Modal Mixture Masterclass Starts TOMORROW Night!
🕑 Added 2024-12-29 19:22:06 +0000 UTCTomorrow night at 8PM CT I'll be going live with the first week of our Modal Mixture Masterclass!
What you'll learn over the whole class:
-What modal mixture means, and how to apply it
-How to juggle all 12 notes in your compositions
-Easily match non-diatonic chords to scales that sound good
-Understand how "exotic" scales actually appear in music
-How to turn basic progressions into arranged music with melodies.
Who it's for:
-Composers who want to write beyond 4-chord loops and single keys
-Lead players who want to venture into advanced harmonic concepts
-All instrumentalists- does not focus on a specific instrument!
Pre-requisites:
You'll need to know the following concepts before week 1, otherwise you'll be a bit behind!
-The major scale / Ionian mode and its diatonic chords
-A basic grasp of what modes are
-A good understanding of how to play and arrange with basic major/minor triads
-Roman numerals
How to participate:
Join the livestream if possible and stick around to the end to ask questions after the demonstration and "lecturing" is complete. The livestreams will be viewable afterward, so a point will be made to do the hard work up front and then it'll be a bit more casual near the end.
Each week, a project will be assigned. You are encouraged to try it out yourself, then render out an mp3, wav, or midi file and upload it into Dropbox or Google drive. Then, the following day, a post will be made on Patreon where you can share your file
I will be selecting THREE random compositions each week to grade on camera unless you specify in your comment that you don't want it analyzed in front of the class 😀
I think this will be a lot of fun and really helpful for many of you! Modal Mixture is a very deep topic and I think by breaking it down into small steps like we'll be doing, we'll be able to cover a lot of territory and tie it all together into a cohesive musical system. So I hope to hear from you in the comments going forward, and if you're able to make it tomorrow night, I'll see you then! (BTW, the link to view live will post about one hour before the broadcast).

Man, this lesson was so awesome!!! I simply cannot thank you enough for opening this door for me, which has suddenly broadened my horizons so much! I watched the entire stream on YouTube for the second time today. There is just so much information in there, I can't learn and retain it all the first time. I've been making music for quite some time now, but I never really had a good grasp of modes, but your way of explaining made them understandable to me after so many tries. I'm just excited and looking forward to lesson two.

This is awesome news Jake. Like someone else mentioned, its very early for Europe viewers, so would be great to rewatch it. Hopefully we can also send in our submissions after watching the recordings?

Will the streams be able to be re-watched? I'm not complaining, but that's 2am in the UK and my compositions would be pretty dull if I stayed up 😂
