That fifth tier mage had a "shit your britches" moment. She knew that her apprentice would have sensed a tier 7 mage, and would have avoided insulting them, but she could have offended the tier 7 mage's apprentice out of hand and gotten them all killed. That's why it pays to know who you are talking to.
