Thanks for the read and the response! For all the times people say 'never meet your heroes', they couldn't have been more wrong about the times I've had the opportunity to spend some time and talk with Kieron. I think his way of thinking things through repeatedly and expressing himself is kind of ... it lends itself particularly well to fiction, because I can sort of see that (especially in his earlier days of writing) his way of plucking things apart and trying to talk about them, which is very energetic and charming in a conversation, can read as pretentious in an article. (Not so much anymore now that he's got a newsletter and an instagram, and you realize he's really just a big self-aware softie who likes music, comic, and games.) In fairness, all this comes from a place of excessive bias from me, so take with some grains of salt, but I discovered his work through Wicked + the Divine rather than his journalism, so I can only speak to my experience.

Thanks for the Kieron Gillen recommendation! I know him from his time as video games journalist and his style was always recognisable and, although he was one of the people who pioneered a kind of Gonzo games journalism (and I still read the site he co-founded, rockpapershotgun.com), I was never sure whether he was actually being "himself"/"honest" or a bit pretentious (in a somehow open, conscious way); it was probably a bit of both and also him figuring it out? I don't know, it was definitely idiosyncratic. So I was always interested in his comic/VN work he's been doing since then but never got around to actually looking at it... Maybe this is the push I need, thank you!

ABBA may not mean quite as much to me as to Sarah, but their music still has a fairly strong impact on me. I desperately want to experience Voyage at some point, but right now, just can't afford the trip. I've stumbled from stage to (well, zero-budget student) film to a more cabaret performance, back and forth from going solo to group productions and solo again. The joy of solo work is that I can direct myself and make my own choices, and be myself on stage more than I normally allow myself to be around people. I've never figured out whether that's bravery or cowardice. (Or a replacement for the therapist I can't afford, either.) I've been trying to pursue voice acting and performance capture these days, in this long-running pursuit of greater honesty (to others and myself) in performance. ABBA fans have complained about the avatars, and I understand the desire to see these people you admire up on stage. But ... I mean, you still sort of are. It is the performance they want to give, in the form of truth they want to perform it in, unfettered by expectations and other people's definition of authenticity. They are themselves, we don't get to decide what that 'self' looks like for other people. I'll wholly recommend Kieron Gillen's Phonogram and The Wicked + The Divine here, stories about honesty, performance, and the self in music (in the former, as the audience; in the latter, as the creator), To end a far-too-long comment, Night Vale, and Jeffrey, your personal work (even curated as it also is) - and your personal/curated performance/self - has been an immense inspiration to me as a creator and in how I understand myself as an artist, and continues to be. To go back to ABBA, "thank you for the music."
