A LESSON ON MODES

1: They are related to a major scale
or
2: They are independent scales
In this demonstration, I walk you through both perspectives to hopefully try to tie up any loose ends.
I don't suggest this as an INTRO to modes though! I consider these three videos to be a good starting point if you don't understand modes yet:

I honestly believe if you watch those videos, plus this new one I'm posting today, you should really know everything you need to know about the concept of modal harmony! The next step would be to firmly explore each mode independently and get just as comfortable with it as you are with major.

Was loud and clear up until the point where it broke down into thinking of the mode as a certain shape. I watch so many videos on this and honestly, I had approached it like this for years. A lot of other guitar teachers seem to discourage this and say "No, you'll confuse yourself, learn your major shape and then emphasize what you need off of that." It gets confusing real fast on which would be the best. I finally caught on the other day of how to play over chords and what "color" tones versus "chord" tones can mean in a scale. Was a little eye opening to say, and really helped me to understand how some melodies use notes outside of a chord being played and still sound fine. Apologies in advance, my next few QnA questions will probably be about modes and how to practically play them. This video was good, and I learn a bit more after each one, but there is some lack of "Aha!" moment that isn't hitting (Don't worry, most likely because -my- brain isn't making the connection).
Awesome and very clear. Immediately raised the question for me: what are the choices for transitioning between modes? How do you destroy the feeling of the old mode and create the center of the new one? You mentioned one-- playing the new root chord for a long time. What if you are in a hurry?
