I think Rain forgot that the galaxy was far far away, but also a long time ago, so even if he searches earth might look quite different

You can find the old chapters on spacebattles forums

Mad Max

A retreat having achieved objectives is quite different from having fleeing for your life because you botched up up the mission. Rain's mission to the core was to rescue Ningo, and help the detecting fleet escape. Both of those were achieved, not to mention Starlance and Stormdoor.

The explosive effect of the KKV was explained in Chapter 63, where Calli attacked Commenor with a similar weapon. Essentially, when an object travels fast enough (99.999% light), its atoms will fuse with whatever it impacts in a nuclear fusion chain reaction. This is what happened when Calli's missiles hit Commenor's atmosphere, the atoms in the missiles fused with the atoms in the atmosphere, causing nuclear conflagaration. This is also what happened in Chapter 80, creating the explosion. The atoms in the tungstoid KKV were travelling so fast they immediately fused with the first atoms they impacted. As they were in space, said impact was the enemy. In this chapter, there was no fusion. This means the KKV was travelling too *slow* to create the fusion effect, but also too fast to impart kinetic energy as Gabriel mentioned. Basically, the speed of a 'normal' railgun. This is because Rain had jumped in on short notice, and did not have enough time to charge Conqueress to maximum before firing, thus Conqueress more or less acted like a conventional railgun. So, ironically, the over-penetration is because the projectile was too *slow* instead of too fast. here's a good video to watch if you want to understand the mechanics. it's short and enjoyable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EI08o-IGYk

Zielscheibe

I understand your point. But Rain said it best😉: Grievious is like a cockroach, impossible to kill and able to get through any crack.😮‍💨

KnightofTempest

If Grievous even gets close to Rain. I doubt he will. Rain's too twisty for that, just look at how he tricked Plo Koon into boarding a trap Frigate during their first battle

Zielscheibe

As long as they are not in close combat. Grevious has much more experience than Rain. But he has the better droids.

Straven

Wasn't aware the author had such a thing going, was looking for the RR set to start binge reading from the start for about the 3rd-4th time after reading this only to not find it. Sadly P one only goes to the....26th chapter I think it is, nothing lower.

Straven

Hoping she's alive. Truly one hope.

KnightofTempest

Grevious vs Rain? That'll be one hell of a fight. . .

Hawk

Hard Enough has been going on for years, but it's still on the site and Nintendo's the most litigious company out there.

Flash Red

Probably because of RR guidelines towards fanfics. Specifically RR doesn’t want to deal with the copyright infringement bs that fanfics get caught up in especially monetised fanfics like this story.

Straven

The republic is going to literally shit a brick learning he's alive!

KevKev

Luminara, you're about to witness a Call of Duty mic session; let the trash-talking begin.

JustShadow

Hello, what happend with royal road novel? I was reading it and then bam, "This fiction has been deleted"

Ника Ви

Thanks for the chapter!

nugitoBambino

they only cut off a head haha

Ewout

You are forgetting one thing: The Jedi need proof part of separarists is against dooku and is willing to help and fight for peace. The superweapon was going to be revealed eventually anyway, having it revealed saving a fleet, most likely multiple Jedi, and permanently weakening Grievous, whether he wins or not is obviously worth it. Even more so now that they know the gun can actually fail to be useful because of its sheer speed. That is incredibly valuable knowledge for Trench and Rain. Remember, those ships never had a real field test.

Marcin

Unless you get explosive decompression, this thing would be deadly... also if said rock hits the reactor and suddenly no power.

Napoleon III

But that would be such an bad “super weapon”. Let’s resume what conditions said weapon would need to destroy a fleet ; 1 : A Conviently positioned fleet. Said fleet would need to be in a single file or at least a cone for chain reaction to occur (A very common battle formation as were all aware [sarcasm]) 2 : Perfect positioning. For the ship to be either directly in front of behind said formation 3 : The GAR needs to be stupid. After the first cone or line shaped fleet is defeated, that the GAR does not immediately recognize how to almost completely render said weapon almost useless. I.e just spread out 4 : Bad enemy ship design. Ships are not all made like the Death Star or human beings. They are literally made to take hits. Meaning, redondant system everywhere for as many systems as possible. The goal of wich is precisely that a single lucky hit does not completely incapacitates said ship. There is no "central power line" in ships 5 : Let’s forget about all the previous points for a minute. Let’s say our dear super weapon need to destroy say a 8 kilometer long capital ship. According to the Aggressor schematics (from chapter 78) the bore of the gun is roughly 50 meter in diameter, imagine a hole like that in a 8 kilometer long ship, from the y or the x axis unless they hit something critical (like some kind of ion canon let’s say) the ship will barely register the hit. Again the only way a super weapon like that could destroy a ship would be from either directly front the front or the rear. If the not the ship will just Cary on or flee (exactly like in this very chapter) But all of that is moot if the author would just tell us clearly how it works. (You can do it now it you want or whenever, no pressure)

Mrsean22

Oh this is gonna be fun. Grievous won against Piell but I imagine a good amount of Grievous ships are damaged. Not to mention Rain just made Devastation big gun useless. Rain technically has six more shots from his big ship but he might want to save some for later. Luminara just learning that Rain is back with his own big ship must be very scary for her, her fleet and the Republic once she tells them. Rain vs Grievous is gonna be fun and bloody.

