I'll often start with singing a melody, then play it on guitar or piano. Then I'll try different chords, seeing what sounds good to me, arriving eventually at an arrangement. But it is all trial and error. Can you discuss other methods of harmonizing to a melody that may get me to something I like quicker? I understand scale intervals (1, 3, 5, b7, etc.), but melodies don't often have triads fall into my lap, and if they do, the chords aren't necessarily interesting . Looking for new approaches.
