🕑 Added 2025-01-29 16:41:10 +0000 UTCHey guys, Julie's just wrapping up editing our video for Friday about the medieval crossbow, well she just stumbled on this behind the scenes clip I mention in the film about the documentary I shot with Dan Snow years back at Dover Castle.
I know people go on about the skill of the longbow, but believe me the crossbow ain't easy either. It's complicated and faffy so I actually have quite a bit of respect for the crossbowmen, especially those Genoese. π

Yes, it's crazy isn't it! That video was for a TV series called Battle Castle 'Dover', I'm not sure where you'd find it nowadays, that was from 2012 I think.

Maybe a short film on the origin of those hats. Iβm mystified at the use of the front flap?? Iβve worked in Northern Saskatchewan while we were the daily winners of the Coldest Place on Earth competition. I still canβt see the use of those front flaps? I refuse to google the answers to interesting questions. π€

Would be fun to see that full video, but it seems their channel is long gone. Look at the size of that camera! Today you can get better quality from a smart phone. I guess crossbows are like any weapon, in the right hands they are very dangerous. Of course in real life you would have a helmet and mail, and a shield to get through first, and that's why you would often see guys dragging heavy shields full of crossbow bolts around. Survival was based not on the strength or sharpness of the blade, but instead the strength and steadfastness of the shield arm.
