Antic Master

I do love how, at this point in the story, Bonteri clearly has weaknesses. Early in the story he’s a tactical and strategic mastermind, but now we see his flaws on full display: his inability to trust in his subordinate’s initiative, occasionally his inability to perceive his own fallibility, and of course being unable to fully comprehend the Force (more a universal weakness then character specific). But what’s great is that he isn’t pig headidly or annoyingly stubborn/arrogant about his flaws, he’s more just unconsciously unaware of them, so now he’s learning. Great stuff, can’t wait for what comes next. Are you incorporating any canon specific event elements for this story? Eg: Thrawn having teamed up with Anakin during the Clone Wars.

Will General Ambigene be able to beat the Tarkins at Eriadu?

Kriegsdude

Personally I think the thought is not a serious but like one of those occasional shower thoughts you can have but not seriously think would happen.

Velocity takes time to bleed in space. Despite turning around, they are still heading towards each other. If Rain flips and starts gaining velocity again, its even easier for Alrix can do the same. Vacuum is a two way road.

jj

what stops rain from flipping and pursuing?

Mafioball

Does Alrix have the ability like Windu, to determine the decisive place and moment of battle?

Han363

I think Alrix's plan was to run through Rain's formation at high speed and using Plo Koon's formation to minimise losses without slowing down then hit the back line, if Rain's ships were facing them when they ran through he would not be able to catch up to them once they pass him because it takes time to accelerate to match their speed, thats why Rain had to filp and burn in the other direction so they had the speed to catch up and defend the back line.

I've done those before (see Centares and Columex) but this battle, if it can be called that, was one of the simplest. It takes some reading between the lines, but essentially yeah she was actually aiming for the auxiliaries. Thing is, his auxiliaries were a good 40 million kilometres behind him, so her plan was to essentially punch through his fleet a la Plo Koon, getting as far she can before deploying all her fighters to destroy his auxs, then use her fleet to protect the starfighters by blocking Rain's forces as they turned around. It was a one way trip, as her fleet would now be stuck behind his battleline and isolated, but her instincts told her that this was the only way to deprive Rain of a victory. Ventress and Krett realised something was up, as she was coming in way too fast and that she was basically in a suicide charge (which she was). So they pulled their forces back, reducing the contact velocity as much as possible so that Alrix wouldn't have the relative momentum required to smash straight through them. Rain realised as well after he finds out Alrix's intercept target was not his fleet, but the auxs, and makes a hasty flip and burn to reduce contact velocity. Realising she now didn't have enough relative monentum to blow right past him, Alrix decides to withdraw rather than get trapped in an encirclement.

Do you know how they sometimes show a hologram of what’s happening or showing the strategy play out in visual? I was wondering if we could have a quick ms paint of some of these fights. Or just a single sentence kind of summarizing it just like the comments do? (Within the chapter) They get a bit difficult for me to visualize n understand in a single read, it’s only hours later when people discuss that I get a generalised comprehension. So she was targeting his support by going to fast to engage and Ventrrss felt this, so was moving her vultures to go to where she predicted the ships would pass? How did she know this was Bonteri? Couldn’t it have been a force seppy commander or a tactical droid with a lot of exp? Considering assaj forces powers predicted what the Jedi were doing.

Anareth

A good chapter, though I think Bonteri's internal monolog about how the militia act will lead to a bumper crop of force sensitive generals is completely incorrect. The Confederate Military lacks the institutional capacity to train force sensitive and self training doesn't allow you to match a Jedi unless you have council level talent anyway.

AdmiralPenguin2

If you want a pure visualization you can watch the final battle in Ender's Game, it's similar to what she is doing right now. Accelerating in a cone shape to essentially drive a wedge through the center-line and smash through without stopping. It essentially turned a ranged firefight into a short bar room brawl.

