This is something that I’ve thought about on an almost daily basis. I do think that overall the idea of vulnerability has been romanticized. We see emotional displays in medias and around us and how it can bring other people closer together. I do think that most people desire a palatable and watered down version of vulnerability. If you reveal a flaw in yourself that is still somewhat redeemable, but slightly unpleasant, it’s a great tool for connection. But something that is truly socially unacceptable or uncomfortable wouldn’t be seen in the same light. I’m well aware that I can’t be completely honest about my feelings to spare my loved ones the pain of having to worry about me or being disturbed. I’m vulnerable in a lot of ways, but I draw boundaries on how far I allow it to go. I think for true vulnerability you have to be under the impression that the other person could relate to whatever undesirable qualities you possess. I’ve found that it’s in the worst situations that I’ve been the most authentically myself. I think we all have the tendency to falsely believe that those we are fond of would have similar flaws and mindsets to us, this causes us to believe that we would desire full vulnerability when in reality people may be dealing with things much darker and harder to deal with than we’d expect. That being said, I do still believe certain expressions of vulnerability are needed in order to maintain relationships both platonic and romantic. This is a really good post and it’s well thought out

Not exposing the third sort of vulnerability (especially to loved ones) is not merely self-preservation. It could indeed be an act of care and love. I remember a loved one of mine breaking into tears in front of me, saying: “You think whatever is wrong is my fault.” I was 14, and that whole scene is burned into my memory. I am a much wiser person today, and I see I had absolutely no fault in those fights; but still, I am filled with self-loathing whenever I recall that one scene.
