, did they give it a barrel booster like on the AN/M2 would both increase RoF and make it so underpowered cartridges are less likely to jam it, would make it overheat faster, but its being used as an aircraft/AA gun, short bursts are more likely

jonas rasmussen

and yeah pressurised inert gasses will be important, but is some distance away still

jonas rasmussen

oh you are talking about a forced extraction fan then? yeah that would not be very fesable at the scale they are operating. cause they could indeed not preasurise the forge. But there are many ways to make these induced draft systems. as for steam explosions, that remains a risk no mater what you do.

Michael Halpern

Well the forced draft (and water pump thinking of it) does require some engine power, to blow air into the fire box, probably overkill thinking about it due to how not sealed the forge is, usually ships would have either forced or induced draft systems to provide extra oxygen to the fireboxes. by over pressure concerns i was referring to a steam explosion. I do agree with the not getting argon for welding, while frost powder is a potential cheat code for the cryogenic steps for an air separator, they lack the rest of the infrastructure right now.

jonas rasmussen

No that would most likely be employed it. you simply route the exhaust from the engine and route it out the chimney. They would not be able to run an overpreasured room though, the keep just was never built with that in mind. It's always a balancing act on just how nerdy to get with those descriptions. I could go on for the whole chapter if I wanted. but well. That's not worth reading

Michael Halpern

any plans for a forced draft system? or are they operating too small for that to matter/ too concerned about over pressure to make the firebox hotter?
