This is amazing, and got me from like a clumsy 85 bpm to a pretty decent 135 bpm in a couple of weeks. My main problem is the finger roll. If I ignore the finger roll and only rely on trying to mute the B string like you suggest, I end up muting too much of the E as well and it just sounds muffled. I was trying to see how much of a roll you do, but in the intro, at full speed, it looks like you're not doing it at all, whereas it looks real clear at step-dad speed. I find the finger roll 10x harder than building speed, and I can't find a way to get "sufficient roll-off" without disproportionate hand pain after just a couple of minutes. I think this might be the hardest technique I've tried to learn yet. Anyone else struggling with this and found something that made it click?

This lesson intrigued me because it is one of the top tabs on Songsterr and I was messing around with the harmonics in the intro. I would have bypassed it if I heard the solo first. I can barely do the stretches on the Friedman version. But good ol Ben manages again to make the hard simple (but not really easy). If I could play like either I would just sit around in my underwear and noodle around all day. But alas, I have Ben’s stepmom to support…it’s not like SHE will get a job…

Awesome lesson - I have never even attempted any Megadeth because I felt like it was beyond me but as usual Uncle Ben makes it approachably nibble-sized and stepdad compatible. ---- Unrelated question - can any of you Uncles, Nephews and Cousins recommend me some boner poppin songs in C Tuning ( C F A# D# G C ) ? Already knew how to play it but practicing it sweeping has already made it smoother, cheers. I find the hardest bit however isn't the position shifting, but the stretching! I normally have no problem with stretchy stuff but something about it in this context of fast paced arpeggios like this makes it hard for me - dunno! Like the part alternating between 15 and 17 and 16 and 17.

Seconded! Alex is my favorite. Practice what You Preach, Return to Serenity. Souls of Black has every sort of technique in it: legato, arpeggios, blues, alternate picking, and of course, the legendary sweep +legato from hell which I will never be able to play in 1,000 years.

This is on my list of solos to learn after I get some Children of Bodom songs under my belt; the absolutely batshit sounding descending run after the arpeggios always seemed more intimidating to me

This is pretty genius Ben! I wanted to hear your opinion on another part of the solo: my theory is that on the recording Marty played the previous part (prior to these arpeggios) down on the 2-5 frets on the B,G-string-- specifically the "blues" bendy-parts again before this arpeggio hell section. I say this because of the tone of the unwound string bends down there (I am aware Marty always played this in the 7th-9th fret positions on D,G string live but I am talking about the record here). It's actually very nice to play down there if your fingers can handle it (mine often can't), and the runs line up with a slide into arpeggios hell. I know that's a lot to chew on, but I've been working on it for years quite frankly since your first tutorial which I base it on and would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers and pets to the pups!

Thanks for the lesson Uncle Ben In terms of Marty requests then Lucretia, but the run I'm struggling with at the moment is the ascending triplet run at the end of the Sad But True solo. I think I'm getting all kinds of muddled up with my pick slanting and the string changes so something that helps with that would be amazing

I hope you love that JEM as much as I do... I have a request for an etude - something rockabilly - Brian Setzer/Duane Eddy with a mix of one note lines and arpeggiated chords. I find playing some trad stuff I don't focus on much actually helps everywhere.