Peter

That last line goes so hard

Hailhound

Also, don’t discount the value of saving Luminaras task force. After the Jedi rebellion she will be an ally, and for now saving her really cements Rain’s legitimacy as a temporary ally against Cerenno. Back to Trench’s thoughts on superweapons, here he used the superweapon to do something nothing else could: hit the big gun in time to stop it from firing. And take out another superweapon, I don’t think anything but that big slug could have overloaded devastations shields before it could flee

Tsorov

Well Rain also retreated from quite a few, the last one being the one where he "lost his life". Let's hope that Calli is as much as a Cockroach as Grievous is.

Hailhound

Hitting a group of ships is very different than a single ship. The slug hits, and then blows the stuff that was in the hole it made out the back. That stuff then hits other things, which make more debris, that rip apart more ships, etc etc and spread the original slugs energy over a broader area, allowing it to destroy even an entire fleet. The first ship hit is the least damaged, as it only has a single large hole, as seen in this chapter, where there was nothing behind. Also, I think you’re discounting the damage a big hole does. A ship doesn’t need to be in chunks to be useless. Just like a body, a single hole in say the spine (or in this case central power line) and you’re paralyzed.

William M.

There's no real "shell" as we know it; the weapon fires a slug of tunqstoid with manoeuvering thrusters as a KKV. Likely because it's safer and less likely to detonate inside the cannon from the acceleration alone.

Napoleon III

Read chapter 80 again it supposedly destroyed multiple ships, impossible with the weapon you described. Beside you said it, a weapon like that would be almost useless agains more than a few tens of ships hardly a super weapon

William M.

I believe saving some part of the Republic fleet was likely at least a secondary goal of that shot. Primary goal was clearly putting a superweapon out of commission though. And Devastation is definitely out of commission. Outside of months in a dedicated shipyard, I don't think there's any way she can be put back into service as anything but a flying wall of steel.

Voligne

@Miirthfully you should rename the Garland to the Laurel so you can make a reference to the betrayal of Julius Ceasar.

Charles L

He did not do it to take out Grievous, and even if he did, it was a terrible gamble. He could not have known where Grievous was, because Grievous was last seen aboard Piell's flagship and presumed dead in the self-destruct. Rain fired at the Dreadnought which did not actually manage to destroy it while not knowing where Grievous was. The only way this decision would make sense is if he wanted to save Luminara's task force and maybe kill Grievous as a secondary objective. But if saving the Republic task force was the main goal, it is not one that is worth showing his hand for. A good way to use the superweapon is to guarantee a kill on an important target like evaporating Plo Koon's flagship to deprive the Republic of their best general, or firing straight at Dooku's palace to take him out. Here he missed Grievous, and i'd argue even if he did manage to kill Grievous it wouldn't have been worth it because Grievous staying alive would result in the Serenno Loyalists and Jedi Expeditionary Fleet to grind each other down and weaken both his enemies. It was a terrible decision to use the weapon at this point because all he got was maybe some goodwill with the Jedi at the expense of revealing his existence and the superweapon.

Chad Champion

I thought so too, but he did put out of commission Serreno' superweapon... and this is not over, i think a fight with Grievous will follow.

Voligne

Rain: I lived. Bitch.

Duke of Coffee

Disabling it makes it... easier to capture perhaps. 😜 Nevertheless armour piercing slug like that is not packing extra explosives. 😱

Gabriel Clark

It over penetrated, moving too fast for the kinetic energy to be transferred from the slug to the ship. It’s why all those “science” reports about the danger of lightspeed meteorites are bullshit, the things just rip through and nobody notices the holes before they fill back in.

D3ad0s

First, it’s Grivous. Dookus numero uno. Second he took out a dreadnaught. Third, making inroads with future allies. He made it count. https://youtu.be/ifKB4tH3wEE?si=DMWxQAOYAHsGkUn8

D3ad0s

Over penetration maybe?

Max

The point was not to save Luminara. That was at most a happy accident.

Napoleon III

Wait. Why didn’t Devastation blew up ? Did the shell malfunction ?

Marcin

He wants to put Grivous down... once hes gone Dooka will have nothing else.

Charles L

Rain showed his hand and gained practically nothing. I doubt saving Luminara is worth revealing the superweapon. It sure is refreshing for Grievous to be so competent though.

Jacob

Excellent chapter, love the brewing conflict and wonder if Rain will suggest Kenobi to kill Grievous or ask him to keep an eye on Anakin.

Duke of Coffee

Rain and Grevious meet in the epic clash of metal. Let see if Rain can kill the cyborg.

inkaral

Yes! YES! YEEEESSSS! *cackles insanely*

Husinay

And they say dead mens tell no tales ! Well the Hydra has come back from the dead, lurking in the shadows and striking with devastation. For the GAR, it is a nightmare, for a hated ghost is back.

Mad Max

We'll only one of them has actually run away from many of his battles.

Man-O'-War

Grievous at the end: Finally a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary

Teh One & TrueTabi

Raine unironically calling Grievous a cockroach.

InsertNameHere

Holy shit that was a cool chapter. Love the series, keep up the great work!

Mad Max

So commence the brick dumps.

SuperbOwl67

Oh yeah! This is the good stuff I’ve been waiting for.
