We didn't see it that way when we thought of the auction idea, but you are right that it directly leaves out people who can't afford it. What we are looking for is to be able to make a Patreon's dream character come true, something that he has been looking for a long time and can't find...
The problem we saw with the raffle is that it could happen that one of you could win and tell us .... I don't know, I don't have any character in mind, do whatever you want. That's what we mainly wanted to avoid.
The idea of the auction was to celebrate the 600, we are not going to celebrate it with something that you don't like and it seems that the option that you propose the most is a raffle among the patrons.
So we are going to keep everything the same, but instead of an auction we are going to do a raffle! So you'd better think about your character in case you get it!
The final character can be added to a future patreon release or to the welcome pack so you all can print it.
We will do the raffle on Friday 29th, we will publish the name of the winner the same day!

I've almost never won anything that was luck-based, so I doubt I'd win the raffle, but I already have 2d reference art of the character I would have in mind, since I played them for a couple sessions of a campaign that didn't get far, and then I later reworked the character to be one of the protagonists for a book series I'm writing.

I really appreciate what you did here, listening to the feedback the Patrons gave and adjusting it so everyone has a fair chance. I think everyone else is happy with the results too. Not only are your models fantastic, but you respect your fans too. Congrats on the milestone and keep up the great work, we will keep supporting you!!!

Great idea - so why not get those creative juices flowing right here and right now. The way I see it if I wanted a “hero-type” that met my design specs I would go to Hero-Forge, or something similar to flesh out my ideas. But to see something a bit more fantastical that they couldn’t provide is where it’s at. Dragons? Trolls & Ogres? Demons & Gods? Think we have seen quite a few of those around. How about a Beholder - nah, Wizkids makes an awesome one of those. Hmm, I’m keeping with your NPC artisan theme I propose a monarch, throne room sort of a vibe. Wouldn’t be a single mini, so might not be staying true to the challenge - but would be in line with what you have been doing and would fit in well to your Welcome Pack. Ok - that’s my idea (and yes, I know - you can make a monarch-type on that “other site” - but not with all the props, and a chance to flesh it out furthur at 700 with a Court Jester, and 800 with children, and 900 with a feast table and grand chef, and 1000 subs with a freaking castle!!!)

Perhaps a solution in case someone is chosen who doesn’t have an idea in mind would be to create a thread (with something like a two day time limit for comments) for patrons to post what they would have suggested and let the winner pick from those? Maybe the person whose idea is chosen could then participate in the design process in place of the winner of the raffle.

in general I find this solution better than the auction. But I am as creative as a rock and don't want to be picked. with patreon it is possible to create a poll. As far as I know you can get a list of people who answered the poll and how they answered and pick one of those.
