The moonshine = blindness thing comes from SOME moonshine containing toxic amounts of methanol as opposed to just ethanol alcohol. Methanol can cause blindness; ethanol cannot. Legitimate spirit products will never contain toxic amounts of methanol, so no blindness.

One of my favourite things about this show is rewatching it and focusing on the other actors when one is delivering lines, they're constantly stifling laughs and smirking but trying to suppress it.