Biff Alexander

I agree with the sentiment, but not the reality. They were closing damn fast, but she was pot committed. Sure, Rain ordered a retreat. But as soon as she had her own ships slow- which was far from instant- he could have reengaged. Basically she was beyond the point of a clean retreat based on everything we just read. Rain could just keep flipping his ships to maintain limited contact no matter if she pressed or retreated. Sure, he needed to get his fighters back in some order, but he had choices available to him to make that happen. So what just happened was basically plot armor for Alrix. It’s a good story, and I appreciate it being shared. It’s probably hard to game out believable tactics and strategies for SW when the continuity is so borked. And using actual space combat would be nearly impossible to follow as a reader anyway, thus why we have wet navy battles and almost no concept of spatial manuvering beyond what youd see from a wet navy.

Neotzu

don't forget that bonteri's mission is to go deep behind enemy lines without support from supply ships or friendly ports to perform repairs. so it is vital that he protects his auxiliary ships because those ships will determine his ability to fight behind enemy lines. if Alrix succeeded in attacking the auxiliary ships then his mission would have failed before he could get started. Alrix could see the weakness in his mission but alrix could not see the last minute retreat bonteri performed because he is a blind spot to force user's like Alrix.

Ryan

Never before have I been this addicted to a book.

FuschiaKnight

I think the problem was that the two fleets were closing at such high velocities, that there would have barely been any time for Rain to hit Alrix's fleet before she was amongst the 28th Mobile Fleet's auxiliaries and doing way too much damage. Also, he recognized her formation from his engagement with Plo Koon at Metalorn, the rotating cone of capital ships. There, it basically allowed Plo Koon's command to punch through the fire of the "head" divisions and get into brawling distance of the "base" division more or less intact, while here it would allow Alrix to blow through Rain's fleet with minimal damage to her warships.

Nick Ramsey

I followed maybe 60% of the tactics there. :/ Would anyone be so kind as to provide a summary of what just happened? I get that Rees Alrix was targeting Rain's reserve ships (I think?) rather than his battleline, and I think she withheld her starfighters within their bays so as to expend them against Rain's reserves rather than his vultures. What I don't understand is why it would not have still behooved Rain to pound her as she went by. Is it because he needed his ships intact to protect the reserves?

DarkNebula999

I guess it tracks that a planner like Bonteri would balk at what is basically a game of chicken.

Mrsean22

That was pretty intense and a single shot wasn't even fired. This might be one of my favorite chapters so far. Rain almost made a mistake against Rees Alrix. Rain was thinking it would just be a battle but Rees Alrix had other plans that involved hurting Rains fleet long term by hitting his ship repairing abilities. But hey Rain caught it through Ventress, Krett and past experience again Plo Koon. Then it goes to Rees Alrix to see if she would make a mistake. Which she doesn't by seeing Rain withdrawing and realizing that it was Rain she was fighting. So decided to stop her attack. Rain and Rees Alrix might of just got more respect from their fleets because showed their competence and made the right decisions in the end. With again not a shot being fired. Looking forward to how this campaign goes.

Hopefully this will give Bonteri the kick needed for him to start actually talking to other people outside of giving them orders. But I have a feeling he'll need more convincing. It feels like he's still in the anger stage of acceptance.

EnderScroll

So Bonteri finally found his match.

Dineshraj Dhandapani

Holy shit that was close

I'm glad to see some character development for our MC. I really do like that he's having to learn a hard lesson. It does slightly bother me, though, the role the Force played in the proceedings.

FuschiaKnight

Also, when *Kendal Ozzel* thinks a charge is suicidal you know it’s fast and direct.

FuschiaKnight

Looks like a reality check for Bonteri, Alrix herself is a new opponent that he will need to adapt to counter as well. Similarly, Ventress proved herself cannier than Rain expected—he may need to eat some humble pie the next time they meet, seeing as she (and Krett) proved to be the ones who figured out Alrix’s gambit first, though Rain did eventually come around to trust their instincts.

Stav Tri

Ah the secret battle within the upcoming battle. For all it's worth, no one died this time around, plus our little rear admiral is learning to trust in organics, slowly but surely Edit: also also, unintentionally, bonterri is sowing some friction in resilient's crew with their new general. Will this matter? Maybe. I've heard stories about soldiers defying orders from on high because of their lack of trust towards those above them, and we've seen the same thing happen in the clone wars show against Krell, plus bridge officers are a whole nother type of blood than the grunts on the ground. So looking forward to what happens next! (^o^)/
