Project sneak peek
🕑 Added 2019-07-20 11:54:02 +0000 UTCIf you've been seeing my recent tweets (@toms3dp) about topology optimization for a super simple shelf bracket, you'll know about these parts. If not, well, I've been working on figuring out Topo Optimization in Fusion360 and I'll have a video up soon soon that explains the process, pitfalls and results!
As you can see in the photo - the results are pretty nice! Just like the Printrbot Play, this bracket easily holds my entire weight, even when printed oriented in a way that layer adhesion is a critical weakspot.
Let me know what details you're interested in when it comes to the process and I'll try to answer them in the video next week!

Did you eventually write this up?

I literally just bought the lumber for my filament shelves—so almost everything is of interest. Are your shelves flat topped to accept a single horizontal board, or will you also compare the 2 rail-type shelves that Joel, Stefan & Bill did. The second was my intention, but I could be convinced to change designs.

Beautiful!

Always wanted to have a go at topo optimisation... I am really looking forward to seeing your video...

Impressive! To illustrate the initial conditions makes a difference could be to make an old style "hanging shelf" ie. rotate the shelf bracket 180 degrees, so the shelf hangs under the bracket. The resulting topology optimisation will be different ;-)

Did you pick the points, thickness, etc. for the vertical supports or does Fusion?

I never would have believed printed parts so strong assuming the part orientation used.
