Exactly my point. Chevy Chase refused to do this scene so they had to substitute in a different ending scene to take its place.

no the original scene had to do with the copy of the game abed took and was supposed to be about how abed reprogrammed it to have pierce's dad play catch with pierce. but chevy chase got mad and walked out and that was one of the last scenes they need to film.

The ending was filmed at the school because they needed something to replace the original end card since Chevy Chase refused to do the original scene.

A common hypothesis is that the animation held up completing the episode, so it aired later than desirable -- they just got it on air as soon as they could, even if it meant interrupting the end-of-season arc.
