Alternate vs Economy Picking: Which is More Better? WW365
🕑 Added 2024-02-08 15:00:03 +0000 UTCHey y'all!!!
One of the questions i get asked the most often is "which picking style is best: alternate or economy"?
To help you find which one fits you best, i designed this lick, which can be played with either style, and demonstrates the strengths AND weaknesses of both! Try them out and let me know which one works best for you. This is a great test to help you determine what direction you want to pursue (or run away from)!!!
Grab ALL the goods down below, and stay tuned for a bonus lesson show how and why i choose the right picking technique for my own playing!
Thanks so much for all you do!

(PS, i get back from Shiprocked on the 11th, so i'll be answering all your messages and questions then! Thanks!)

Great teaching Ben. You really know how to break things down into bite size chunks. You demonstrate perfectly what you are teaching.

Both have their uses but if you want to learn economy picking you can probably find a ripped vhs of Michael Angelo Batio (sp?) playing his double neck guitars telling you that you’ll never be as good as he is even if I’ve never heard him in a song that was “big.”

Two things: 1) Are you good with working certain patterns of even and odd notes per string? Then economy works. If that's too constraining, then alternate. 2) How even is your sixteenth note pacing? Are you just blasting them out? Then economy is good. Need even pacing in strict rhythm, like for bluegrass? Alternate.
