This was not in the original outline for the story. But when I decided that the Shadow Man should appear, I thought to myself that there would be no way he'd simply let Scott off with just a warning, he'd do something to show his power.

I think he locked Scott into the female form as well. He was calling Scott “boy” until he snapped his finger, and before he left he called Scott “girl”.

I'd assume Shadow Man figured out something devious from his encounter with Cassie and her group - at that time he was determined to kill everyone, but now it seems that Cassie is not the only one struggling alone...
