This is pretty cool, with it being AR, the character's equipment could still look like a fancy dress or a suit of plate mail while the player is just in casual clothes

As a status symbol for the rich? In VR you are laying around all day not exercising or moving your real body. An AR game lets you exercise your body while you play, and in Hugo's case, taking the time to practice the sport of fencing gives him an edge over other players. So yeah, the poor play in VR because it doesn't cost much to generate a virtual world, while the rich play in AR because they have the money and resources to modify the real world to suit their game.

My question is, why would people use AR in-universe if the dreamband/neurolink already lets you engage in co-op LARPs with realistic graphics, physics, and full sensation, without all the cost of equipment and space?
